On April 1st, 2026, the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) announced that its "Jiuzhang-4" quantum computing prototype had achieved a major breakthrough. It can solve certain mathematical problems 100 trillion times faster than the world's fastest supercomputer.
Quantum computing is a new type of computing that uses the principles of quantum mechanics. Unlike traditional computers that use bits (0s and 1s) to store and process information, quantum computers use quantum bits, or qubits. Qubits can exist in multiple states at the same time, which allows quantum computers to perform many calculations simultaneously.
The "Jiuzhang-4" is based on photonics technology. It uses 255 photons to perform calculations, which is a significant increase from the 76 photons used in the original "Jiuzhang" prototype in 2020. This increase in the number of photons has greatly improved the computing power of the system.
The breakthrough of "Jiuzhang-4" has important implications for many fields. It can be used to solve complex problems in drug discovery, materials science, weather forecasting and cryptography. For example, it can help scientists design new drugs by simulating the behavior of molecules at the quantum level, which could lead to the development of treatments for diseases that are currently incurable.
However, quantum computing is still in its early stages. There are many technical challenges that need to be overcome before quantum computers can be widely used. But the success of "Jiuzhang-4" shows that China is at the forefront of quantum computing research in the world.
19. What is the main difference between quantum computers and traditional computers?
A. Quantum computers are smaller and cheaper
B. Quantum computers use qubits instead of bits
C. Quantum computers can solve all mathematical problems
D. Quantum computers have been widely used in many fields
20. What does the word "simultaneously" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. At exactly the same time
B. One after another in order
C. In a very slow and careful way
D. With great difficulty and effort
21. Why does the writer mention drug discovery in paragraph 4?
A. To explain how quantum computing works
B. To show an application of "Jiuzhang-4"
C. To discuss the challenges of quantum computing
D. To compare quantum computers with supercomputers
22. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The History of Quantum Computing
B. The Future of Supercomputers
C. How "Jiuzhang-4" Was Developed
D.China's Quantum Computing Breakthrough

As the senior high school entrance examination approaches, many Grade 9 students are under great pressure. Li Ming, a 15-year-old student from Yancheng, was no exception. A few months ago, he was so stressed that he couldn't sleep well and often felt tired in class. His grades were dropping, and he felt hopeless.
Luckily, Li Ming's school started a mental health support program during the National Student Mental Health Education Month in May. The program included individual counseling, group therapy and stress management workshops. Li Ming decided to try it.
He first talked to the school psychologist, Ms. Wang. She listened patiently to his worries and told him that it was normal to feel stressed before exams. She taught him some relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation. She also encouraged him to talk to his parents and friends about his feelings.
In addition to counseling, Li Ming started playing basketball every afternoon after school. He found that exercise was a great way to release stress. When he was playing basketball, he could forget about his exams and focus on the game. He also made some new friends in the basketball team, who supported and encouraged him.
Slowly but surely, Li Ming's situation improved. He started sleeping better, and his grades began to rise again. Most importantly, he regained his confidence. He realized that exams were important, but they were not everything.

26. What can we learn from Li Ming's story?
A. Mental health problems are easy to solve
B. Exercise is the only way to deal with stress
C. We should ask for help when we are in trouble
D. Exams are not important for students' future

I had been on the island for about ten days now. My ship had been destroyed in a terrible storm, and I was the only survivor. I was alone, with no food, no water and no shelter. I knew that I had to do something quickly if I wanted to survive.
The first thing I needed was a place to live. I looked around the island and found a small hill with a flat top. There was a cave at the foot of the hill, which would make a good shelter. But first, I had to build a fence around it to protect myself from wild animals.
I spent the next three days cutting down trees and carrying them to the cave. It was hard work, especially since I had no proper tools. I used a piece of stone to cut the trees, and my hands were covered in blisters. But I kept going, because I knew that my life depended on it.
After I finished building the fence, I started to make my cave more comfortable. I brought in some grass to make a bed, and I used some pieces of wood to make a table and a chair. I also built a fireplace at the entrance of the cave, so that I could cook food and keep warm at night.
28.______ I was very tired, but I felt proud of what I had done. I had a safe place to live, and that was a good start. But I knew that there was still a lot of work to do. I needed to find food and water, and I had to make some tools to help me survive.

Last Sunday, I went to the Bird's Nest International Science and Art Exhibition with my parents. The exhibition, called "Possible World Archives", was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had.
The exhibition opened on April 20th and will run until June 30th. It showcases the latest developments in science and art, and explores how technology can change our future.
When we arrived, we were given a special headset. As we walked through the exhibition, the headset showed us different virtual worlds. We could see what cities might look like in 100 years, and we could even talk to virtual people.
My favorite part was the "Time Capsule" room. In this room, we could write a message to our future selves and store it in a digital time capsule. The message will be sent to us on our 30th birthday.
I also learned a lot about artificial intelligence and virtual reality. The exhibition made me realize that technology is not just about machines and computers. It is about making our lives better and creating new possibilities.

An Unforgettable Volunteer Experience
Last Saturday, I took part in a volunteer activity organized by our school. We went to the community center near our school to help the elderly learn how to use smartphones.
I helped an 80-year-old grandma learn how to make video calls. I showed her step by step, and she learned very carefully. She was very happy when she successfully talked to her grandson who lives in another city.
This activity was very meaningful. I not only helped others but also learned a lot from the elderly. I realized that we should spend more time with the elderly and care about them.
