Some schools ask their students to do volunteer work. Some students like doing volunteer work, while others don’t. So should students do volunteer work? I think they should. Here are my reasons.
Doing volunteer work can help students get into colleges. Many colleges look at the time students spend doing volunteer work. If they don’t do any volunteer work, they may not be able to get into a college.
Not all students go to college after leaving high school. If you think that those students don’t need to do volunteer work, you’re wrong. Students can get a lot of skills by doing volunteer work.
________. Everyone lives in a community. Doing volunteer work helps you know that you’re part of your community. When you know that, you’ll love your community.
Doing volunteer work can help those in need. It can improve some people’s lives. Research (研究) shows that when you assist others, you’ll be happier, too. So doing volunteer work is good not only for the receiver but also for the giver.
Now we can say that doing volunteer work is very important for students. So students should do volunteer work.
29.What can we know from Paragraph 2?
A.Many children enjoy volunteering at college.
B.Many colleges ask students to volunteer for them.

30.第四段提到:“Everyone lives in a community. Doing volunteer work helps you know that you’re part of your community. When you know that, you’ll love your community”,此段主要围绕做志愿者工作能让人融入社区展开,B选项“We cannot live by ourselves in this world”能很好地引出下文关于社区的内容。
31.第五段提到:“Doing volunteer work can help those in need. It can improve some people’s lives. Research (研究) shows that when you assist others, you’ll be happier, too”,根据前文说做志愿者工作能帮助有需要的人,可知这里“assist”意思是帮助。
C
People usually think volunteering is just for adults. It seems hard for students like us. But it is completely different in Canada. The government encourages (鼓励) people of any age to volunteer and make contributions (贡献) to the whole society. So, if students want to graduate (毕业) from high school, 30 hours of volunteering is needed. If students want to get into a good university, it helps if they contribute a lot to society. Volunteering is an important point that universities will think about.
Besides, there are volunteer chances everywhere. People can find information about how to volunteer posted in the library or on the Internet. It includes many different jobs, such as wrapping (包装) gifts in a shopping mall, taking care of small kids or cleaning up a church. Students can choose what they want to do and register online.
I got my first volunteer job at New Westminster Museum every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. My job is to check the documents (文件) on a computer and correct mistakes. The museum is about the historically important family in New Westminster. At first, I was nervous to communicate with others. But as time passed, I became more open. During the volunteering, I not only learned how to work with other volunteers but also learned a lot of history about New Westminster.
As a volunteer, I am proud of myself. I enjoy doing my job and helping others.
33.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Volunteering is only for adults.

With the Year of the Rat coming up, I remember going out for Chinese food when I was a kid in the US. In Chinese restaurants, there are always plates with pictures of the zodiac animals For most people in the US, this might be the deepest impression of Chinese culture. One time, we started to laugh after we learned that my aunt is a rat.
We laughed because in our culture, rats are animals of very low position. They eat rubbish and cary diseases, so we think they are dirty. Because rats are sneaky (鬼鬼祟祟的), we think of them as untrustworthy. Calling semeone a rat is very rude. It means we cannot trust him or her easily, or we will be cheated.
As a kid, this caused me to feel bad for people born in the Year of the Rat. I wondered whether they would be looked down upon by others. I did some research and found that although Chinese people also see rats as dirty animals, they added them to the zodiac for some reasons.
Rats are thought to be animals that can bring people wealth. They are also able to give birth to lots of babies, which makes them a symbol of good luck—traditionally, Chinese people prefer to have large families with many children. Rats are believed to have intelligence as well. It is believed that sneaky animals must be clever.
So now, I’m entering the new year with a fresh way of looking at rats. Perhaps I need to find a new understanding for other things—-animals, ideas or even people!
37.The writer gave ________ reasons to explain why Chinese people add rats to the zodiac.
A.two B.three C.four D.five

40.The writer mainly talks about ________.
A.why American people don’t like rats B.what Chinese people think of rats
C.how people see rats in different cultures D.who can find a new understanding for rats
根据“Rats are thought to be animals that can bring people wealth” “They are also able to give birth to lots of babies”及“ Rats are believed to have intelligence as well”可知,一共给出了三条理由,故选B。
根据“Because rats are sneaky”及“Rats are believed to have intelligence as well”可知,中国人认为老鼠是狡猾但聪明的动物,故选D。
根据“Calling someone a rat is very rude. It means we cannot trust him or her easily, or we will be cheated”可知,叫某人是老鼠是很不礼貌的。
British culture has changed a lot over the years. 41 Many years ago, people spent most of their free time reading books or listening to the radio at home. They had few ways to enjoy themselves and hardly ever travelled to other countries. Today, things are very different. 42 With the help of new technology, they can get information from the Internet in seconds. Young people enjoy watching short videos, listening to popular music and chatting online with friends from all over the world.
People’s eating habits have changed too. In the past, British people only ate traditional food like fish and chips, bread and sandwiches. They knew little about food from other countries. 43 You can easily find Chinese, Italian, Indian and Japanese restaurants in big British cities. More people are trying fresh and delicious food from different cultures.
44 More people are paying attention to traditional customs and they are proud of their own culture. They still celebrate big festivals like Christmas and Easter in their own ways. Families get together, share nice food and enjoy happy moments.
All these changes show that culture grows with time. 45 Old traditions and new lifestyles join together to make British culture full of charm and energy. The same is true for cultures all around the world.Every culture has its own special features and values. As middle school students, we should respect different cultures, learn from each other and share our own culture with others. The Earth is just like a big village and people all over the world are one big family.
A.But some old traditions are still important.
B.Life is becoming more colourful and convenient.
C.Now, they enjoy food from many other countries.
D.People today have more ways to relax and learn.

F.One big change is about people’s free-time activities.
G.They also like to learn more about foreign languages.

British culture has changed a lot over the years. 41 Many years ago, people spent most of their free time reading books or listening to the radio at home. They had few ways to enjoy themselves and hardly ever travelled to other countries. Today, things are very different. 42 With the help of new technology, they can get information from the Internet in seconds. Young people enjoy watching short videos, listening to popular music and chatting online with friends from all over the world.
People’s eating habits have changed too. In the past, British people only ate traditional food like fish and chips, bread and sandwiches.
E.Many young people don’t like any old traditions now.
