Coffee is an important part of Italian culture. I have been in Italy for over six months and I have drunk a lot of it!
Of course, coffee is also very popular in the UK, my home country, but coffee culture in Italy is a different story. In Italy, when you order a coffee in a bar (小馆子), you will get a small espresso. This is normal coffee for Italians and they are not so interested in the big coffee that we drink in the UK. And takeaway (外卖食物) coffee is very popular in the UK, but it is not very common at all in Italy. Usually, Italians like to drink coffee in a bar and, for many, this short time is an important part of their day.
Breakfast in a bar in Italy usually involves (包括) a coffee and a pastry (油酥糕点). I like this kind of breakfast. Cappuccino is a very popular coffee drink at breakfast time and, for me, a cappuccino and a pastry is the perfect way to start the day.
Finally, I have found that coffee in Italy is much cheaper than that in the UK. Normally, an espresso costs around €1.00 and a cappuccino about €1.50 in Italy! They are small, of course, but this means that in Italy it is possible to often go out for coffee and you won’t break the bank.
26. Where does the writer come from?
A. The USA. B. The UK. C. Italy. D. Canada.
27. Italians usually drink coffee _______.
A. in a bar B. after breakfast C. in a big cup D. at home
28. What is the perfect way to start the day for the writer?
A. Having a big breakfast. B. Exercising for a short time.
C. Having a cappuccino and a pastry. D. Enjoying takeaway coffee from a bar.
29. An espresso is about _______ cheaper than a cappuccino in Italy.
A. €0.50 B. €1.00 C. €1.50 D. €2.50
30. What does the underlined part “you won’t break the bank” mean in Chinese?
Think back to when you were in a classroom, maybe a math classroom and the teacher set a difficult problem. Which is your answer?
A: Oh no, this is too hard for me. I’m not even going to try and work it out.
B: Ah, this is quite hard but I like to push myself. Even if I don’t get the answer right, maybe I’ll learn something in the process.
Carol Dweck, the psychologist (心理学家) of Stanford University, gave problems to a group of ten-year-olds. One group said positively that they loved challenges and understood their abilities could be developed. Professor Dweck said they had a “growth mindset” and focused on what they could achieve in the future. But another group felt that their intelligence (智力) was being judged and they had failed. They had a “fixed mindset” and were unable to imagine improving. They even looked for someone who had done worse than them.
Professor Dweck believes that there is a problem in education at the moment. For years, children have been praised (表扬) for their intelligence or talent, but it makes them afraid to face failure. They want to please by getting high grades, but they are not really interested in learning.
According to Dweck, the solution is to praise the process of children who are making an effort when they face challenges in learning. This way they will become interested in getting better and achieve more. She thinks that keeping working hard over time is the key to success.
Psychologists have been testing these theories. They taught students if they left their comfort zone (区域) and learned something new and difficult, the neurons (神经元) in their brains would form stronger connections, making them more intelligent. In another study, some children who didn’t perform well made great progress after learning growth mindset skills for a year. They came top in tests, beating children from much better schools. These children had felt before that making an effort was a sign of foolishness, but they came to see it as the key to learning.
So, back to our question in the beginning. If you answered B, well done! You already have a growth mindset. If A, don’t worry. Everyone can be excellent with a little effort and self-awareness.
31. Who did Carol Dweck give problems to?
A. Twenty-year-olds. B. Fifteen-year-olds. C. Ten-year-olds. D. Five-year-olds.
32. Which of the following is the person with growth mindset?
A. He doesn’t want to experience what he doesn’t know.
B. He faces challenges positively to help himself grow.
C. He looks for someone who did worse than him.
D. He focuses on what he has achieved in the past.
33. What can we learn from Professor Dweck’s study?
A. Keeping working hard makes people afraid to face failure.
B. Guiding students to focus on learning process can help them achieve more.
C. Praising children for their intelligence has a positive influence on learning.
D. Intelligence or talent is the key to people’s success.
34. What’s the main idea of paragraph 4?
A. Practicing growth mindset skills helps students get improvement.
B. Staying in the comfort zone is a good way to be confident.
C. A person with a fixed mindset can improve himself in his comfort zone.
D. Testing students can often make them more intelligent.
35. What is the best title for this passage?
A. The Influence of Challenges: Fixed Mindset
B. The Importance of Success: Intelligence
C. The Power of Progress: Praise

结合“A line outside had been accidentally cut”,是电话“没信号、无法使用”,dead“失灵的”符合“线路被切断”的语境。
结合“so badly that he could hardly dial the number”,是“紧张得发抖”,shaking“发抖”符合“担心儿子们”的状态。
根据“We’ve been trying to call you all night, but you didn’t answer. We called the police and asked them to go and…you”可知,孩子联系不上父母,让警察去查看情况,“check on”是固定短语,意为“查看、核实(情况)”,契合“担心父母而让警察去确认情况”的语境。put on“穿上”、turn on“打开”、talk on“继续交谈”均不符合“警察的行为”的逻辑。
