Growing up on the land of Southern Illinois' Shawnee National Forest, I was surrounded by the splendid beauty of nature all year round. My parents deeply loved the natural world and passed this precious feeling on to my brother and me. During my childhood, we spent most of our time wandering in the woods, digging up ginseng, swimming in the clear creek, and observing wildlife around us. We frequently looked out for wild turkeys and deer, and occasionally spotted rare creatures like bobcats and coyotes.
To me, the birds, reptiles and various animals living in the forest were never merely strangers. I firmly believed that humans and animals were closely bonded. I once learned that all living creatures share the same breath on Earth. Every creature, regardless of size, has its own desires and fears, just like human beings. They also have similar emotional needs, longing for comfort, love and companionship. I often wondered whether they could feel the same close connection with me as I did with them. Though animals lack the ability to express their inner feelings in human ways, I was convinced that the spiritual bond between us existed all the time.
After my brother moved out to live alone, I still stayed with my parents in our quiet home, a perfect sanctuary for me. I never thought of leaving this peaceful place. Standing by the kitchen window, I would gaze at the green yard outside, feeling peaceful and grateful. This unique childhood experience in the forest greatly shaped my outlook on nature. It taught me to value every living creature and respect the balance between humans and nature. This special bond with nature has rooted deeply in my heart and become the most precious lifelong memory.
