My dad, Greg Newman, had wanted to be a race car driver, but things didn’t work out for him. So I guess having a son who could become a race car driver was the next best thing. Don’t get me wrong—Dad didn’t push me into racing. In fact, when I was about 10 years old, my dad was afraid that driving a car wasn’t my dream. So he took the racing away from me. I wasn’t very happy with that decision. It wasn’t long before Dad realised that racing was what I loved.
At four, Dad bought me my first Quarter Midget (袖珍赛车) and that’s really where it started for us. Back then, Dad was my coach. He would stick out (伸出) his foot in the path of the race car, and then tell me to exactly hit his foot. By doing this again and again, Dad believed that I would be faster and sharper on the race track.
Dad worked really long hours at his car repair business to make money so that I could race each weekend. I can remember that every night before he turned off the lights in the garage (车库), Dad would tell me,” Don’t forget to kiss your race car good night.” He was trying to teach me that if I show respect (尊重), it’s returned. He wanted me to show thankfulness and respect for my race car and for all the hard work that we and many others had put into the dream.
My dad, my mum and my sister gave up a lot of things to help me race. For us, there was no better moment than winning the 50th running of the Daytona 500 in 2018. That evening in February 2018, I knew I had gotten a good push. I could hear the excitement. My father couldn’t speak a word, and when he got to Victory Lane, he nearly knocked me over and gave me such a big hug.
24. What did Greg Newman do when his son was 10 years old?
A. He became a race car driver. B. He started a car repair shop.
C. He bought a Quarter Midget. D. He stopped his son to race.
25. Why did Greg Newman let his son hit his foot?
A. To help his son to be braver. B. To improve his son’s racing skills.
C. To have fun with his son. D. To make his son more careful.
26. What’s the purpose of kissing the race car good night?
A. To show respect and thankfulness.
B. To better prepare for the race.
C. To treat the race car as family member.
D. To develop a closer relationship with the race car.
27. What can we know about the author in the 50th running of the Daytona 500?
A. He fell down in the game. B. He won the race.
C. His father knocked him over. D. His mum gave him a hug.

Whether your garden is below a city window or in a big backyard, getting kids involved (参与) in taking care of plants can be a powerful teaching tool for subjects like science, maths, and reading. But the art of growing things can also develop important life skills in children.
Being patient is something many children find difficult, but also helps a kid stay calm in stressful situations. Life is a mixture of immediate and delayed (延误的) satisfaction, so children benefit from learning both. Good things come at the end of a growing season — like yummy fruit or pretty flowers — but kids have to wait for them. For longer-growth plants, kids can create a garden journal to document the progress of their young plants with words, drawings, or photos.
Additionally, working in a garden helps children experience various sounds, smells, and sights. The various sense experiences — the feel and smell of dirt, the sound and sight of water — help them focus on the moment and bring calm to them. At that moment, “they realise they have the power to control their big feelings and thoughts,” says child therapist (治疗师) Jennifer Couture. More importantly, parents should encourage kids to zone out while they’re doing a task again and again such as watering or digging. This can allow their minds to go freely, helping them find a moment of peace.
When kids realise that a garden is full of living things that need their help to survive, they can develop a sense of caring and thoughtfulness. Sometimes, a garden can also grow kindness, responsibility, and other values in kids.
28. How can kids learn to be patient from gardening?
A. By enjoying pretty things. B. By reading a garden journal.
C. By waiting for good things for long. D. By dealing with difficulties.
29. What can calm kids while they are gardening?
A. Various sense experiences. B. Good self-control ability.
C. Beautiful natural environment. D. Friendly family members.
30. What does the phrase “zone out” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Imagine. B. Talk. C. Relax. D. Play.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Process of Kids’ Gardening
B. Ways to Grow Kids’ Learning Skills
C. Kids’ Awareness of Protecting Nature
D. Gardening for Kids: More Than What You Know
D
Humans can race to get out of a hurricane’s path. Some animals can sense a hurricane coming and leave quickly, but there are animals that can’t simply get out of the way. Here are the various effects of hurricanes on animals.
Birds may be able to sense air pressure and other changes in the environment, which encourages them to get out of harm’s way. Some birds will even speed up their migration (迁徙) leaving earlier than usual if a serious hurricane is coming. However, strong winds can push birds hundreds of miles away from their home. Young or weak birds can become separated from the rest of their group and often have difficulty making it home.
Fish can also be influenced. After Hurricane Andrew in 1992, about 184 million fish died in south Louisiana’s Atchafalaya Basin alone. Strong winds blew leaves off trees, blowing them into wetlands. The rotting organic material (腐烂的有机物质) leads to extremely low levels of oxygen (氧气) in the water, killing the fish. Some fish will often find safe areas during hurricanes, but they’re not always safe. Dolphins have sometimes been blown to shore during big hurricanes.
There are many other dangers that come with hurricane-related water. Sharp rise of saltwater onshore can harm wildlife and plants that live in the freshwater and can’t bear the salt content. Heavy rain can also affect the balance of fresh and salt water in some areas, harming the creatures that live in them.
Many animals lose their usual food supply when a hurricane arrives, as strong winds and rains destroy trees of fruits, nuts and berries. During Hurricane Andrew, about one-quarter of Louisiana’s public oyster seed (牡蛎种苗) grounds were destroyed. Because the oysters were an important food for some birds on Louisiana’s barrier Islands, the birds suffered great death as a direct result of the hurricane.
32. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. Birds are used to a changing climate.
B. Birds’ homes are destroyed by hurricanes.
C. Birds can sense the coming of a hurricane.
D. Birds migrate at certain times of every year.
33. What causes fish to die after Hurricane Andrew in 1992?
A. Heavy rain. B. Low oxygen in water.
C. Air pollution. D. The loss of homes.
34. Which word can best describe the hurricane-related water?
A. Harmful. B. Deep. C. Fresh. D. Clean.
35. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Animals in the ocean. B. The importance of fresh water.
C. The living environment of birds. D. Hurricanes’ influence on animals.

My family just moved here from St. Louis. It was my first day at a new high school and the very day of soccer tryouts (选拔赛). Soccer is my life, played soccer, went to soccer games, and watched soccer on television with Mom and Dad. They even got me a magazine about soccer.
We left very early in the morning, planning to be at our new home before classes began. If everything had gone perfectly, there would have been time for me to find my new classes, meet people, and even warm up before the tryouts.
However, while we were driving to my new home, our car suddenly stopped working on the highway under the hot sun. We waited anxiously for two hours for a rescue, only to spend another two hours arranging for a rental car. The whole time, my heart was pounding with worry, afraid that I would miss the tryouts.
Finally, we arrived at the new school. The moment I got out of the cat, I rushed towards the headmaster’s office to report, out of breath. “Oh, Tina I think you’re too late for the tryouts. Coach Turner said they’d end at 3 pm,” said Headmaster Morgan. She glanced up at the clock and shook her head, “They’re almost finished.” Feeling defeated, I bit my lower lip and held back tears. All of a sudden, I saw the latest soccer magazine in my backpack. At that moment, my favorite words from the magazine rang in my head good player never gives up, even when the game seems lost.”

第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
“I m so sorry, but our car broke down”, I explained to the headmaster. I know I’m late, but I’ve been playing soccer my whole life. “This means everything to me. Please give me a chance to show what I can do.” I stared at the headmaster and begged, holding onto a tiny hope. Headmaster Morgan looked hesitant at first, her brows furrowed. But seeing the determination in my eyes, she let out a sigh and picked up the phone. “Coach Turner? There’s a determined girl here.” My heart raced as Headmaster Morgan finally pointed outside. “Go to the field quickly!”
“Three minutes,” Coach Turner said, rolling a soccer ball toward me. Without hesitation, I sprang into action. The wind rushed past my ears, and I could only hear the intense beating of my own heart. Sweat dripped down my neck as three defenders charged. I passed right, moved left, and then shot with my left foot. Finally, the ball flew over the goalkeeper’s hands, and went into the net. The coach’s eyes widened in surprise. I held my breath, waiting for his decision. “Welcome to the team,” Coach Turner announced, and I couldn’t help breaking into a huge smile. I knew it was my love for soccer that kept me from giving up.
