Do you know Arctic foxes? Arctic foxes are a kind of foxes that live on the land and sea ice within the Arctic Circle (北极圈). Winter in the Arctic is quite different. From October to February, the sun never rises.
Luckily, these small foxes have a wonderful ability to live in the icy Arctic. Their thick fur coats and long, furry tails keep their bodies warm. Their feet also have thick fur like built-in snow boots. This makes their prey harder to hear their footsteps. And their white coats make it difficult for predators such as wolves, polar bears and golden eagles to find them among ice and snow.
When it’s not trying to keep warm, an Arctic fox is on the way to hunt for food. They prefer to eat small lemmings (旅鼠). But when times are difficult, they will eat whatever they can find: insects, berries... Sometimes an Arctic fox will follow a polar bear on a hunting trip and eat the polar bear’s leftovers.
If a fox can’t find food, or if the weather gets really bad, it can dig a hole, and slow down its heart rate. This helps the animal save energy so it doesn’t have to eat so much.
Once the animal comes out of its den (兽穴), it’ll try to hunt again. With food in its belly, the Arctic fox has a better chance of making it through another long, dark night.
56. How does the writer start the text?
A. By giving an example. B. By asking a question.
C. By giving a suggestion. D. By showing a picture.
57. According to the text, what makes it easier for the foxes to catch the prey?
A. The thick fur coat. B. The long tail.
C. The feet with thick fur. D. The ice and snow.
58. What may an Arctic fox do in the worst time?
A. Sleep in a den. B. Follow a polar bear.
C. Make a coat. D. Eat small foxes.
59. Which is the right structure of the text? (①=Paragraph 1 ②=Paragraph 2, …)
A. B. C. D.

We usually go to see a doctor when we are ill. Doctors may give us some medicine, and the medicine often makes us feel better.
But sometimes the doctor’s medicine doesn’t work. This happened to one man, Thomas Smith. He was ill in hospital, but he wasn’t getting well. Then he found a new “doctor” inside himself. He saw funny films. He read funny books. And something wonderful happened. Laughing took away his pain after half a year. He could have a good night’s rest. His own happy feeling helped him get well again. He wrote his story in his book. He said laughing was very useful. It was the best “medicine”.
Another man, Simon Beck, was also ill, and he had a serious pain in his back. The doctor couldn’t stop it, so the man began to “picture” his pain. In his head he “drew” a picture of a dog. He imagined it to be a real dog. And it was hurting him. Then the man talked softly to the dog. He put his hand on the dog’s head and made friends with it. One year later, his pain went away!
These stories may surprise you, but more and more people are getting well in this way. So call on the “doctor” inside your mind, and keep happy and well!
