Text 3.
W:My doctor says I need to drink more water, but I prefer sugary juice.
M:Yeah, but water would be much better for you.
W:Okay,I'm going to give it a shot.
Text 4.
W:How is your car mechanics class going,Jake?
M:I dropped it.
W:Really? Then you must be taking the cookery class.
M:No,I got a new camera for my last birthday,so I have decided to learn how to use it properly.
Text 5.
W:What made you decide to become a civil engineer?
M:Well,I've always wanted to do something practical, and civil engineering just hits the spot.
W:Why do you want to work with our company?
M:Um,your company is well known and hopefully I'll have opportunities to develop my skills.
Text 6.
W:Have you heard that the contract has been cancelled?
M:Yes,you must be really annoyed after all the work you put into it.
W:Yes,I was.The client was really positive about it but they were in some financial difficulty.
M:It was a huge contract, wasn't it?What are you going to do now?
W:Well,we've just had a big order from another client so that's taken pressure off.
Text 7.
W:You will never believe what happened in chemistry class today.
M:Let me guess, you mixed the wrong liquids and caused a big fire.
W:Not exactly.John said something to me so I turned around.
M:And you knocked the test tubes over.

of the most common techniques.
W:What kind of things can be upcycled?
M:Almost anything.Whatever your item,I guarantee you'll leave the show today with the skills needed to make amazing
things for your home.
W:Okay,Thomas, let's take a quick break for some commercials from our sponsors and we'll be right back.
Text 9.
M:I've been thinking a lot about our living situation lately, especially with the kids needing more personal space.
W:I've noticed that, too, and working from home has made it even harder to find a quiet corner.
M:I looked at some listings online last night, and there are a few bigger houses still within our budget.
W:That sounds promising, but I worry about the longer travel time if we move farther from the city center.
M:Most of the places I saw are close to public transport.
W:What about our kids?New schools?
M:I looked into that as well. The nearby schools actually have newer facilities and smaller class sizes.
W:That's amazing but moving means a lot of extra work and unexpected costs.
M:True, but staying here may limit the kids'growth.
W:Maybe we should visit a few places in person first.
M:I agree.
Text 10.
W:Good afternoon, everyone.Thank you for coming to the Riverside Community Sports Center. Before you start using
the facilities,I'd like to go over a few important updates and services we now provide.

on their phones at the gate. This change is meant to save time, especially during busy hours.
In addition, the center has added several indoor spaces for different needs. If you prefer calm exercise, there is a stretching
room on the second floor. For group activities, the large hall near the entrance is available throughout the day.
Free Internet access is provided in all rest areas.
Finally,we now offer weekly guided fitness sessions led by trained coaches. These sessions focus on basic strength, balance
and flexibility and are suitable for beginners as well as old members.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask our staff. We hope you enjoy your time here.

grass,can deliver greater cardiovascular benefits.”,可知,树木在住宅500米内的保护效果显著,且城市规划中优先种植
树木能带来更大的心血管健康益处,由此可推知城市规划应更重视植树,故答案为C。

confirm if the pattern applies to men and diverse populations.Still, its large scale and long duration make the findings reli-
able:trees,not grass,are linked to healthier hearts.”,可知,研究者虽指出研究对象的局限性,需更多研究验证普适性,
但也认可研究规模和时长让“树木对心脏健康有益”的结论可靠,由此可见其态度是谨慎肯定的,故答案为B。

and better understand our folk music, such as erhu and guzheng.Besides,it's a good way to relax after busy study and help in-

短文续写:
In the testing lab the doctor helped him lie down and explained the treatment softly. The doctor said the drug would flow
into his body slowly, and he needed to stay calm.Alexander nodded, his eyes fixed on the eagle-shaped decoration on the
wall, holding fast to his hope. The cool liquid entered his body.He held his fists, fighting through the waves of dizziness that
washed over him,his mind filled with the sight of a normal life and the home he'd longed for.Time passed by,and he gradu-
ally lost consciousness.
When opening his eyes again,Alexander saw the doctor's tired but relieved face."You made it,"the doctor said, patting
his hand gently.Alexander tried to move his fingers, and he could feel the missing piece in his heart jumping alive. He sat up
slowly,no longer feeling the emptiness that had followed him for 11 years.Outside the window, the eagle was still circling,
and sunlight streamed in,wrapping him in warmth. In that moment,he knew he'd found his wholeness, and the dream of
going home was finally within reach.

cation in a new way.Among the many high-quality kids'podcasts, several are outstanding for their
unique features and ability:
Story Pirates is an attractive audio show performed by real actors, comedians, and entertainers.
What makes it special is that all the stories told are created by kids themselves. With interesting episodes
like "Eat a Spider Day"and "Princess Lifeguard Camp,"its silly and creative tales never fail to keep kids
fully focused and entertained.
Little Stories for Tiny People is an ideal choice for parents who want to test their kids'interest in
podcasts. Most of its stories are around 10 minutes long-some shorter, some longer, and all are original
works that mainly tell whimsical tales about animals. In addition, the podcast includes a few
quiet bedtime tales, which are perfect for helping kids relax before going to sleep.
Speaking of bedtime,Peace Out is another excellent choice for evening relaxation. There's no
magic way to get kids to calm down at night, but this podcast comes close. Its calming stories focus on
teaching kids mindfulness and meditation(),serving as a perfect introduction to help them develop

An ambitious project to restore a 4.3-mile stretch of the rare River Ash to its original course has
been completed, according to Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust. The trust described the project,lo-
cated at the Easneye Estate near Hertford,as a landmark one and one of the largest of its kind in the
county. It took nearly eight years to plan and carry out,and also created a variety of new wetland habi-
tats along the river.
Sarah Perry,a worker in charge of the project, stated that the project would help protect the area
from flooding and maintain the ecosystem balance. She added that the River Ash is one of only about
260 chalk rivers in the world-rare and unique river systems that support vulnerable(and en-
dangered species, such as water mice, wild brown fish, and kingfishers.
Despite their preciousness, chalk rivers have long been menaced by human activities,as well as
pollution,over-abstraction(过度取水),and the increasing impacts of climate change, with droughts
and floods becoming more frequent. To address these issues, the restoration work included restoring the
artificially straightened river to its natural winding path, reconnecting it to its floodplain, and raising the
river bed with over 3,000 tons of stones.More than 300 woody features were placed in the water to
shelter fish, and fifteen new ponds were also created.
Ms.Perry expressed her satisfaction, saying it was rewarding to see such a large project completed

Every year in the U.S.,30%of fruit and vegetables grown by hard-working farmers never leave
the field, mainly because they fail to meet appearance standards such as size, shape,or color. This results
in an estimated $13 billion in economic losses for growers, while communities also lose the chance to
put the produce that should reach their kitchen tables.
To solve this problem, revaluing imperfect produce is a better way. That's where secondary mar-
kets come in,turning waste into opportunity.Secondary markets buy what the primary market forgoes
()and then channel it into ingredients for buyers and processors where appearance doesn't matter,
without sacrificing taste or quality.
Not all produce needs to end up in grocery store displays.Processing channels like frozen, dried
and meal kits offer enormous potential to use every strawberry, apple and tomato that comes out of the
field. In Tennessee field studies, researchers found that 76%of the produce left unharvested was still
marketable or edible(可食用的)一the kind of second-pass fruit and vegetables that a secondary market
can collect and sell into frozen or foodservice channels.
Companies like Chobani are leading this shift.Partnering with Planet Harvest,an organization that
creates secondary markets for farmers,Chobani bought over 1.2 million pounds of imperfect strawber-
ries this yearenough to produce over 55 million yogurt drinks. This initiative not only increases
farmers'income but also helps save valuable resources that would otherwise be wasted. Many partici-
pating farmers have reported earning extra income from fruits once considered useless, which greatly
eases their economic pressure.Besides, this cooperation cuts greenhouse gas emissions()by 20%
and diversifies the supply chain, making the food system more sustainable.More food companies are
now following Chobani's example, expanding their purchases of imperfect produce to support farmers
and reduce waste.
Consumers also play a vital role.By accepting whole-harvest products made from otherwise
wasted produce, they support a smarter food system that prioritizes management over waste. The author
emphasizes that we don't need to grow more food to help solve hunger;we need to be better users of
what we already grow.

A study tracking nearly 90,000 American nurses for 18 years found that neighborhoods with more
visible trees had about 4%lower rates of heart attack, while areas with more grass had about 6%higher
rates. These are relative differences, not guaranteed changes for any individual.By analyzing 350 million
street-view photos with Al,researchers discovered that not all green space is equally beneficial for car-
diovascular(心血管的)health.
For decades, public health experts have advised people to enjoy nature, assuming all green spaces
are equally good.However,this research shows a clear distinction:satellite images can't tell tree-shaded
streets from grass-covered suburbs, but they affect heart health differently.Even after considering factors
like smoking, diet, exercise, income and air pollution, trees still appeared protective while grass did not.
Researchers suggest several reasons for this difference.Trees trap harmful pollution particles(
)cool neighborhoods far more effectively than grasslands-this is critical during heat waves that put
great stress on the heart and blood vessels(Il).They also reduce loud traffic noise, which previous
research has linked to high blood pressure and increased heart disease risk.Additionally,tree-lined
streets are more inviting, encouraging people to walk more and have more social interaction, both of
which benefit heart health.Grass,by contrast, offers few of these benefits-regular cutting creates noise
and air pollution, and it provides little cooling and offers insufficient measures to deal with pollution.
The protective effect of trees was most obvious within 500 meters of people's homes, not just the
immediate 100 meters, which is good news for urban planning.Prioritizing trees in cities, rather than
grass,can deliver greater cardiovascular benefits.
Notably, the study followed only female nurses,so more research is needed to confirm if the pat-
tern applies to men and diverse populations.Still, its large scale and long duration make the findings re-
liable:trees, not grass, are linked to healthier hearts.
32.How does the author mainly develop Paragraph 3?
A.By giving examples.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By listing research data.
D.By using famous sayings.
33.What do the study's findings suggest?
A.Grass brings no benefits to the urban environment at all.
B.The study's results are applicable to all populations worldwide.
C.Urban planning should attach more importance to planting trees.
D.Heart attack rates will drop by 4%if people live near tree-lined streets.
34.What is the researchers'attitude towards the effect of trees on cardiovascular health?
A.Totally doubtful.
B.Cautiously positive
C.Extremely optimistic.
D.Unnecessarily worried.

Deep reading, defined as immersive engagement with text that promotes comprehension and crit-
ical thinking,is increasingly rare in the digital age.36 For students and professionals alike, reclaiming
this skill can unlock new levels of learning and insight. Here are four evidence-based strategies to cul-
tivate deep reading habits.
First,practice "pre-reading setup"to prepare your mind for engagement.Before diving into a text,
spend 5-10 minutes examining its structure:scan headings,subheadings,and topic sentences.37This
initial framework helps you organize new information and connect it to existing knowledge.
Second, minimize distractions to enter a state of"flow"with the text.Digital devices are the big-
gest troublemaker-studies show even passive phone presence reduces reading comprehension by
27%.38Create a dedicated reading space free of screens, and consider using tools like website
blockers during reading sessions. For longer texts, work in 25-minute intervals to maintain focus with-
out mental fatigue.
_39 Instead of highlighting every other sentence, use active note-taking methods:circle key
terms, write marginal notes to challenge arguments, and draw connections between paragraphs. One
effective technique is the "SQ3R"method-Survey,Question,Read,Recite,Review-which in-
tegrates active engagement with periodic recall.
Finally,engage in "post-reading reflection"to solidify understanding.After finishing a text,take
10 minutes to summarize its main points in your own words.40Discussing the text with peers or
writing a short response also strengthens memory and critical analysis.Think of this step as "closing the
loop"-it transforms passive absorption into active mastery.
By combining these strategies, you can rebuild the lost art of deep reading. In an era of information
overload, this skill isn't just valuable-it's essential for making sense of complex ideas.
A.Active note-taking is key to deep reading.
B.This practice is far more effective than passive skimming.
C.Distractions not only reduce focus but also impair memory consolidation.
D.However, digital tools can also enhance deep reading with interactive features.
E.You can also sum up the text in a single paragraph to test your comprehension.
F.This helps you identify the author's main arguments and structural logic in advance.
G.Many like to read in a shallow way-scanning for key words instead of deep engagement.

Eleven years earlier,an accident had taken a central piece of Alexander of Severe, and he was des-
perate to recover it.Tired of being locked in the institution with its cold machines and grey walls,he
also insisted on the dream of going home again. But after failure and failure, each attempt crushing his
spirit a little more,it seemed impossible for him to get into the normal world again.
When doctors asked if he wanted to "jump into a frying pan"-their way of suggesting a new,
untested treatment trial-Alexander of Severe agreed at once.
The doctors assured him the treatment,to be given far from the city in a quiet, wooded medical
facility, had worked well on animals, with most showing remarkable improvements.Alexander signed
his agreement immediately and rode to the testing facility with the help of a gentle doctor who'd long
sympathized with his struggle.
During the journey,he stared at the outside world he hadn't seen in 11 years,at green trees
swaying in the wind and blue sky streaked with clouds, wondering about his forgotten past-maybe he
was a painter,or a great singer.
Upon arriving, they stayed for the night in a simple but bright room, and the next morning the
doctor sat with Alexander and told him the truth:some animal subjects had died from unexpected side
effects, and he might die, too."I want to help you,"the doctor said.
"That's okay,Doc,"he said,as he looked at the trees in the distance."Maybe I'll find my missing
piece."The doctor stood, and they walked toward the testing lab side by side.Alexander raised his face
to the sky, where an eagle circled high above, its wings outstretched-a silent sign of hope for the
wholeness he'd sought for so long.
