You can't help waking up your teenagers for fear of them wasting their day,but allowing them to sleep
longer on weekends may actually be of benefit to their mental health. This is the conclusion of a study by
researchers at the University of Oregon and the State University of New York Upstate Medical University,
which found that young people aged 16-24 who caught up on lost sleep during the weekend had a significantly
lower risk of being depressive.
In the study, participants reported their usual bedtimes and wake-up times on both weekdays and
weekends, allowing researchers to work out their "weekend catch-up sleep"-the difference between average
weekend sleep and weekday sleep. Each subject was also asked about their emotional well-being.Researchers
found teenagers and young adults who made up for lost sleep on weekends showed a lower risk of being
depressive.
The scientists recommend that teenagers get between 8 and 10 hours of sleep every night, but agree that
perfect sleep schedules are often unrealistic for teens considering school, homework, extracurricular activities,
social lives and-for many-part-time jobs.Biology plays a major role in the problem of lack of sleep among
teenagers.During the teenage years,circadian rhythms-the body's internal clock-move later,making it

harder for teens to fall asleep early."Instead of getting up early in the morning, you're going to become more
of a night owl,"Casement, the leader author of the study, explained."And sleep onset keeps holding over
until age 18 to 20.After that, you will get up early as usual again."
"Depression is one of the leading causes of disability among people aged 16 to 24,"Casement noted. In this
context, disability refers broadly to damaged daily functioning, including difficulty in attending school or work,
frequent absences or lateness."It makes that age range of particular interest in trying to understand risk factors

As the world's need for electronics grows ever bigger, the other side of the coin-e-waste-is raising
alarms. Most of the e-waste was sent to landfills or burned, with possible negative influences on the
environment and human health. There's also an amazing economic loss,as $62 billion-worth of recoverable
resources are lost.
With e-waste rising five times faster than recycling rates, new solutions to the problem can't come soon
enough.Aquafade could be one-一a fully water-dissolving plastic(可溶于水的塑料)that dissolves completely in
about six hours when placed in water. It could be used to pack electronics and dissolved when the electronic is
no longer wanted, making it easier to recycle the most valuable parts and reducing the amount of e-waste."For
most electronic products,when they're being recycled,it's the disassembly (that's the real trouble,and
really needs a large amount of human resources,"said Samuel Wangsaputra, one of the inventors of Aquafade.
"One night I was doing the dishes, and I was looking at a dishwasher bag,"Wangsaputra said, attracted
by the water-dissolving film."And I thought,where does the film go?So I tried one,just in water,and it fully
disappeared."And now Wangsaputra has found a material called Aquafade. It is only applied to the outer shell,
making the product water resistant(有抵抗力的)up to five meters for30 minutes.“But once you take off just
one part from the product and you put it in water.Five to six hours later,it will dilute, and what's left is milky
water and the most valuable parts of the electronics,"said Wangsaputra.
The first commercial application for Aquafade is likely to be as the casing for LED wristbands worn at
concerts. While they are currently more focused on single-use electronics, they would eventually like to see
Aquafade shells used on all kinds of devices. For now,Aquafade is double the cost of regular plastics, but
Wangsaputra said wholesale production will make it cheaper.
32.What does the author mainly discuss in the first paragraph?
A.The new solution to e-waste.
B.The recycling process of electronics.

A.Break down.
B.Spread out.
C.Hold off.
D.Mix up.
35.What is Samuel Wangsaputra's attitude toward the future of Aquafade?
A.Doubtful.
B.Cautious.

The Art of Active Listening
In our busy lives,we often focus on learning how to speak well to express our ideas.36 Active
listening is a skill that can improve your relationships and help you learn better. Here are some tips to become
a better listener.
Put away distractions
To listen actively, you must give the speaker your full attention.37 When you are looking at your
screen, you are telling the other person that they are not important.Put your phone in your pocket and look at
the person who is talking.
Show that you are listening
38 Nod your head, smile, and maintain eye contact.Verbal encouragement is also helpful.Simple
words like "I see"or "Go on"encourage the speaker to continue. These small signals show that you are
listening attentively and following their train of thought.
Don't interrupt
It is natural to want to jump in with your own opinion or a similar story.39 Interrupting breaks the
speaker's train of thought.Wait until they have finished their point before you ask questions or share your
views.
Summarize what you heard
When the person finishes speaking, try to repeat the main idea back to them in your own words. You
might say,"So,what you are saying is..."40 It also gives the speaker a chance to clarify if you
misunderstood something.
A.However,try to hold back.
B.Use body language to indicate you are engaged.
C.Listening is a natural talent that cannot be taught.
D.However, listening is just as important as speaking.
E.This confirms that you truly understood the message.

A violent storm swept across northern Thailand one dark night, tearing through the forest with strong
winds and terrible rain. When the winds finally died down,Somchai,a responsible park ranger, went into the
damaged forest despite the danger.Deep in the mud,he discovered a baby elephant, who was separated from
his mother by the rushing floodwater. The elephant's eyes, filled with fear, touched Somchai's heart instantly.
Without hesitation,he calmed the trembling creature and carried him to the elephant conservation center.
At first, the baby elephant, who was named Boonmee, refused to eat anything.Fortunately,Somchai was
patient.Every day,he brought fresh bamboo and bananas, sitting beside Boonmee and talking to him softly.
Gradually,Boonmee began to trust Somchai, and followed him around the center like a loyal dog.
As months turned into years,Boonmee grew from a shy, frightened baby into a playful elephant under
Somchai's care.Every morning,he would wake Somchai by gently touching his face with the tip of his trunk,
a gesture that never failed to make the ranger smile. They bathed together in the cool river, played games
among the banana trees, and shared meals together.Somchai sometimes led Boonmee on forest walks where
the elephant learned to identify eatable plants and avoid dangers. These moments, filled with laughter and
learning,deepened their connection.
As Boonmee grew stronger and taller, however, the center decided that he must be released into a
protected forest.Though his heart ached,Somchai understood that true love sometimes means letting go.
On the day of release,Somchai walked Boonmee to the edge of the forest. He patted Boonmee's head and
whispered,"Go,my dear friend. The forest is your home now."Boonmee hesitated, looking back at him.
Finally,after a long,silent moment,the young elephant raised his trunk,touched Somchai's shoulder one last
time, and disappeared slowly into the trees.Wiping his tears,Somchai turned away and returned to his duties,
never expecting to see Boonmee again.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
A decade passed, and Somchai retired and lived in a village near the forest.

A decade passed, and Somchai retired and lived in a village near the forest. One afternoon, while drinking tea in
his backyard,Somchai heard heavy footsteps approaching.Looking up,he froze-a massive elephant stood outside
his garden, staring directly at him with familiar, gentle eyes.It was Boonmee!Somchai stood up,tears streaming
down his face.He walked closer and placed his hand on Boonmee s head, and the elephant let out a soft sound, full
of joy and comfort
Boonmee staved near Somchai s house for three days.He followed Somchai around and slept outside the fence
every night,as if they were back to the old days at the conservation center. On the fourth morning,Boonmee touched
Somchai s hand one last time, then turned and walked slowly into the forest.Somchai watched him leave, smiling
through tears.Though they parted again, their bond would never fade. For Somchai,it was the best gift-proof that
