Yolanda Davis-Overstreet is a community organizer in Los Angeles who works to
make streets safer, especially in neighborhoods with fewer resources. As a lifelong
cyclist, she knows well the risks people face when walking or riding bikes in these areas.
Her efforts focus on"mobility justice",which means giving everyone equal and safe ways
to move around their community.
Her work became more active in 2013,when her daughter started school near a
dangerous street.Davis-Overstreet led a local campaign to improve safety at the crossing
near the school. At that time, there were no proper traffic signals, and accidents
happened often. She collected photos and videos to show the problem and worked with
others to call for change.
Davis-Overstreet grew up in the same area and has seen how some communities are
often ignored in city planning. In many neighborhoods, especially those with large Black
or Latino populations, there are few sidewalks, bike lanes ()or safe crossings. As
a result, people who depend on walking or cycling face greater danger. In fact, most
serious traffic accidents in Los Angeles occur on a small number of streets in these areas.
To solve these problems,Davis-Overstreet has worked with city departments and
local groups. She has supported projects such as building bike lanes, adding crosswalks,
英语试题(二)第3页(共8页)
and improving public spaces. In 2011,she also created a program to educate people about
safe travel and the history of Black cyclists.
Although progress has been made, challenges remain. Some drivers still ignore new
traffic rules, and safety improvements can take years to complete. However, changes
like new traffic lights and marked crossings have already helped reduce speed and improve
safety near schools.
Davis-Overstreet believes that safer streets can also improve health, reduce
pollution, and build stronger communities. She continues to speak out and take action,
encouraging others to join her efforts. For her, real change requires courage, patience,
and the determination to keep moving forward, even when progress seems slow.
24.Why did Davis-Overstreet begin her local campaign?
A.To support cycling as a sport.
B.To improve safety near a school.
装
C.To reduce traffic near her home.
D.To change rules for city drivers.

A.Advancing public facilities.
B.Designing new traffic rules.
C.Reducing poverty in the area.
D.Teaching cycling skills to children.

A.Slow but promising.
B.Quick and fruitful.

A.Look before you leap.
B.Practice makes perfect.

D.All good things come to an end.
Reacting has become our preset.A teenager worsens when a selfie (lacks

likes;a parent reads a critical email and assumes their career is at risk;a friend explodes
over a post not meant for them. These quick increases reflect what I call an overreaction
epidemic(流行病):small causes snowball into extremely intense outbursts.
After I wrote about the topic, thousands messaged me.Some accused me of being
tone-deaf,arguing I was asking people to "calm down"while serious problems existed.
Others insisted our constant state of panic cannot last long-we cannot fight for what is
right if emotionally exhausted. All these views hold truth.Their passion highlights why
we need a clearer conversation about emotion regulation.Let's be clear:Anger, fear and
sadness are not weaknesses-they show we care. But the solution to overreaction is
emotion regulation;a set of learned skills for managing feelings wisely. It's about
choosing responses that reflect our goals and values.
Many misunderstand regulation as silencing emotion. But it is about choice.Anger
signals unfairness. The challenge is that uncontrolled anger can become destructive.Civil
线
rights leaders succeeded not because they lacked anger, but because they channeled it
without being consumed.
So what does healthy regulation look like?It involves naming emotions accurately,
reframing situations to find hope, stopping to think before acting, and choosing rest and
connection to avoid burnout.Without these skills, strong anger can turn into helplessness.
With them, strong anger becomes fuel for sustained, wise action.
Importantly,we almost never regulate alone. We shape one another's emotional
states constantly. That process is called co-regulation.When we co-regulate with
warmth and empathy,we lend our stability to one another. That is why movements last
only when people create an atmosphere of safety and trust.
We live in challenging times. No one is suggesting we look away.Emotion
regulation is not acceptance. It equips us to face crises without losing ourselves-or one
another-in the process.

Currently, scientists have to dig lots of holes to study the soil. This process is
time-consuming and damages its structure, making results less accurate. To solve this
problem,a team of soil experts created the Earth Rover programme. They use

beneath the surface. The waves are also affected by how dry the soil is,so the method
can detect when crops need more water or when organic matter is needed.
"Soil is one of our most precious resources",says soil scientist Prof Simon Jeffery.
"Nearly all the food we eat comes from soil.Yet poor farming practices, together wi
climate change, have damaged soils worldwide.Crop yields in some regions are expected
to drop by 50%.One major problem is that farmers lack detailed information about their
land.Soil conditions can change from meter to meter within the same field, but these
线
differences are invisible from the surface. As a result, farmers often treat whole fieids
the same way, which harms wildlife and wastes money.
Peter Mosongo,a soil scientist in Kenya, says this new technology could be life-changing.
He recalls a farmer near Mount Kenya who had never tested his soil because labs were
too far away. With soilsmology, farmers can learn exactly what their soil needs, increase
crop yields,and reduce flood risk.
Soil forms very slowly-it can take 500 years to build just one centimeter.Yet that
same soil can wash away in a single afternoon. If we run out of soil,we run out of food.
32.What does the underlined word "gauge"in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Replace.
B.Measure.
C.Compare.
D.Record.
33.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The origin of the soilsmology.
B.The role of waves in detection.
C.The mechanism of soilsmology.
D.The limitation of traditional methods.

34.Why is lacking detailed soil information a problem for farmers?
A.They cannot afford soil testing labs.
B.They have to travel far for soil tests.
C.They are unaware of how to treat fields.
D.They miss hidden differences in their land.
35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Soil damage cannot be predicted.
B.Soil forms faster in warmer climates.
C.Soil protection is essential for survival.
D.Soil loss is a slow and natural process.

What do Olympic champions Dame Kelly Holmes,Simone Biles, and Michael
Phelps have in common?Their secret is sports visualization.
Visualization means painting a vivid, living picture in your mind.It is not just
wishful daydreaming. It is intentional mental rehearsal ()36 You hear the
cheering crowd. You feel the track beneath your feet. You smell the sweat on your
sportswear.
To build a champion's mindset, sports psychologists rely on the PETTLEP model.
Follow these core rules to make your mental practice highly effective.
Reproduce the PHYSICAL:Feel your heart beating and your muscles firing.
Match the ENVIRONMENT:37
Time it PERFECTLY:Rehearse your movements in real-time,not in slow motion.
Channel the EMOTION:Accept your actual race-day adrenaline(肾上腺素)and nervous
energy.
You can view your performance in two distinct ways.38 In the process, you
look out through your own eyes.External visualization is like watching yourself on a
television screen to assess your form. Both are vital tools.
39 Michael Phelps,a swimmer, actively imagines his goggles (filling
with water during a race.He mentally rehearses his calm reaction. When real chaos
strikes,he never panics because he already holds the solution.
This technique isn't magic. It is hard science.Vivid mental rehearsals fire the exact
same brain pathways as actual physical movement. You are literally programming your
brain to win.40
So try recording a detailed audio script(音频脚本)on your phone describing your
perfect performance.Listen to it daily.See your victory long before you step onto the
field.

upset.Desperate to fix the mistake, she searched online stores for fast delivery and

other choice, she posted a message in a neighborhood social media group, explaining her
situation and asking for help.
