One of them was carrying food to the locked hut (木屋). “Are you going to feed the dogs?” Tom asked him. “No, Master. This is for the runaway slave.” So we were right! Jim was in the hut. We started digging the tunnel (隧道) to the hut that night. It was hard and it took us two nights to finish it. We came up under Jim’s bed. He was very surprised to see us. “Hello, Jim! We’re going to rescue (救) you.” Tom said. “But we aren’t ready to do it yet. You’ll have to wait a couple of days. Don’t worry! You’ll soon be free!” Then we crawled (爬) through the tunnel back to our bedroom. We sat on the bed and talked about a rescue plan. “I’m going to write a letter to Uncle.” Tom said. “Of course I won’t sign it.” “I’m going to warn him that somebody is planning to steal (偷) the runaway slave.” “Why are you going to do that, Tom?” “Well, Huck, if Uncle Silas knows, he’ll try to stop the thieves. The adventure (冒险) will be more exciting if somebody tries to stop us.” I didn’t understand why we had to look for trouble but I said nothing. Tom always knew best. So he wrote the letter and I climbed out of the window and put it under the front door. Uncle Silas found it in the morning. After reading it, he went out without finishing his breakfast. At half past eleven we climbed out of the bedroom window and went to the hut. “Come on, Jim!” Tom said, “Huck, you go first. Then you, Jim. I will go last.” We heard someone opening the door of the hut. A man shouted. “He’s gone! The thieves have stolen the runaway slave!” We quickly crawled out of the other end and ran towards the fence (篱笆). I turned around and saw a crowd of men outside the hut. They were carrying guns and looking for the thief. I climbed over the fence and Jim followed me. Tom was right behind us. Unluckily, he caught his trousers on a nail. He pulled them free but the man heard the noise. They pointed their guns at us. “Answer! Or we’ll shoot (开枪).” they shouted. We didn’t answer. We ran and then the men started shooting. We ran faster. We ran to the river, jumped into the canoe and started paddling (划桨). The men were still looking for us but we were safe in the canoe. “Jim! You’re a free man!” I said. Jim was very happy. We were all happy. “It was a great adventure.” Tom said. “I even got a bullet (子弹) in my leg!” It was true. His leg was bleeding badly. Jim and I found some old shirts and wrapped them round Tom’s leg. “We must get a doctor.” Jim said. “No! I don’t want a doctor.” Tom shouted. But I agreed with Jim. “Tom Sawyer! Among all the books, there is a special one that is loved by both children and adults—it is The Little Prince. Written by the French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, this short novel has been translated into more than 300 languages and has sold over 200 million copies around the world. It is not just a children’s story, but a meaningful book that teaches us about love, friendship and the true meaning of life. The story begins with a pilot who crashes his plane in the Sahara Desert. There, he meets a little prince from a tiny planet called Asteroid B-612. The little prince is a kind and curious boy with golden hair. He left his planet because he had a quarrel with his rose, a beautiful but proud flower. During his journey in the universe, he visits six planets, where he meets strange adults—a king who rules nothing, a conceited man who craves admiration, a businessman who counts stars he thinks he owns, a lamplighter who is loyal to his duty, and a geographer who only believes in books. Each of these adults represents a kind of empty and meaningless life. Finally, the little prince arrives on Earth. He meets a fox, who teaches him an important lesson: “What is essential is invisible to the eye; one must look with the heart.” With the fox’s help, the little prince understands the true love between him and his rose. He also realizes that the most valuable things in life are not wealth, power or fame, but the feelings we share with others. At the end of the story, the little prince decides to return to his planet to take care of his rose, leaving the pilot with a deep memory and a new understanding of life. The Little Prince is a perfect book for teenagers. It is easy to read with simple language and interesting stories, but it also contains deep truths. Reading this book can help us learn to be kind, cherish friendship and look at the world with a pure heart. It reminds us not to become the empty adults in the story, but to keep our childlike innocence and love for life. However, some of the deep meanings in the book may be a little difficult to understand at first. We can read it slowly, think about the characters and their stories, and discuss it with our friends or teachers to get more insights.Part 2: Skills Challenge Task 1: Critical Thinking (根据文章内容回答下列问题) 1.Why is The Little Prince loved by both children and adults? My favourite book is The Old Man and the Sea. It was written in 1952 by the American writer Ernest Hemingway. The book became 7 very quickly. In 1953, it won the Pulitzer Prize. The main character is a fisherman who hasn’t caught anything for months. One day he catches a huge fish, but he has to fight for days to 8 it. He finally succeeds, but he can’t pull the fish onto his boat. On his way back, sharks eat it, leaving nothing but bones. This book has taught me not to give up or doubt 9 . I’m inspired by how hard the fisherman fights, even though he loses the fish in the end. As Hemingway said, “Man is not made for defeat. It tells the story of a Buddhist monk named Tang Sanzang and his three disciples — Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing. Together, they travel to the West to find sacred Buddhist scriptures. At the beginning of the journey, each disciple has serious weaknesses. Sun Wukong is powerful but very naughty and impatient. He often causes trouble and does not listen to Tang Sanzang. Zhu Bajie is greedy and lazy. He wants to give up whenever the journey becomes difficult. Sha Wujing is quiet and hardworking, but he lacks confidence and is not strong enough to fight powerful enemies alone. Tang Sanzang himself is gentle and kind, but he cannot fight or protect anyone. He can only teach them and guide them. Many people doubted whether this strange group could succeed. However, as they travel together, they learn to help each other. Sun Wukong becomes more responsible. He uses his great powers to protect the group and fight evil spirits. Zhu Bajie learns to work harder. Sha Wujing becomes braver. And Tang Sanzang teaches them to be kind and never give up. One famous moment is when they face the powerful demon, the Lady White Bone. She tricks Tang Sanzang three times. Sun Wukong sees through her tricks and kills her, but Tang Sanzang misunderstands and punishes Wukong. Later, the truth is discovered, and Wukong is forgiven. This moment teaches them that trust is very important in a team. In the end, after many difficulties, they reach the West and successfully get the scriptures.
