Last summer vacation, I joined a summer camp organized by my school. The camp was held at Green Valley, 50 kilometers away from the city, and lasted a full week. Every morning, we woke up at 7:00 a.m., went for a jog, and then worked in groups on tasks, like setting up tents and making simple tools. The most fun part was the campfire party on the third evening, we sat around the fire, sang and danced, and shared stories. Though the daytime activities were tiring, I learned teamwork and made three new friends. On the final day, the teachers took us to a nearby nature park, where they explained facts about local plants and animals. This experience made me realized the importance of protecting the environment and deepened my love for outdoor activities.

The Slippery Slope Argument
Have you heard of the slippery slope argument?
Let’s explore it together.
• ________
The slippery slope argument is a way of reasoning (推理). It means that one small first action will cause a series of events, finally leading to a very bad result.
• Type
* The causal slippery slope
One action directly causes the next result.
* The precedent slippery slope
Breaking a small rule leads to more rule-breaking.
* The concept slippery slope
Unclear standards slowly turn into the worst result.
• Everyday use
In daily life, slippery slope arguments are everywhere, such as family talks and school discussions. Parents may say, “If you watch TV one more hour tonight, you will become lazy and never reach your goals.” At school, some students say, “If the school cancels one rule, all rules will be useless, and the school will be in a mess.”
• Value of the study
Scientists now study why people are easily influenced by this reasoning. They find that the fear of bad results makes it easier for people to believe it may happen. In law and education, experts use these studies to help people think in a clear way and avoid being misled (误导) by wrong logic (逻辑).
16.Which of the following words can be put in “________”?
A.Example B.Meaning C.Advantage D.History
17.What can we know about the slippery slope argument from the passage?
A.It mainly includes four different types. B.It can hardly be found in people’s lives.
C.It is closely connected with strict rules. D.It is used to help people to think clearly.
18.Where might this passage be found?
A.In a science magazine. B.In a shopping ad.
C.In a school news report. D.In a travel guide.
【答案】16.B 17.D 18.A

Georgia, who works for a popular fashion store in the UK named Bows Boutique, left her purse at a gas station after her company party in early December. She was heartbroken, but thinking someone must have taken it away, she gave up the idea of going back to look for it and didn’t phone the station to ask about it. But her tears quickly dried when an off-duty firefighter named Nyma showed up at her door.
A ring camera caught Georgia and Nyma’s exchange, and the owner of Bows Boutique posted the video on the store’s Instagram page. In it, Nyma rang her doorbell and Georgia answered it using a phone app. Nyma explained where he found the lost purse and said he decided to drive straight to her house so she wouldn’t have to experience an extra moment of panic.
Georgia was moved to tears and kept offering to send Nyma money for his good deed, but he refused. He simply asked her to pay it forward, and explained that it was no trouble for him though Georgia knew he needed to drive hours to her house. Because she wasn’t home at the time, he left the purse in an empty garbage bag and left.
The owner and Georgia were so touched by the gesture, and they started a search for the mystery man so they could give him a proper “thank you”. It didn’t take long to find him. They invited him to the store for an official meet — and he went. “He is such a kind man,” reads another post. “It was a pleasure to meet him. The video has got millions of views and we hope he will be a positive influence on many.”
19.Why didn’t Georgia go back to look for her purse or call the gas station?
A.She had no time to go back.
B.She thought someone had taken it away.
C.She didn’t remember where she left it.
D.She didn’t care about her purse.
20.What does the underlined phrase “pay it forward” in paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.Pay for the gas fee. B.Give money to others.
C.Return the purse in time. D.Pass kindness to others.
21.Which of the following is the correct order of the story?
a. Nyma drove to Georgia’s house.
b. Georgia left her purse at a gas station.
c. The store posted the video online and searched for Nyma.
d. Nyma found Georgia’s lost purse.
e. Georgia attended her company party.
A.ebdac B.dbace C.ebadc D.bdcae
22.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Georgia was at home when Nyma arrived.
B.The video on Instagram made Nyma famous.
C.Nyma found Georgia’s address by contacting the police.
D.The owner of Bows Boutique will give Nyma a big present.
【答案】19.B 20.D 21.A 22.B
19.第一段指出:“thinking someone must have taken it away, she gave up the idea of going back to look for it and didn’t phone the station to ask about it”,说明她以为钱包被人拿走了。
22.最后一段提到:“The video has got millions of views”,可推断视频让Nyma受到广泛关注。
C
Humpback whales are large animals that live in the ocean. They like to spend their summers eating food in cold waters and then travel to warm areas in winter to give birth to their babies. These warm areas provide the right temperature for the whales and their babies. The warm waters are mostly free of animals that hunt whales, and are more comfortable for the baby whales that do not have much fat yet.
The Earth is getting warmer because of things people do, like driving cars, cutting down trees and running factories. This warming makes the ocean hotter, too. Baby whales are born in water that is between 21℃ and 28℃ (like a nice warm bath), which helps them to grow and gain weight rapidly. But if the ocean gets hotter than this, the whales might have to move away. It will bring trouble to humpback whales because they have certain favourite places where they like to return every year.
Humpback whales have an impact on the health of the ocean. When whales swim, they mix up the water, helping tiny plants to grow. These plants play a key role in the food chain and help produce oxygen. They feed lots of other ocean animals and make some of the oxygen we breathe. Also, when whales die and go down to the bottom of the ocean, they help trap carbon (吸收碳). This keeps the planet cooler. If the ocean becomes too warm, it will change how sea life survives and finds food.
Whale watching provides jobs for boat operators, tour guides and even scientists who help educate the public. This industry supports businesses, such as restaurants and hotels in many coastal towns. For example, in places like Hawaii, whale watching is a major tourist attraction that helps communities’ development.
23.Why do humpback whales travel to warm areas in winter?
A.To have their babies. B.To find plenty of food.
C.To mix up the water. D.To attack other ocean animals.
24.What will happen if the ocean temperature stays above 28℃?
A.The baby whales will grow better.
B.The whales will lose weight quickly.
C.The whales may be forced to run away.
D.More tiny plants will grow in the ocean.
25.What does “impact” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.A gentle touch or push.
B.The speed of a moving object.
C.The sound made by a falling object.
D.The powerful influence on something.
26.What will the writer probably talk about after the last paragraph?
A.Why the ocean is getting warmer.
B.Why humpback whales are in trouble.
C.How we can protect humpback whales.
D.How humpback whales influence the ocean.
【答案】23.A 24.C 25.D 26.C
23.第一段说明原因:“then travel to warm areas in winter to give birth to their babies”,直接表明座头鲸冬季前往温暖海域是为了繁衍后代。
24.第二段指出结果:“But if the ocean gets hotter than this, the whales might have to move away”,其中“this”指代前文提到的21℃至28℃,说明若海洋温度持续高于28℃,座头鲸可能会被迫离开。
D
①Chinese scientists have made a very cool robot—GEAIR. It’s the first robot in the world that can help grow plants all by itself. This robot shows how smart technology and plant science can work together to make farming better.
②GEAIR works in greenhouses. Imagine a robot walking among plants, looking at flowers with its “eyes”, which are really cameras. When it sees a flower, it uses its robot arms to do something called pollination (授粉)—that’s like helping plants have “babies” to make new crops. Before GEAIR, farmers had to do this by hand, which took a lot of time. But now, GEAIR can do it quickly and carefully, just like a super-fast gardener!
③Farmers want crops that are strong, healthy, and productive. This is called hybrid breeding (杂交育种), where scientists mix different plants to make the best ones. But doing this by hand is hard work. GEAIR makes it easier. For example, in soybeans, the robot can help create special plants that make more beans. This could help feed more people and save farmers time and money.
④Scientists hope GEAIR will help make crops that can stand up to bad weather. This way, even if the climate changes, we can still grow enough food. What’s more, GEAIR is helping China lead the way in smart farming. Maybe one day, robots like GEAIR will be in greenhouses all over the world.
⑤In the past, scenes of robots helping plants were only in science fiction movies. But now, GEAIR has made that dream real. It shows that when we use science and technology, we can solve big problems.
27.What can we learn about GEAIR from the first paragraph?
A.It can help make farming better. B.It is used to show smart technology.
C.It was made by Chinese farmers. D.It can grow plants well without plant science.
28.What do Paragraphs 2 and 3 mainly talk about GEAIR?
A.Its future development. B.Its working abilities and uses.
C.Its importance in bad weather. D.Its differences from other robots.
29.What can we infer from the text?
A.Smart farming is widely used all over the world.
B.People have solved most climate change problems.
C.Farmers will no longer need to work in greenhouses.
D.GEAIR may have a good influence on food production.
30.How is the text organized? (①= Paragraph 1 ②= Paragraph 2,…)
A. B. C. D.
【答案】27.A 28.B 29.D 30.B

29.第三段提到“GEAIR can help create special plants that make more beans. This could help feed more people”,第四段也提到“even if the climate changes, we can still grow enough food”,由此可推断,GEAIR可能会对粮食生产产生良好的影响。

Last month some parents visited a pizza restaurant in Florida with their children. On the door, they saw a sign in capital letters: “NO CHILDREN”, “Why can’t we bring 36 children?” “What on earth does the owner want to do?” The parents were surprised and complained 37 .
So why did the restaurant put up the sign 38 its door?
The owner of the pizza restaurant found that many parents couldn’t 39 their children and many children couldn’t have meals quietly, so they disturbed (打扰) other customers badly. Therefore, he made up his mind to 40 children from entering his restaurant.
Some people said that it was not 41 for the children. The owner explained his decision. He said that the restaurant was near a busy road, some parents didn’t 42 their children well and some dangers had ever happened. To 43 things from getting worse, the owner finally stuck to his decision.
Others agreed with his 44 . They said they were tired of noisy children in restaurants and now they could finally have a quiet place without kids. They believed that a quiet dining environment is something that every customer could 45 .
In fact, many other restaurants have also met the same 46 . Some have done nothing and others have tried not to allow children to enter during certain times of the day. There’s one restaurant in Italy. In order to encourage children to get into the good 47 of eating, they give family meal discounts (折扣) to the children who eat the food quietly and politely. What’s more, they also prepare small gifts like candies and toys for well-behaved kids to 48 their good behavior.
These methods may be 49 for a while, but it is difficult to solve this problem completely. Maybe we need to find a better way to 50 the needs of children and adults in public places in the future. After all, a restaurant should be a place where people of all ages can feel comfortable and respected.

“put up a sign on the door”意为“把告示贴在门上”,“on”表示在物体表面上。B项“up”与“put up”重复且不能接“its door”表位置;C项“away”(远离)和D项“off”(离开)均不符合。
根据后文“so they disturbed other customers badly”可知,这里应该是父母无法控制孩子才会打扰到其他人,“control”意为“控制、管束”。
根据前文“so they disturbed other customers badly”可知,老板为了解决孩子打扰顾客这个问题,决心阻止儿童进入餐厅,“stop sb. from doing”是固定搭配,意为阻止某人做某事。
根据后文“The owner explained his decision.”
根据后文“some dangers ever happened.” B项“bring up”(抚养)侧重成长教育;C项“give up”(放弃)和D项“worry about”(担心)均不符合此处“未能看管好”的语境。
A项“promise”(承诺);B项“practice”(练习);D项“provide”(提供)均不能与“from”构成此意。
根据上文“Some people said that it was not...for the children.”
根据前文“many other restaurants have also met the same...”
后文提到给家庭用餐折扣,应该是给有好的用餐习惯孩子的奖励,“get into the good habit of...”

The Slippery Slope Argument
Have you heard of the slippery slope argument?
Let’s explore it together.
• ________
The slippery slope argument is a way of reasoning (推理). It means that one small first action will cause a series of events, finally leading to a very bad result.
• Type
* The causal slippery slope
One action directly causes the next result.
* The precedent slippery slope
Breaking a small rule leads to more rule-breaking.
* The concept slippery slope

The video has got millions of views and we hope he will be a positive influence on many.”

d. Nyma found Georgia’s lost purse.
e. Georgia attended her company party.
A.ebdac B.dbace C.ebadc D.bdcae

A. B. C. D.
