A
The earth’s climate depends a lot on its geographical features (特征). Mountains, oceans, deserts, and even the height of the land can change the weather around us. Geography works like a huge map, deciding whether a place is hot, cold, wet, or dry.
High mountains often create their own weather. For example, when warm, wet air climbs mountains, it rises and cools, creating heavy rainfall on one side. At the same time, the other side stays dry, making a “rain shadow (a dry area behind the mountains)”. This is why some valleys (山谷) are green, while nearby areas look like deserts.
How far a place is from the sea also matters. Coastal (海边的) areas usually have comfortable temperatures because the ocean takes in heat in summer and gives it out in winter. Places far from the sea face hotter summers and colder winters. Latitude (纬度) plays a role too—— places near the equator (赤道) receive more direct sunlight, making them warmer all year round.
Altitude (海拔) changes temperature as well. Even near the equator, high mountains have snow on their tops. This happens because the temperature falls by about 6℃ for every 1,000 meters you go higher. This explains why people living in high-altitude villages wear thick clothes even in warm areas.
Understanding geography helps us predict the weather and prepare for natural challenges. From farming to building cities, this knowledge shapes human life deeply.

Banjo
Rudy heard a noise coming from the old log at the bottom of the garden. “It sounds like an animal in trouble,” he thought. Rudy squeezed under the fence and pushed his way through the long grass. There, inside an old log, Rudy saw a puppy curled up and crying like a baby. “Its mother left it,” thought Rudy. “It’s an orphan.”
Rudy looked at the puppy. He wanted a dog but his mum said, “No way!” Rudy knew, though, that he couldn’t look after a dog himself. He needed help, and his friend Jacob who lived over the road would be perfect.
One day, when Rudy and Jacob went to see Banjo, he was lying still in the old log. “He has a thorn (刺) in his foot,” said Rudy. “We’ll have to take him into the house.” Rudy made a bed for Banjo in his cupboard. Every time Banjo cried in the night, Rudy washed his foot. The next day, the foot was better and Banjo was frisky again.
One day, when Rudy got home from school, his mother said, “Rudy, a wolf cub came into the house today! It went into your bedroom and curled up in your cupboard.”
Rudy felt surprised very much: Banjo was a wolf!
“What did you do?” he asked slowly. “The wildlife rescue people came and took it away” said his mum. “They told me they never saw an orphan cub that looked after itself so well.”
Rudy called Jacob and they rushed to the old log. Banjo was gone. They sat on the old log and thought about Banjo. “He was a wolf all the time,” said Rudy. “We never could keep him.” “He’ll be happier back in the wild where he belongs,” said Jacob.

A
The earth’s climate depends a lot on its geographical features (特征).
36.According to the passage, what greatly influences the earth’s climate ? (only one word)(1分)

Rudy and Jacob carved BANJO on the old log. And in the old log there was always a bone, just in case Banjo should ever come to visit.
