I. Grammar and Vocabulary (每题1分;共20分)
Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Be yourself — everyone else is taken
In one of my favorite studies on the meaning in life, students were divided into three groups: one wrote about their “true self,” another about their “everyday self,” and the third about the campus bookstore. They then rated their sense of life meaning.
The researchers were interested in 1 detail the participants provided in their various essays, their assumption being that the more detailed a description one provides about one’s true self, the more likely one is 2 (get) authentically in touch with that sense of self. Not surprisingly, for those who wrote about their everyday self or the campus bookstore, the level of detail showed no relation to their sense of life meaning. Yet among those who wrote about their true selves, greater essay detail correlated with a stronger experience of life meaning.
The empirical (实证) research backs up 3 philosophers proposed decades ago: There is great value in being able to live authentically and with oneself, and such self-actualization can make our lives feel truly worth 4 (live). As the late philosopher Lawrence Becker proclaimed, “Autonomous human lives have a dignity that is immeasurable, incommensurable, infinite, beyond price.”
This theoretical insight is backed up by recent empirical research in self-determination theory, which has argued forcefully that autonomy is a fundamental human need, the satisfaction of 5 is important for our psychological growth, integrity and well-being. As our body needs food and water for its wellness and health, so our mind needs a few basic psychosocial experiences for its wellness and health — and among these needs, autonomy stands tall.
6 the need for autonomy is built into the human motivational system, it is no wonder that we find something inherently worthy and 7 (fulfill) in being able to live authentically. Basic psychological needs provide a robust foundation for where to find meaning in life. And what 8 (apply) to whole lives is true also for individual tasks. In my studies, I have shown how having autonomy at work is one of the key qualities that makes work meaningful.
While much of life’s meaning derives from human connection, one cannot truly connect with others 9 first being in touch with oneself; otherwise, it is not the genuine self but a hollow persona (人格面具) that engages with others. Only by understanding one’s identity and origins 10 one begin to relate to others authentically.

The silence of the late afternoon was absolute. I was hiking along a familiar trail in the mountains, enjoying the rare solitude. Then, without warning, it was shattered. A(n) 11 crack ripped through the air, not from the sky, but from the earth itself. The sound was so powerful that it felt less like a noise but more like a physical force pressing against my chest.
I froze, my heart pounding against my ribs. For a terrifying second, I thought it was a(n) 12 . My mind raced through impossible scenarios — a hidden military exercise, a meteor strike. The ground beneath my feet trembled, and a cloud of dust rose from further up the ridge, staining the clear blue sky. The initial shock was so immense that it took me a moment to process what my eyes were seeing: a section of the old cliff face was beginning to 13 .
Rocks, some the size of cars, broke away and tumbled down the mountainside in a deadly avalanche. The sight was horrifying. I was too far away to be in danger, but close enough to feel the raw, destructive power of nature. It was a stark reminder of how suddenly the world can change. After what felt like a century, the rumbling stopped, and a terrible quietness returned, 14 different from the peace that had existed just minutes before.
As the dust began to settle, I realized I was probably the only person who had witnessed this event. I was, in a very literal sense, on the 15 . My first instinct was to check my phone. Miraculously, I had a single bar of signal. I knew I had to report what I had seen. It took a 16 of attempts — perhaps five or six — before the call finally went through to the park ranger station. My voice shook as I described the location and the scale of the rockfall.
The ranger on the other end remained calm and professional. He assured me that the area was remote and that no hikers were likely to have been in that specific zone. He thanked me for the report, saying it would help them 17 visitors to avoid the area until it could be assessed for safety. Knowing that my quick action might prevent an accident was a small comfort. Hanging up, I felt the adrenaline (肾上腺素) slowly drain from my body, leaving me feeling weak but 18 grateful. Grateful for the safe distance, for the faint signal, and for the perspective the experience had given me.
As I made my way back down the trail, I thought about how this moment of chaos would eventually become a story that would 19 my friends and family. The sheer improbability of it all — being in the right (or wrong) place at the perfect time — was something I would never forget. What began as a terrifying encounter with nature’s 20 would, in time, become an unforgettable tale of survival and gratitude.
II. Reading Comprehension (21 – 35题,每题1分;36 – 50题,每题2分;共45分)
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Stay out of the Sun to Look Young
Forget drinking countless glasses of water or getting your beauty sleep. The secret of looking young is simply to stay out of the sun. A study of hundreds of women has revealed that those who avoided the sun’s rays looked-up to 20 years younger than they actually are.
However, other supposed rules for a youthful complexion (肤色), from drinking lots of water to sleeping well and exercising regularly, failed to 21 the hands of time. Only keeping out of the sun, and wearing sunscreen when this wasn’t possible, made a 22 , the American Academy of Dermatology’s annual conference will hear today. The interesting 23 comes from a study of 231 women of all ages who were quizzed about their lives, including whether they were sun-lovers. When researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital in the US — commissioned by skincare firm Olay — guessed how old the women were, they found those who 24 in the sun tended to have aged more slowly. A lucky four had so few wrinkles and 25 spots, and such a fresh complexion, that they appeared to be a full two decades younger than they really were.
Researcher Dr Alexa Kimball, a professor of dermatology (皮肤医学), said the 26 advice that we drink lots of water to stay healthy is actually a myth, and the body is “pretty good” at judging how much we need.
Previous research by the British Nutrition Foundation reached a 27 conclusion. Experts there said: “Just drinking water for the sake of drinking water really has no effect on improving the appearance of skin.” It isn’t clear why the women who 28 well didn’t have younger-looking skin. But it may be that the question they were asked was too 29 and didn’t take into account their long-term sleep patterns.
A second study, also by Olay, suggested that low-level day to day exposure to the sun is more aging than 30 intense exposure. Finally, DNA examination of tiny samples of the women’s skin helped understand the 31 done by the sun. A gene called CDKN2A was more active in facial skin that is exposed to the elements than in samples taken from the bottoms. This gene was also more active in women who said they loved the 32 and in those who looked older. Dr Kimball said CDKN2A activity is a 33 that a cell is “tired out” and urged women should protect their skin year round and not just when on a beach holiday.
Dr Frauke Neuser, principal scientist at Olay, which has used the 34 to develop its latest face creams, said: “This research gives us a detailed picture of the effect of sun exposure on skin ageing and illustrate the importance of protection on a 35 basis.”

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
My grandmother loved baking and was, therefore, an excellent baker. I can still see her massaging flour, sugar, eggs, yeast, butter and milk into dough and injecting the pastry with jam to make buchteln. I can still hear her saying to her, a sustainable farmer, baking was the closest she could get to “the world of art”. I regret never telling her that even though she wasn’t graced with the life of an artist, she was nevertheless weaving something larger than her: a culture.
Maybe she understood what she was doing after all. Once, she instructed me to never follow her recipes, but instead to adapt them however I saw fit. A culture, she was essentially saying, should be modified in line with the tastes and needs of the times.
Well. I have altered most of my grandmother’s recipes, apart from the one—her recipe for potica, a traditional Slovenian pastry usually served at holiday, birthday and special celebrations. In essence, it is a roll made of leavened paper-thin dough, most often stuffed with walnut filling and raisins.
Calling potica a “filled roll”, makes it seem easy to prepare, but it requires hours of work. The most painful part is grinding the walnuts. Before my grandmother began using a grinder, we filled a bag with walnuts and beat the bag with a hammer, until the nuts turned to paste.
Ah, but why not simply buy a kilo of ground Californian walnuts? Oh! Because the secret to the best potica known to humans is walnuts from a tree that grows on my grandmother’s farm. This 15-meter-tall tree is an amusement park for crows and insects, and is also often populated by courageous children. It bears sweetest walnuts.
Was, bore, I should write. In the past decade, the 30-year-old tree has changed. At first, the romantic in me wanted to believe it was mourning my grandmother’s death and just couldn’t yield sweet nuts any more. Next, I turned to common sense. Walnut harvests, I told myself, differ from season to season, so our half-empty baskets was nothing to worry about. However, after the fifth poor harvest with dry, bitter fruit, I understood that I was witnessing something better known as decay.
In suitable conditions, walnut trees in our region can live up to 100 years and yield nuts until they’re middle-aged. But the circumstances for that particular potica tree have worsened. The trees endure frost and snow, heat and strong winds, storms and floods, and heavily polluted air, water, soil.
Well, I spotted a sign of hope for poticas early this year. A sapling next to the dying tree. Perhaps the dying tree delivered all its remaining nutrients to this sapling, whispering: “The preservationists are already here, trust me.”
36.What was the primary reason the grandmother considered baking as close to “the world of art”?
A.The use of unique ingredients. B.The precision required in baking.
C.The therapeutic nature of the baking process. D.The creative and cultural significance of baking.

A.To emphasize the tree’s historical significance on the farm.
B.To showcase the author’s admiration for the tree’s longevity.
C.To indicate a transition from past to present in the tree’s state.
D.To highlight the author’s uncertainty about the tree’s current condition.
39.How did the author feel according to the last paragraph?
A.Sad at the decay of the walnut tree.
B.Hopeful about the future of the walnut tree.
C.Indifferent to the changes in the walnut tree.
D.Unpleased with the new sapling next to the dying tree.

Should Teenagers Be Banned from Social Media?
Debates over restricting teenagers’ access to social media often begin with an apparent contradiction. On the one hand, young people possess free-speech rights, and social media has become the most visible arena for public expression. On the other, there is growing consensus that social media causes real harm, particularly to children. The unresolved question, then, is not whether social media is damaging, but how far a society committed to free expression should go in limiting access to it in the name of protection.
Earlier attempts to resolve this tension, such as Utah’s proposed age-verification law, revealed the difficulty of translating parental concern into policy without overreaching. Requiring government identification to access social platforms risked excluding not only minors but also adults lacking official documents, effectively narrowing participation in the digital public square. Civil-libertarian objections framed such measures as unacceptable intrusions on free expression, and for a time, that argument appeared decisive.
Australia’s recent Online Safety Amendment Act represents a more forceful intervention. To participate in digital life, Australian citizens may now have to submit a fairly onerous series of age verifications. By effectively banning children under sixteen from major social-media platforms and imposing staggering fines on noncompliant companies, the law shifts responsibility from families to the state. Yet public reaction to the law reveals a paradox. Although a large majority of adults support the ban, many doubt its effectiveness, and even fewer parents intend to enforce it strictly at home. Early reports suggest that children are already finding ways to circumvent age-verification systems, highlighting the limits of technological enforcement.
What seems most likely is not total compliance but a partial cultural shift. The law may function less as an airtight prohibition than as a signal of changing norms. We are currently witnessing a “politics of attention” where society can no longer remain neutral on what it means to live a digital life well. Increasingly, technology is seen as a powerful force that shapes attention, behavior, and values, often in ways misaligned with human well-being. This development is also reflected in what might be called a “quiet revolution” — not simply a change in policy, but a deeper moral realignment. This quiet revolution is already visible in school districts across the U.S. that have banned smartphones from classrooms. The growing suspicion toward smartphones and social platforms thus signals the emergence of a new national morality, one that questions whether constant connectivity truly serves a good life.
Crucially, this moral shift is not limited to concerns about children. Anxiety over teenagers’ phone use masks a broader unease with adult lives that have become fragmented, relentlessly scheduled, and dominated by digital demands. A truly flourishing digital life requires a shift in norms for adults as well as children. If society cannot move away from private technology companies that incentivize cheap engagement, any rules dictated for the next generation will remain compromised. The challenge lies in rediscovering what to do with our newfound, offline time.
43.According to the passage, what was a major concern regarding Utah’s proposed age-verification law?
A.It would have failed to reduce teenagers’ use of social media in practice.
B.It risked restricting access to online expression for adults as well as minors.
C.It placed excessive financial pressure on social-media companies.
D.It conflicted with parental authority by transferring decision-making power to the state.
44.What paradox surrounding Australia’s Online Safety Amendment Act does the author highlight?
A.The law enjoys political support but faces opposition from technology companies.
B.Public approval of the law exists alongside doubts about its real-world enforcement.
C.Parents support the law in principle but find it hard to enforce it at home.
D.The law’s strict design contrasts with the ease of bypassing them by minors.
45.Which of the following best explains what the author means by the “quiet revolution” in the fourth paragraph?
A.A gradual tightening of government regulations that aims to strictly control teenagers’ access to digital technology.
B.A temporary reaction to smartphone overuse that will fade with the adaptation to new digital norms.
C.A public backlash driven mainly by schools and parents against the economic power of tech companies.
D.A widespread shift in social values that redefines how technology should be used in everyday life.
46.What position is the author most likely to take on current efforts to restrict teenagers’ access to social media?
A.They are meaningful mainly as part of a broader shift in social norms, especially when accompanied by changes in adult behavior.
B.They function primarily as policy instruments intended to weaken the commercial dominance of technology companies over public attention.
C.They largely reflect short-term public concern and moral unease, with limited potential to reshape long-term social values.
D.They are best understood as measures that should rely more on parental guidance and household rules than on institutional intervention.
Section C
Directions: Read the following passages. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
How charismatic are you?
People often think of charisma (个人魅力) as a gift some have and others don’t. I’ve tried to dismiss that idea with a steady stream of research and advice showing charm is a skill you can develop.
Over the years, I’ve shared tips from everyone from FBI agents to actors on how to tune up your charisma and win over others. 47 A new study recently published in Leadership Quarterly and written by its authors for the Harvard Business Review website changed that.
The researchers first rounded up a group of college students and asked them to fill out a questionnaire to determine if they’re larks or night owls. Then 131 of these participants did a role play in which they pretended to speak at a graduation ceremony. 48
How did the timing of the speeches affect the students’ charisma? When the researchers had independent evaluators rate the charisma of the speakers, they found that larks gave more inspirational speeches in the morning session and owls gave more inspirational speeches in the midnight session.
49 The researchers showed half-asleep listeners are far harder to charm — surprising no one who has ever tried to deliver an early morning lecture to college kids. Or, as the authors put it, “The passionate speeches of leaders are less effective when followers are tired and just do not want to hear it.”
50 But what should you do if you and your followers’ biological clocks don’t match? If you’re half alive at 7 a.m. and they’re bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, whose state of mind should weigh heavier in the scheduling scales?
“Typically, a good approach is to avoid extremely early or late times, likely settling for roughly the middle of the day,” suggest the authors, though they add that “the exact time of day you select, of course, should be driven by your context.”
A.Translating the finding into real-life action is easy if you are an early bird leading early birds.
B.To be more specific, charisma isn’t just about your talent and skills; it’s also about timing.
C.In a follow-up study, the team found that timing also plays a role in how listeners perceived the speeches.
D.But there’s one factor that you can consciously use to boost your likability that I’ve never considered — time of day.
E.The twist was that some of these speeches were given at the eye-wateringly early hour, and others at midnight.
F.An experienced speaker surely knows how to work on his message and delivery to charm the sleepy audience.
III. Summary Writing (10分)
51.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Inside the NFL Football Factory
Cheering for your football team as they throw a long pass is a classic American tradition that started in the late 1800s. Today’s footballs, often called “pigskins,” are no longer made from pig bladders. They are made from cowhide leather with rubber inside. Even though the materials have changed, the shape and size of NFL footballs have stayed the same for over 100 years.
Dr. Rabindra Mehta, a former NASA scientist, explains that a football is designed to be more aerodynamic than a baseball. Footballs are made from four pieces of leather, shaped like leaves and sewn together inside out. The leather is then steamed to make it soft enough to turn right-side out. An air bladder is inserted, and the football is laced by hand.
A football isn’t a perfect sphere (球体) but a prolate spheroid, which means it’s oval-shaped with pointed ends. This shape makes it easier to grasp and helps the ball travel longer distances. The surface of the football, including the texture of the leather, the stitching, and the laces, helps the air flow stay attached longer, reducing drag compared to a round object like a baseball.
When a baseball flies through the air, the air bends around it, creating drag that slows it down. Golf balls have dimples on their surface to reduce drag. Similarly, the textured surface and curved shape of a football help create a turbulent (湍流的) layer of air around it, allowing air to stay attached longer and reducing drag.
MIT professor Anette Hosoi says it’s hard to predict drag on objects like footballs. Drag depends on the shape of the air behind the ball, which changes with the ball’s position, speed, and surface texture. Air temperature also affects drag; warmer air is less dense, so footballs may fly farther on warmer days.
A football thrown with a tight spiral (螺旋形) is fun to watch. The spin of the ball stays aligned with the direction it’s moving, just like a bullet. This skill is what makes quarterbacks so impressive.

37.What did the grandmother advise the author regarding her recipes?
A.To strictly follow the recipes as they were.
B.To adapt the recipes according to personal taste.
C.To share the recipes with others in their original form.
D.To learn traditional recipes from other cultures instead.
38.Why were the bold words “Was, bore” underlined in the passage?

【答案】43.B 44.B 45.D 46.A
根据第二段“Requiring government identification to access social platforms risked excluding not only minors but also adults lacking official documents, effectively narrowing participation in the digital public square.(要求使用政府身份证明来访问社交平台,不仅可能将未成年人排除在外,还可能排除那些没有官方文件的成年人,从而实际上缩小了数字公共领域的参与范围)”可知,犹他州提议的年龄验证法主要问题在于它可能会限制成年人以及未成年人的在线表达机会。故选B项。
44.细节理解题。根据第三段“Yet public reaction to the law reveals a paradox. Although a large majority of adults support the ban, many doubt its effectiveness, and even fewer parents intend to enforce it strictly at home.(然而,公众对该法律的反应揭示了一个矛盾。尽管绝大多数成年人支持这项禁令,但许多人怀疑其有效性,打算在家中严格执行的父母更是少之又少)”可知,澳大利亚《在线安全修正案》的矛盾之处在于公众对该法律存在支持,但同时又对其在现实中的执行存在怀疑。故选B项。
45.推理判断题。根据第四段“This development is also reflected in what might be called a “quiet revolution”— not simply a change in policy, but a deeper moral realignment. This quiet revolution is already visible in school districts across the U.S. that have banned smartphones from classrooms. The growing suspicion toward smartphones and social platforms thus signals the emergence of a new national morality, one that questions whether constant connectivity truly serves a good life.(这种发展也体现在一种所谓的“安静革命”中——这不仅仅是政策的改变,更是一种更深层次的道德调整。这种“安静革命”已经在美国各地禁止智能手机进入教室的学区中显现出来。对智能手机和社交平台日益增长的怀疑表明一种新的国民道德正在出现,这种道德质疑持续连接是否真的有助于过上美好生活)”可知,“安静革命”指的是一种广泛的社会价值观转变,重新定义了日常生活中应如何使用技术。故选D项。
46.推理判断题。根据最后一段“A truly flourishing digital life requires a shift in norms for adults as well as children.(真正丰富多彩的数字生活,既需要儿童,也需要成年人转变行为规范。)”以及第四段“What seems most likely is not total compliance but a partial cultural shift. The law may function less as an airtight prohibition than as a signal of changing norms. We are currently witnessing a “politics of attention” where society can no longer remain neutral on what it means to live a digital life well. Increasingly, technology is seen as a powerful force that shapes attention, behavior, and values, often in ways misaligned with human well-being.(最有可能出现的并非完全的遵守,而是一种部分的文化转变。 故选A项。

【答案】
A Moment That Ignites the Spirit of Teamwork
I’m Li Hua, and I’d like to share a photo taken on the school sports day last year. In the picture, my classmates and I are cheering for our relay team members, who are running fiercely on the track with sweat on their faces.
I chose this photo because it reminds me of the power of teamwork. When our relay team fell behind, none of us gave up. We shouted loudly to encourage each other, and finally, we won the third place. This experience taught me that success comes from trust and support, which I’ll never forget.
Looking ahead, I hope to carry this spirit into university. I believe I can overcome challenges by working with others, just as we did in high school. Whether in study groups or club activities, I’ll always value every partnership. I’m excited about the new journey and ready to create more meaningful memories.
