While traditional manufacturers slowly add semiautomatics features, Tesla, a relatively young auto-manufacturer, is taking an approach 1 seems more aggressive. Last year, an update to the software in one of its models added the ability to operate 2 “auto-pilot”: The car mostly drives itself, but the driver can take over if, for example, the car attempts to exit the freeway by itself — as it did during some runs soon after 3 (introduce) last year. Each time a driver intervenes (干预), Tesla registers the correction in its software, which 4 (share) with all the other cars. The idea is 5 over time, the cars will get better at driving.
Tesla’s autopilot occupies a regulatory gray area, since updates to a car’s software 6 (not require) the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s approval — though that could change as the agency rules catch up with technology. Ford or GM would likely never have put a system never 7 (test) before into service. However, Tesla’s tech-forward customers seem willing to take the risk, 8 those of us who have to share the road with them would rather they didn’t.
A couple of years ago, Tesla updated its software again to add a way to “summon (召唤)” your car. The car can turn 9 on, open the garage door, and meet you in the driveway like an automotive butler. For now, the feature is meant 10 (use) only on private property, but Tesla promises Knight Rider-style summoning in the future: Your car will greet you at the airport when you return from a trip or read your calendar and know where to pick you up after a meeting downtown.

It began with a case of homesickness. Missing his family’s olive gardens in Baasir, Samir left his engineering job abroad and returned to Lebanon. Farming had long been family 11 , and he aimed to revive it — and Lebanon’s fading olive-oil industry, which 12 its roots all the way back to ancient times. He later launched Genco Olive Oil, his own company.
He is not alone. A short drive from Baasir lives Walid, who managed to convert wheat fields into olive groves in 2010, and his company now grows Italian varieties. In the mountains, Perini 13 another variety, Souri, on her 14 family’s land and calls her hometown the “Bordeaux (法国城市波尔多) of olive oil”. Unfortunately, they all face the same challenge. Although olive oil once 15 Lebanese cooking, many households have replaced it with imported vegetable oil, which recently became quite cheap thanks to the 16 Lebanese pound. At the same time, many smallholder farmers have let the quality of their product decline, causing consumption to fall to just a tenth of what the average Spaniard consumes.
The economic crisis makes things worse. The country produces little, so nearly everything, from bottles to fertilizers, must be imported using dollars. As the Lebanese pounds plunge in value, prices rises and dollars becomes scarce. There is also a shortage of fuel, which will be needed to run machines that press olives for oil once the annual harvests 17 . And then there is the pandemic, which delivered a severe 18 to restaurants, major buyers of extra-virgin olive oil. But Lebanese producers have their 19 set on the global market and believe they can rival those leading manufacturers from Spain and Italy in terms of quality, if not 20 . Their labels have won numerous awards, which helps Lebanese olive oil gradually win loyal international customers.

Section A (15分)

Try Paper-Based Crafting to Cut Through Overthinking
Since being diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder as a teenager, I’ve turned to medication, talking therapy, and exercise to alleviate my symptoms. Still, I often find it hard to “switch off”, and stop 21 thoughts.
But, recently, I discovered a new tool to slice through my anxiety. In a collage (拼贴画) workshop, I cut images from magazines, and pasted them on to paper. Playing around with pictures, scissors, and glue, I was transported back to more creative childhood days—and experienced a deep sense of 22 .
23 drawing or painting, there’s no certain level of artistic skill required for a collage, while the pressure to make something ‘perfect’ is removed. By remixing readymade visuals, I was able to 24 the voice of my inner critic, and feel a different kind of creative freedom.
Alongside the simple joy of cutting and arranging images, I learned that the final 25 can be meaningful, too. According to artist and teacher Hazel Pit, we mentally store certain past images in our minds—and collage allows us to access them. “With its endless possibilities, collage really is an ideal tool for accessing the unconscious mind, and expressing yourself,” she says.
Hazel’s students have been surprised by the emotions reflected back to them in their compositions. As she explains: “Collage can act as a 26 conduit (渠道,通道) for the inner self,” and anyone can experience its benefits by following these steps.
Grab your tools
Gather visually-rich materials, including magazines and newspapers, leaflets, old books, vintage postcards, and photographs. Searching for forgotten pictures can 27 new ideas and emotional revelations. You will also need glue and a pair of 28 . For the background, choose paper or card that suits your personal style, from a piece of white A5 to a leftover delivery box. Work with what you have!
Follow your intuition
Pick out your images 29 . “Don’t overthink it, or hold the end product in mind,” says Hazel. Drawing on psychotherapist Carl Jung’s theories about images as metaphors in healing, she advises: “Only choose something that resonates with you, sparking an emotional reaction, as this will give your collage substance.”
You might be 30 to certain colours, textures, or details, as well as figures, words, or scenes. At this stage, tear out the pages which feature appealing pictures, and place them in a pile.
Cut, slice, and tear
Cut out your chosen images or experiment with tearing with your hands for rougher edges. This repetitive act requires concentration and is soothing. “Cutting will put you in a meditative space,” says Hazel, “as you stop thinking about 31 issues and exist in the present moment.”
Play around with pictures
Arrange, rearrange, and layer your images, testing different combinations. Without constraints, allow your intuition to guide you. This is the most expressive part of the process, so embrace it.
Pin and paste
Once you’re happy with the arrangement, glue it down. Small pins can also help keep your composition in 32 .
Reflect on your collage
Finally, take time to reflect upon your collage. Does the choice and arrangement of pictures hold 33 ? Days later, it may speak to you about feelings or thoughts that you didn’t realize were bubbling beneath the surface.
Generally speaking, collage requires no special 34 skill. The pressure to make something “perfect” gradually disappears. Studies suggest that creative activities like collage can reduce anxiety and strengthen one’s sense of 35 .

(A)
The rock dove, a bird native to Europe and Western Asia, is the ancestor of the common urban pigeon. Settlers introduced rock doves to North America in the 1600s for meat and, over time, these birds escaped domestication and grew well in urban areas.
Cities have a lot to offer pigeons, as tall buildings and window shelves can serve as nesting sites for rock doves. Urban residents provide plenty of food for pigeons either intentionally by feeding pigeons birdseed or bread or unintentionally by leaving out food waste. In addition to human-sourced food, pigeons have a broad diet, including seeds, berries, and insects. Pigeon enthusiasts also set domesticated birds free into the urban environment, where they later bring forth young.
Pigeons’ ability to reproduce year-round leads to highly numerous pigeons in the city, which is an issue for urban wildlife managers. Although pigeons are socially paired, they live in groups of up to 500 birds and this persistent congregation can cause considerable conflicts with people.
To ease conflicts with pigeons, managers have used several methods to prevent pigeon presence or reduce pigeon numbers. Managers have used deadly tools such as poisons. However, this approach typically doesn’t have sustained results because the remaining pigeons multiply rapidly. Further, many poisons are not species-specific and may harm other urban birds. Other programs aimed at reducing nest success involve removing the eggs and replacing them with fake eggs. They often fail because it can be difficult to access nests or attract pigeons to nest houses. Preventing conflicts ultimately relies on removing food sources for urban pigeons. For example, many urban residents feed pigeons in parks. This could be limited through public education campaigns or by carrying out feeding regulations.
36.Which of the following is NOT a reason for the survival of pigeons in urban areas?
A.Pigeon-friendly climate. B.Availability of habitats.
C.Rich food supply. D.Freeing domesticated pigeons.
37.The word “congregation” (paragraph 3) is closest in meaning to ________.
A.introduction B.gathering C.reproduction D.nesting
38.From the sentence “this approach typically...” in the last paragraph, we can infer that the approach ________.
A.needs to be used repeatedly B.is not effective in the long run
C.reduces pigeon numbers greatly D.works when pigeons multiply
39.It can be concluded from the passage that ________.
A.urban pigeons tend to act independently
B.it is difficult for pigeons to adapt to cities
C.stopping feeding pigeons is key to controlling their numbers
D.alternative methods to reduce pigeon numbers are being explored

Five of the Smartest Robots in History
1966
ELIZA
One of the first example of a chatterbot. When running a script labelled with DOCTOR, ELIZA could ask and answer questions like a psychotherapist. It didn’t understand a great deal, but with some clever programming was still able to convince many users of its intelligence.
1994
VIRTUAL CREATURES
Computer artist and researcher Karl Sims created a group of virtual creatures that lived in their own virtual universe. Using genetic algorithms (算法), they evolved until they could swim, crawl, jump and compete against one another. Unfortunately, they were too concerned with their own virtual lives to talk to us.
1997
DEEP BLUE
Deep Blue was thrown into public consciousness when it won a chess game against grandmaster Garry Kasparov — the first supercomputer to make such a great achievement. However, it was given a lot of help from human programmers and used pretty basic AI methods to think of its moves, so maybe it was not so bright after all.
2011
IBM WATSON
IBM Watson was the first AI that beat human players at US TV quiz show Jeopardy!. This AI was clever enough to process text and then found likely answers to the question asked using its internal body of knowledge, which consisted of around 200 million pages of content. Sadly, it struggled to answer some basic questions.
2015
DEEP-Q NETWORK
This earlier work from the team behind AlphaGo, the AI that defeated a master of the complex Japanese strategy game Go, learned how to play 49 classic Atari games just by looking at the screen — it didn’t get any help from programmers. While it was brilliant at a lot of the games, it couldn’t get the hang of Pac-Man.
40.Which pair of robots introduced above were actually unintelligent?
A.ELIZA and DEEP BLUE. B.DEEP BLUE and IBM WATSON.
C.DEEP-Q NETWORK and ELIZA. D.IBM WATSON and DEEP-Q NETWORK.
41.DEEP BLUE and DEEP-Q NETWORK differ from each other in ________.
A.how many methods they can apply B.whether they have the ability to learn
C.whether they have beaten human players D.how they have caught the public attention
42.Which of the following statements is true of VIRTUAL CREATURES?
A.They looked like space creatures.
B.They were unable to respond to people.
C.They could swim as soon as they were created.
D.They led to the application of genetic algorithms.

Parents exhausted by their children may have suspected it all along.
Youngsters have greater energy levels than professional endurance athletes, scientists have discovered, meaning it is virtually impossible for the average adult to keep up. And for mothers and fathers hoping that tiring out their little ones will ensure a good night’s sleep, be warned. Children also have an impressive recovery time, and will be back to their best quicker than parents’ expectation.
“We found the children used more of their aerobic metabolism (有氧代谢) and were therefore less tired during the high-intensity physical activities.” said Sebastien Ratel, associate professor in Exercise Physiology who completed this study. “This may explain why children seem to have the ability to play and play and play, long after adults have become tired.”
Previous studies have shown that children do not tire as quickly as untrained adults during physical tasks and it was suggested they had energy profiles comparable to endurance athletes, but there was no evidence to prove it until now.
To find out, the researchers recruited 12 youngsters aged between nine and 11, 12 untrained men and 13 male endurance athletes who were national-level professional athletes or long-distance runners and cyclists. All were asked to perform two seven second resistance sprints (冲刺跑), followed by one minute recovery while their aerobic energy output was measured. On a second visit they were asked to cycle as fast as they can for 30 seconds. Anaerobic exercise produces lactic acid, which causes muscle fatigue. The participants’ heart-rate, oxygen levels and lactate-removal rates were checked after the cycling tasks to see how quickly they recovered. It was found that during the cycling test, untrained adult’s power output fell by 51.8 per cent, and athletes by 41.8 per cent, but children’s only decreased by 35.2 per cent.
The researchers believe the findings could help develop athletic potential in children as well as improve our understanding of how our bodies change from childhood to adulthood. “Many parents ask about the best way to develop their child’s athletic potential,” said co-author Anthony Blazevich, professor in Biomechanics. “Our study shows that muscle endurance is often very good in children, so it might be better to focus on other areas of fitness such as their sports technique, sprint speed or muscle strength. This may help to improve physical training in children, so that they perform better and enjoy sports more.”
43.What does the “it” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Children are better at many sports than most adults.
B.Children recover from wounds quicker than adults.
C.Children have a higher energy level than most adults.
D.Children sleep better than adults when they are tired.
44.Compared to previous studies, the study by Sebastien Ratel is unique because it .
A.found out for the first time why children were less exhausted by physical activities
B.provided parents with scientific evidence for how to ensure children rest well
C.proved for the first time that children’s endurance could be greater than athletes’
D.showed that children could be trained to complete high-intensity sports activities
45.What can be inferred from the data collected during the cycling test in paragraph 5?
A.Children have more muscle strength than adults.
B.Children experience less muscle fatigue than adults.
C.Children develop less lactic acid than adults when exercising.
D.Children show better techniques than adults in sporting activities.
46.According to Anthony Blazevich, the findings of this study may help us to .
A.improve adults’ muscle endurance B.develop children’s athletic ability
C.lower children’s decreased power output D.lift children’s aerobic metabolism level
Section C (8分)
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
From classrooms to care homes
Less than three years ago Ms Jiang was tidying away toys and singing rhymes as a teacher at a nursery in Beijing. She remembers parents knocking on the door in an effort to sign their children up. That gradually became rarer, until last year Ms Jiang found herself distributing promotional leaflets for the nursery in her lunchbreaks. 47 Last May Ms Jiang moved into a sector with better growth prospects: care homes and her abilities to teach handicrafts and play games come in useful.
Between 2017 and 2022 China’s total fertility (生育) rate crashed from 1.8 to 1. Between 2021 and 2024 pupil numbers in pre-schools fell from 48m to 36m. Some 42,000 of 295,000 pre-schools have closed, and 360,000 of 3.2m pre-school teachers have quit.
48 Whereas China’s nursery-going group will fall by 14m in the next five years, the number of people aged 65 and over will rise from 211m to 256m. China badly needs more staff to care for them. In 2021 it had just half a million certified care workers. That made for just 0.27 care workers per 100 people aged 65 and above, a shockingly low number. Universities have launched degrees in elderly care. The first batch of students graduated last year, to hot demand.
All this motivated one Ms Wu in 2023 to open her own care home in Jiangxi after years in nurseries. She has nine residents paying 2,600 yuan a month to be there. The outlook is bright, she says: right now those in care homes have multiple children on average. Those born in the 1970s and 1980s mostly have only one child, which means fewer people to look after them when they eventually get old. 49 She has also had a few from nursery teachers looking to make the switch she did.
The government likes “mixed-use” facilities where both young and old are looked after. 50 It had facilities for table-tennis and space for calligraphy, and when the nursery teachers were free, they taught the elderly. The old certainly enjoy seeing the young; some grandparents even drop off tiny relatives at the nursery before heading to their own floor.
A.A newspaper has called for local governments to provide funds for such projects.
B.A silver lining exists for those sharp-witted enough to adapt.
C.Caring for the elderly is easier than caring for young children.
D.Last year in Chongqing, for example, an empty floor of a nursery was turned into an “elderly-care station”.
E.Ms Wu gets enquiries almost every day from prospective customers.
F.She realised the writing was on the wall.
III. Summary Writing (10分)
51. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Kids Losing Fine Motor Skills?
Amy Hornbeck can tell something is off the moment her students step into the classroom. Once, kids arrived with pockets full of rocks and items collected during outdoor adventures. Now, they come with their eyes glued to a screen. And it shows: they can’t zip their coats, turn the pages of a book, or even hold a spoon properly. Today’s children are losing critical fine motor skills—the small, precise movements required to tie a shoelace, write with a pen, or build a tower. Here’s what parents need to know.
Time spent on screens—whether phones, tablets, eBooks, or TV—all adds up to time kids aren’t crafting, drawing, and building. While learning math or creating digital art can be educational, it doesn’t develop the fine motor control that comes from writing, cutting, or coloring.
Hornbeck adds that kids’ decreasing ability to focus on a task, especially one requiring effort, is a key contributor to declining fine motor skills. Take puzzles, for example. Completing one involves strategy, flipping pieces, and trial and error. But Hornbeck says, “A lot of kids simply say, ‘Nope.’ They’re used to playing on a computer, which spins the piece for you.” She adds, “Tablets provide a lot more immediate support than is available in real life.”
Convenience in parenting has also impacted skill development, says Hornbeck. Elastic pants without zippers or buttons save time on busy mornings, and pre-packaged snacks eliminate mess — but these shortcuts deprive kids of opportunities to practice zipping, buttoning, or using tools.
Hornbeck suggests parents get children off their screens. Also, parents should look for opportunities to challenge their children and insert fine motor activities into daily tasks, such as cutting coupons or cooking together, looking for stones on the way to school, pouring cups, and squeezing sponges in the bath, etc.

1.that/which 2.on 3.being introduced 4.is shared 5.that 6.don’t require 7.tested 8.while 9.itself 10.to be used
故填that/which。
故填on。
故填being introduced。
故填is shared。
故填that。
根据上文“Tesla’s tech-forward customers seem willing to take the risk(特斯拉的技术导向型客户似乎愿意承担这种风险)”以及下文“those of us who have to share the road with them would rather they didn’t(我们这些不得不与他们共享道路的人则希望他们不要这样做)”可知,前后两句是对比关系,所以用连词while表示“然而”。故填while。
be meant to do为固定短语,意为“打算做某事”,且use与逻辑主语the feature之间是被动关系,所以用不定式的被动式to be done。故填to be used。

Section B (22分)
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
The rock dove, a bird native to Europe and Western Asia, is the ancestor of the common urban pigeon.
【答案】36.A 37.B 38.B 39.C
根据第二段“Cities have a lot to offer pigeons, as tall buildings and window shelves can serve as nesting sites for rock doves. Urban residents provide plenty of food for pigeons either intentionally by feeding pigeons birdseed or bread or unintentionally by leaving out food waste. In addition to human-sourced food, pigeons have a broad diet, including seeds, berries, and insects. Pigeon enthusiasts also set domesticated birds free into the urban environment, where they later bring forth young.(城市为鸽子提供了很多,因为高楼和窗台上的架子可以作为岩鸽的筑巢地点。城市居民有意地给鸽子喂鸟食或面包,或无意地留下食物垃圾,为鸽子提供了大量的食物。除了人类来源的食物,鸽子的饮食也很广泛,包括种子、浆果和昆虫。鸽子爱好者还把驯养的鸽子放生到城市环境中,然后在那里繁殖后代)”可知,城市中适宜的栖息地、丰富的食物以及鸽子爱好者放飞驯养的鸽子等是城市中鸽子存活的原因,未提到适合鸽子的气候。故选A。
根据划线词上文“Pigeons’ ability to reproduce year-round leads to highly numerous pigeons in the city, which is an issue for urban wildlife managers.(鸽子全年繁殖的能力导致城市中鸽子数量众多,这对城市野生动物管理人员来说是个问题。)”
根据最后一段“Managers have used deadly tools such as poisons. However, this approach typically doesn’t have sustained results because the remaining pigeons multiply rapidly. Further, many poisons are not species-specific and may harm other urban birds. Other programs aimed at reducing nest success involve removing the eggs and replacing them with fake eggs.(管理人员使用了致命的工具,如毒药。然而,这种方法通常不会产生持久的结果,因为剩下的鸽子繁殖迅速。此外,许多毒素不是特定物种的,可能会伤害其他城市鸟类)”可知,毒药会让剩下的鸽子繁殖迅速,而且许多毒素不是特定物种的,可能会伤害其他城市鸟类,由此可知这种方法从长远来看是无效的。故选B。
39.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Preventing conflicts ultimately relies on removing food sources for urban pigeons. For example, many urban residents feed pigeons in parks. This could be limited through public education campaigns or by carrying out feeding regulations.(防止冲突最终依赖于消除城市鸽子的食物来源。例如,许多城市居民在公园里喂鸽子。这可以通过公共教育运动或执行喂养规定加以限制)”可知,停止喂鸽子是控制鸽子数量的关键。故选C。

根据第一段“Parents exhausted by their children may have suspected it all along. (被孩子累坏的父母可能一直怀疑这一点)”以及第二段中“Youngsters have greater energy levels than professional endurance athletes, scientists have discovered (科学家发现,儿童的能量水平高于专业耐力运动员)”可知,父母一直怀疑的是“儿童比大多数成年人拥有更高的能量水平”,所以it指代的是下文中的“Children have a higher energy level than most adults.”。故选C项。
根据第三段““We found the children used more of their aerobic metabolism (有氧代谢) and were therefore less tired during the high-intensity physical activities.” said Sebastien Ratel, associate professor in Exercise Physiology who completed this study. “This may explain why children seem to have the ability to play and play and play, long after adults have become tired.”(“我们发现,儿童在高强度体力活动中会更多地利用有氧代谢,因此不易感到疲劳。”完成这项研究的运动生理学副教授Sebastien Ratel说,“这或许解释了为什么孩子们似乎能够一直玩下去,而大人们早已精疲力竭。”)”、第四段“Previous studies have shown that children do not tire as quickly as untrained adults during physical tasks and it was suggested they had energy profiles comparable to endurance athletes, but there was no evidence to prove it until now. (先前的研究表明,儿童在体力活动中不像未受过训练的成年人那样容易疲劳,并有人提出他们的能量状况可与耐力运动员相媲美,但直到现在才有证据证明这一点)”和第五段中“It was found that during the cycling test, untrained adult’s power output fell by 51.8 per cent, and athletes by 41.8 per cent, but children’s only decreased by 35.2 per cent.(研究发现,在骑行测试中,未经训练的成年人功率输出下降了51.8%,运动员下降了41.8%,而儿童的降幅仅为35.2%)”可知,Sebastien Ratel的研究独特之处在于它首次证明了儿童的耐力可能比运动员更强。故选C项。
根据第五段中“On a second visit they were asked to cycle as fast as they can for 30 seconds.
根据最后一段中“The researchers believe the findings could help develop athletic potential in children (研究人员认为,这些发现可能有助于开发儿童的运动潜能)”以及Anthony Blazevich所说“Our study shows that muscle endurance is often very good in children, so it might be better to focus on other areas of fitness such as their sports technique, sprint speed or muscle strength. This may help to improve physical training in children, so that they perform better and enjoy sports more. (我们的研究表明,儿童的肌肉耐力通常非常好,因此或许最好将重点放在体能的其他方面,比如他们的运动技术、冲刺速度或肌肉力量。这可能有助于改善儿童的体能训练,让他们表现更好,更享受运动)”可知,这项研究的发现可能有助于开发儿童的运动能力。故选B项。

Fine motor skills, small and precise movements, are being lost by children. More screen time means less time to develop the skills. Also, digital devices’ immediate support makes kids focus less on effort-requiring tasks, causing skills to decline. Finally, convenience in parenting prevents the skill development. Parents should divert kids from screens and integrate fine motor activities into daily tasks. (60 words)

Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.
(no use) (汉译英)
______________________________________________________________________________________
It’s no use just doing endless exercises without reflecting on what you’ve done.
It’s no use just doing…;表示“刷题”应用do endless exercises,此处使用动名词形式作主语;表示“不反思”应用without reflecting on what you’ve done, reflecting为动名词形式作宾语,what you’ve done为what引导的宾语从句,what在从句中作宾语,从句使用现在完成时。 It’s no use just doing endless exercises without reflecting on what you’ve done.。
______________________________________________________________________________________
There is no final conclusion on whether listening to audiobooks will discourage children from reading the book on their own.
There is no final conclusion on whether listening to audiobooks will discourage children from reading the book on their own.
(...as...)
______________________________________________________________________________________
Feasible as the plan is in theory, we encountered a host of unexpected problems during its implementation.
Feasible as the plan is in theory, we encountered a host of unexpected problems during its implementation.
______________________________________________________________________________________
It is widely acknowledged that the impact of inadequate quality sleep on people’s health and learning efficiency is evident. We should strike a balance between work and rest, as the old saying goes: “More haste, less speed.”
It is widely acknowledged that,其中it作形式主语,that引导主语从句;“对人的健康和学习效率的影响”翻译为the impact of inadequate quality sleep on people’s health and learning efficiency,在从句中作主语;表示“显而易见的”形容词为evident;“劳逸结合”翻译为strike a balance between work and rest,前为情态动词should,应用动词原形;表示“俗话说的好”短语为as the saying goes;表示“欲速则不达”为More haste, less speed。 It is widely acknowledged that the impact of inadequate quality sleep on people’s health and learning efficiency is evident. We should strike a balance between work and rest, as the old saying goes: “More haste, less speed.”
