Volunteering as a group with Washington Trails Association(WTA)is a valuable way to give back to nature.
You'll spend the day team-building and learning new skills.No experience is needed,but here are some things to
know before you get started.
Group Guidelines
Small Groups(2-6 people):You can self-register for a work party.Please browse our schedule for upcoming
work parties in the next 4-6 weeks.
Large Groups(7-20 people):We can arrange private work parties for community or corporate groups.For
these requests,we need at least two months'notice.
Groups over 20:If your group is larger than 20,we can offer multiple separate work parties.We cannot
accommodate more than 20 people in one work party.
Schedule Location
We offer work parties Tuesday through Sunday throughout the year.A typical work party starts at 8:30 a.m.
and ends by 3:30 p.m.Location and date options will be provided after you reach out to WTA.Greater flexibility in
your request will unlock more opportunities.
Preparation Checklist
Physical Condition:Volunteers will be active for up to 6 hours on uneven ground.We encourage everyone
to work at their own pace.

Environment:Project sites are rarely near toilets.Your group should be comfortable with the environment
according to "Leave No Trace"principles
Required Items:Volunteers must wear closed-toed strong shoes,long pants,and a long-sleeved shirt.Other
things include work gloves,a backpack,lunch,plenty of drinking water,rain clothes,and extra warm
clothes for bad weather.WTA provides necessary tools and hard hats.

Abandoned homes,closed stores,and empty lands:these signs of decline were once everywhere in Englewood,
a community in Chicago.It's one of the city's most dangerous neighborhoods,with a high poverty rate.Many
people avoided Englewood because of these problems while Quilen Blackwell moved there because of them.
Blackwell grew up comfortably in Wisconsin.After college,he served in rural Thailand,which arouse his
interest in the environment issues.Later,tutoring at an Englewood high school opened his eyes to his students'
struggles."They can live a better life."he says.
In 2015,he and his wife Hannah bought a home in Englewood.They planned to turn a piece of deserted land
into a community farm,but they faced issues like soil toxins and water access.Researching alternatives,Blackwell
learned the U.S.spends billions on cut flowers each year-over 70%imported."Why import flowers when we have
land and youth?"he thought."Maybe flowers are the answer."
In 2017,they bought two empty lands and started a commercial flower farm,using rainwater and solar power,
with no chemicals
But farms are only half the story.Since 2019,their nonprofit shop,Southside Blooms,has sold the flowers they
grow-providing various job opportunities for the youth.Dionta White,28,grew up in Englewood,fell into street
life,and went to jail.But now he's a senior farm team member."Working here,I saw myself changing-calmer,
more into nature,"he says."It feels good to let people see me and Englewood differently."
Early next year,Blackwell says he will open a second shop in Chicago and begin the process of expanding
nationally.He believes that flower farms could eventually become common in urban areas across the U.S.
