One of my most treasured memories of childhood was watching those magical fireflies (萤火虫) light up a field at night. I remember how comforting it was to have the night lightened by countless fireflies announcing their place in the world.
In my adult years, however, I’ve noticed far fewer of these insects. A lot of my friends and families have made the same observation. This is why I was so happy to see a good number of fireflies in our small lawn (草坪) the other night.
My 9-year-old daughter, a girl to not one — but two biologists — is following in her parents’ footsteps already. She is crazy about all wild things. Needless to say, she was pleased with the chance to put off bedtime and to explore a new natural wonder with Mama when I called: “Honey! Come out and see all the fireflies!”
Without wearing shoes, she rushed into the summer night to look at one of the most magical shows of nature — a field of fireflies! It was a moment I would never forget.
So, what’s changed? Why are so many of us seeing fewer fireflies? It mainly has to do with habitat loss caused by increased development and our American obsession (痴迷) with large lawns and “tidy” views.
In our case, we are seeing more fireflies because we’ve recently let parts of our lawn “go”. A neighbor asked us the other day, “Do you guys mow (割草)?!” In some places we do; in others we only mow once a year. We now have a lovely little lawn under our apple trees that is delivering big rewards. We enjoy the free-growing wildflowers by day and the tall plants support more fireflies for us to enjoy at night.
4. What can we learn about the author when she was a child?
A. She had no lights at home at night.
B. She was greatly impressed by fireflies.
C. She noticed fireflies disappearing gradually.
D. She showed great interest in studying insects.
5. Why is the author’s daughter crazy about wild things?

B. She likes playing outdoors at night.
C. She lives in the city most of the time.
D. She has been influenced by her parents.
6. Why is the author seeing more fireflies in her lawn?
A. Her wild lawn attracted them.
B. Her lawn was in good condition.
C. She built houses for fireflies in her lawn.
D. She grew many apple trees in her garden.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Create a happy childhood for your kids.
B. Teach children to care for the environment.
C. Bring the magic of fireflies back home again.
D. Improve the environment through our efforts.
C
Farming brings a special joy. You feel connected to the earth, and it’s rewarding to plant seeds that grow into life-giving things. Agriculture combines age-old traditions with caring for the land and feeding communities around the globe.
Many people tend to see agriculture as a romantic activity that lets them get back to nature. However, in reality, efficient and healthy agricultural practices rely on a lot of innovative technology and data. Farmers need the data from the fields in order to keep their crops growing well.
This is where VTT, a Finnish technical research center, comes in. The center has created a solar-powered battery cell (电池组) that can power agricultural sensors and then biodegrade (生物降解) into the soil. This device was made by an international team from six science groups. The cell is about the size of a credit card. It is light, so it can be attached to plants easily. Most importantly, the cell will break down in a few weeks or months.
“When a solar cell is used in an agricultural application, biodegradability is essential. In this case, there is no real harm caused if the cell cannot be removed from the field, even if it is in close contact with the soil. And it does not add harmful substances to the environment, nor does it exacerbate microplastic problems. ”Maria Smolander, a team research leader at VTT, said in a statement.
These solar cells are very helpful for farmers in the European Union (EU). EU rules require these farmers to check soil health regularly. The cells also help farmers around the world: They help collect correct data, support environmental sustainability (可持续性) through biodegradability, and help increase agricultural production effectively.
Technology is changing faster than ever, and it can bring great positive changes too. VTT’s solar cells use innovative technology that has the potential to improve how farmers work, and contribute to a world that is more sustainable, healthier, and better fed.
8. How can efficient and healthy agriculture be achieved?
A. By relying on traditional farming skills.
B. By using innovative technology and data.
C. By building a romantic connection to nature.
D. By getting support from global communities.
9. Which is the key feature of the new battery cell?
A. It is as small as a credit card.
B. It can be attached to the plants.
C. It can break down in the soil quickly.
D. It is developed by an international team.
10. What does the underlined word “exacerbate” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Worsen. B. Solve. C. Reduce. D. Limit.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To explain how solar cells work in agriculture.
B. To show solar cells’ role in sustainable agriculture.
C. To introduce EU farming rules about sustainability.
D. To compare traditional and modern farming methods.
D
The world’s animal populations have decreased by more than two-thirds since 1970, according to a recent research from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The London group provided information on 32,000 wildlife populations which included more than 5,000 species. The researchers found that population sizes had declined by 69 percent on average. They said the loss of forests, human exploitation (开发) of the environment, pollution, and climate change were great causes of the loss. Land-use change is still the biggest threat to wildlife. However, the researchers added, ”if we cannot limit warming to 1.5“C, climate change is likely to become the dominant cause of biodiversity loss in the coming years.”
Wildlife populations in Latin American and the Caribbean Sea area were greatly affected. The research showed a 94 percent drop in those areas in over 50 years. Wildlife populations in river and lake habitats decreased the most. Freshwater populations have declined by an average of 83 percent since 1970. For example, one population of pink river dolphins in the Amazon River area of Brazil fell by 65 percent between 1994 and 2016.
These findings are a red flag that warns of a larger system failure on the horizon. Even one species’ population decline can affect other species, eventually impacting the ecosystem’s ability to function. Humans depend on a stable climate, predictable weather patterns, and productive farmland and fisheries to thrive (蓬勃发展), but the current trends are severe enough to threaten many life-sustaining systems.
Our future depends on reversing(扭转) the loss of nature just as much as it depends on dealing with climate change. And you can’t solve one without solving the other. Everyone has a role in reversing these trends, from individuals to companies to governments. If nothing changes, animal populations will undoubtedly continue to fall, driving wildlife to extinction and threatening the integrity (完整) of the ecosystems on which we all depend.
12. What is the greatest threat to wildlife populations currently?
A. Illegal hunting.
B. Global warming.
C. Land-use change.
D. Environmental pollution.
13. How does the author explain the decline of freshwater wildlife in paragraph 3?
A. By listing figures.
B. By analyzing the causes.
C. By making a comparison.
D. By referring to a concept.
14. What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A. Climate change threatens many wild animals.
B. Farmland is the basis of life-sustaining systems
C. Species diversity is important to maintain a stable ecosystem.
D. Extreme weather events have become more and more frequent.
15. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To explain the difficulty of restoring ecosystems
B. To call on people to take action to protect nature.
C. To present the increasing trend of climate change.
D. To show people’s efforts in reversing the loss of nature.

How to Be Creative
Most of us think that creativity is a quality (品质) belonging only to artists, writers, or dancers, rather than ourselves. ___16___ The following tips are a great beginning for developing our creativity.
Get out of your comfort zone
We eagerly accept the familiar and fear the unknown. Break out of your usual patterns and welcome creativity into your life. As said earlier, the human brain was designed to recognize patterns. ___17___ In fact, our comfort zone is nothing more than a collection of patterns. As we become more efficient at recognizing and using patterns, we rely less on creativity to find new paths. We should force ourselves out of our comfort zones and open up new possibilities.
Try different things
If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got. We are creatures of habits and routines, and creativity hates routines (常规). If you usually drive to work, take the subway for a few days. ___18___ Break your routine, experiment and try something new. New things are often creative, but the same old thing never is.
___19___
Having a great idea is not enough, you must work to make it a reality. Have you ever seen a new product and realized that you thought of the same thing long ago? Yet someone else is making money with “your” idea. ___20___ The difference between a dreamer and a doer is action. Do whatever it takes to bring your ideas to life. If you can put them into practice, you are well on your way to improving your creativity in all areas of your life.
A. Take action
B. Seek several options
C. Think from the other person’s point of view.
D. If you normally eat in the office, have lunch under a tree.
E. We continue to create patterns for almost everything we do.
F. The truth is that we are all born with the ability to be creative.
G. We all have great ideas sometimes, but only a few people turn their ideas into realities.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help crying sadly when she thought of the scolding (责骂) from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was impossible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, do you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes ... but I don’t have money on me ...”, she replied. “That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “come in.” The seller brought her a bowl of tasty noodles. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently. “What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“I was just touched by your kindness!”, said Jenny as she wiped her tears, “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless. She remembered mother’s familiar face. “Why didn’t I think of that? I appreciated a bowl of noodles from a stranger, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

A. She is studying biology.
B. She likes playing outdoors at night.
C. She lives in the city most of the time.

6. Why is the author seeing more fireflies in her lawn?
A. Her wild lawn attracted them.
B. Her lawn was in good condition.
C. She built houses for fireflies in her lawn.

【答案】12. C 13. A 14. C 15. B

【答案】16. F 17. E 18. D 19. A 20. G

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back to life.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. She was nervous because she didn’t know how her mother would react. As she slowly opened the door, she saw her mother sitting in the living room, with red eyes as if she had been crying. Jenny couldn’t hold back her tears and said, “Mom, I’m so sorry for running away and speaking rudely to you.” It was at that moment that she realized how much her mother loved her, even though she never said it out loud. She remembered all the meals her mother had cooked and the nights when she stayed up late helping with homework.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back to life. Her mother pulled her into a hug and whispered, “I was so worried about you.” That simple action made Jenny feel warmth spreading through her body. She lifted her head and looked into her mother’s eyes, which were full of love. No matter what happened, she knew her mother would always be there for her. This experience taught her that true love doesn’t need many words, but shows itself in small actions every day.
