How would you feel if you couldn’t use the Internet on your phone for two weeks? Surprisingly, some people felt better after doing just that! New research suggests that turning off your smartphone’s Internet can improve your mental (心理的) health, your ability to focus, and your sense of well-being (幸福).
A group of researchers in the United States and Canada wanted to know how turning off the Internet on smartphones would influence people’s feelings. They studied 467 people aged between 18 and 74. These people used a special app that blocked (阻止) the Internet on their phones for two weeks. They could still make calls and send text messages.
The researchers asked the people questions about their feelings and tested how well they could focus. The results were very interesting! About 91% of the people felt better in at least one area — their mood, their focus, or their happiness. 71% of them said they had better mental health after the two weeks, and 73% said they had improved well-being. The people also did better on focus tests.
Looking more deeply into the reasons for these changes, the researchers found that when people weren’t using the Internet, they spent more time outside, got more exercise, met and talked to others.
It was hard for many people to stay offline (离线的 ) for two full weeks. In fact, only 25% actually did so! However, even those who only blocked the Internet for part of the time showed improvements. Some people kept using their phones less even after the two weeks were over.
Although completely blocking the Internet from our smartphones might be difficult, the study shows that using it less — like spending less time on some apps — can help us feel better too.

A. Sending text messages to friends.
B. Using a special app to play games.

A. They used the Internet less than before. B. They never used their phones again.
C. They wanted to take the tests again. D. They used the Internet more than before.
32. Which one is TRUE?
A. The research had over 467 people join in.
B. Some people felt happier after using the Internet less on phones.
C. People in the research couldn’t send text messages with phones during the test.
D. The research was only about young students.

An “ancient city” appeared on the surface of a lake. But after about half an hour, the “city” was gone. You might think that some unknown forces were in control of it. But it’s believed that the “city on the lake” was actually a mirage (海市蜃楼)
A mirage is a false view caused by light and air. Normally, light travels in a straight line, but it can bend (弯曲 ) and change direction depending on what it passes through. This bending is called “refraction”.
If air has different temperatures, light will bend in different ways when passing through it. This can create a false image (影像) of a nearby object.
The air close to the lake is colder and thicker than the air higher up, because the lake takes in most of the heat. The buildings in the mirage were actually on a nearby mountain. But their image appeared above the lake because light bent in different air temperatures.
Mirages happen not only over large bodies of water, but also anywhere where the ground can absorb (吸收) a lot of heat. They are often seen on the hot roads and in the desert. The next time you think you see a pool of water on the road on a hot summer day, you will know it’s just a mirage — an image of the sky caused by bending light.
33. How does light normally travel?
A. B. C. D.
34. What does the underlined word “refraction” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Light travels straight. B. Light bends and changes direction.
C. Air absorbs heat. D. False images aren’t created.

B. We can never see mirages on hot roads.
