But by any criteria this work is worth it to us as well, because it shows that we are global citizens interested in world stability, and that we feel responsible for others and are ready to build a community with a shared future for mankind.

1. Present the writing requirements: Write a speech about China’s aid to other countries or volunteer work.
2. In groups, brainstorm a list of possible causes that you could talk about.
3. In pairs, go over the list and discuss these points:
Which, if any, of the causes do you have a personal connection with?
What personal story could you tell in relation to that cause?
How did that affect your opinions on the issue?

Good morning everyone! I am Li Hua, chairman of the volunteer club. Not only is volunteer work beneficial to others but it also is meaningful to myself.
I’ve had two experiences of being a volunteer—being a dustman and being a primary school teacher in the mountainous area. The latter left a deeper impression on me. Poor as the teaching conditions were, children didn’t resign themselves to difficulties and actively consulted with me about problems relevant to their learning. Besides, villagers were polite as well as friendly to us. It is making others happy that gives me a sense of achievement. As is mentioned above, why not join us?
