With the development of science and technology, we have learned a lot about animals. Emperor penguins (帝企鹅) are the largest of all the penguin kinds. In 2022, they were listed as endangered animals because the Antarctic sea ice that they live on is becoming less and less. Now scientists are using high technology to follow them and learn more about how to protect them.
One of the ways is by looking at pictures taken by satellites (卫星) above the Earth. Large groups of emperor penguins can be seen from space. When scientists first started using satellites to look at the penguins, there were only 28 groups. So far, scientists have discovered 66 groups.
It is difficult to count penguins even with satellites. Scientists can better estimate (估算) their number by watching the weather carefully. Measuring the wind speed and temperature can help predict if the penguins gather closely together or spread apart across the ice. If scientists know what the weather was like when the pictures were taken, they can estimate how many penguins are pictured.
Scientists can also watch penguins’ movements by giving them special electronic tags (电子标签). A scanner is carried by a robot, and it can read information on the tags. The robot also uses AI to recognize the penguins. It moves very slowly so that it doesn’t make the birds stressed.
Daniel, one of the penguin researchers, hopes the technology will lead us to a “golden age of research”. Thanks to technology, we are seeing more things that no one has ever seen before.
24. Why were emperor penguins listed as endangered animals?
A. Because they are having fewer babies.
B. Because their living sea ice is getting less.
C. Because there is not enough food for them in the sea.
25. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

B. How many emperor penguins there are in total.
C. Why satellites are useful for studying penguins.
26. How does the robot help scientists learn about penguins?
A. It can fly like a bird and watch penguins in the sky.
B. It teaches penguins to learn new skills and movements.
C. It carries a scanner to read electronic tags on penguins.
27. On which of the following websites can you most probably find this passage?
A. https://www.sciencenews.com/ explorers/.
B. https://www.bbcamerica.com/ movies/.

In Zhoucheng, a village in Yunnan Province, the air is always filled with the smell of plants for tie-dyeing (扎染). To make beautiful patterns on cloth, people tie it before dipping (浸泡) it into the dye. Then they take out the cloth and untie it after 10 to 30 minutes. Finally, we will get the cloth dyed with different patterns. This traditional art form of the Bai ethnic group (民族) is well-known across China. In 2006, it was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产). The village has become a special home for tie-dyes, with over 200 workshops and about 4,000 artisans (工匠).
Duan Yuan comes from a family of tie-dye inheritors (传承人). His parents are both great masters of the old skill. They worked hard to develop it. His mother learned more than 100 ways to make beautiful patterns, much more than the traditional 30 kinds. His father used natural plants like gardenia (栀子花) and saffron (藏红花) to make new colors, not just the traditional blue.
Duan and his wife Yang Zhirui joined the family business later. They love the art form deeply and are trying to give it new life. Yang uses modern, simple design ideas to make fashionable clothes and matching family outfits. She thinks every piece of tie-dye is special and full of possibilities.
The family also built a museum to protect the old art form. They have saved more than 1,800 rare patterns, 3,600 templates (模板) and 700 old works. Every year, over 200,000 visitors come to learn and experience the beauty of tie-dyes.
For the Bai people, tie-dye is part of their life and culture. Thanks to the family’s efforts, the ancient art is growing with new energy and moving to a bright future.
28. When was the tie-dye of the Bai ethnic group listed as a national intangible cultural heritage?
A. In 2000. B. In 2006. C. In 2016.
29. What can we know about Yang Zhirui?
A. She only makes traditional tie-dye clothes.
B. She learned over 100 ways to make beautiful patterns.
C. She uses modern ideas to make fashionable tie-dye works.
30. How does the writer show the development of tie-dyeing in Zhoucheng?
A. By telling stories. B. By asking questions. C. By giving numbers and examples.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Special Museum in Yunnan
B. Bai People’s Tie-Dyeing: A Living Heritage
C. Modern Fashion from Yunnan
