About one year ago, my grandfather was ill. His illness influenced (影响) his legs, which made it difficult for him to walk. Then my family started looking for nursing homes. It took us two weeks before making a decision. Unluckily, he had to stay there until he improved. Then I knew the care and service old people needed and how important it was to volunteer at a nursing home.
I did volunteer work at my grandfather’s nursing home last summer. I volunteered twice a week during the summer. I learned many things about nursing homes, including the old people’s life, the care they received and the environment around them.
I worked with Dr. Smith, the one who planned activities for the old. I read their children’s letters to them. Besides, I helped them on special days like Ice Cream Day, Summer Picnic Day and Clown Around Day. I also took the old people for walks or had birthday parties for them.
I had many good experiences both volunteering and visiting my grandfather. My volunteering experience showed that I could bring joy to old people. Everyone will have to face their parents and grandparents growing older.

During my teen years, I was a shy girl. I was never interested in volunteering. I just thought it was something people who had a lot of free time did. My opinion of volunteering changed when I started university. I heard my new friends talk about all the ways they had helped others and, in return, how they had improved themselves.
I started volunteering when I was 19 years old. As an English major, I volunteered to teach children English in schools in my city. Later, I realized I wasn’t getting anything new out of my volunteer service. I decided to move out of my comfort zone. I volunteered at different art festivals. These chances helped me to greatly improve my organizational and communication skills.
The most important and life-changing volunteering experience for me happened in the summer of 2019. During that time, I realized that just volunteering in my local area wasn’t enough. It was time for me to try volunteering abroad. I spent a month and a half in Romania teaching English to children from poor families. That experience helped me to improve my teaching skills. I also completely changed myself. It helped me become more confident and open-minded. I met people from all over the world and learned to work together with them. Since then, I have made many international friends. These days, I am always able to do better than my co-workers (同事) whenever my job needs cross-cultural communication.
Volunteering is one of the best things you could ever do, both for yourself and for the people you are going to help along the way. Don’t ever hesitate to join the community of volunteers!

五、阅读并回答问题。(共5小题,每小题2分,计10分)
Helping people with special needs is an important part of building a caring society. However, it is necessary for us to learn the correct way to offer help, so that we do not hurt their feelings by accident.
When you meet someone with a visual impairment, you should not touch their guide dog or white cane without asking. It is extremely impolite to do so. If you want to help them cross the street, just ask, "Do you need any help?" If they say yes, then you can gently hold their arm to guide them.
For those who use wheelchairs, it is vital to respect their personal space. Never move their wheelchair without permission. Also, it is considered rude to talk to them while standing up; you should sit down or bend down to communicate at eye level. This shows that you treat them as equals.
True help comes from understanding and patience. Remember, it is unkind to stare at them or ask about their disability directly. The most important thing is to protect their dignity while offering a helping hand.
