She is 1.84 meters tall. She plays so fiercely that people have nicknamed her “Iron Hammer (铁榔头)”. In China, she is to volleyball what Yao Ming is to basketball. Her name is Lang Ping.
Lang, 60 years old in 2020, is the head coach of the Chinese women’s volleyball team. In 2016, she led the team to win a gold medal at the Rio Olympic Games.
Back when she was playing the sport in the 1980s, she was the symbol of Chinese volleyball. Much more than an athlete (运动员), she is the face of a generation of players.
Before the 1980s, there were three world powers in volleyball: the former Soviet Union (苏联), Japan and Cuba. However, at the 1981 World Cup in Japan, a surprise team took home the title (冠军;头衔): China. The Chinese team did not play with speed, but they proved they had the best skills. While playing on the team, Lang led the Chinese women’s volleyball team to two World Cups, two World Championships and a gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984. The Chinese team became the first team in volleyball history to win five world titles in a row.
After that, Lang and her teammates became big names in China. It happened at a time when China was beginning to open up to the world. People knew little about China. Some people feel very close to nature. Some feel calmer in green spaces, while others feel happier near the sea. A new study suggests that this connection to nature might have to do with people’s childhood. It could affect how much they care about the environment when they are older.
Researchers in Austria wanted to know what made people more likely to protect the environment.
They did a survey with a lot of volunteers, including 1,240 men and 1,130 women. They asked the volunteers about their environmental habits. The questions included how often they spent time in green and blue spaces and how close they felt to nature. The researchers especially wanted to know how often these people visited places like rivers or the sea as children.
The study found something interesting. People who spent a lot of time near water as children felt more connected to nature when they grew up. They also spend a lot of time in both green and blue spaces now. The researchers think that spending time in blue spaces as a child might make someone care more about the environment when they are older.
The researchers also found some interesting differences between men and women. They found that men tend to spend more time in green spaces, such as going hiking or having a picnic. However, women tend to do more things to preserve the environment. For example, they always ride bikes, use cloth bags or use less electricity and water.
The researchers hope to find a stronger connection between spending time near water as a child and caring more about the environment later in life. They believe that if they can solve this problem, it might help solve environmental problems in the future.
1.How many volunteers took part in the survey?
A.2,370. B.1,240. C.1,130. D.2,730.
2.Who probably care more about the environment according to paragraph 3?
A.Adults who liked green and blue in childhood.
B.Adults who often got close to nature in childhood.
C.Parents who often take their children to draw pictures.
D.Parents who spend much time near the rivers with kids.
3.What does the underlined word “preserve” mean?
A.Create. B.Protect. C.Pollute. D.Challenge.
4.What might the researchers do next according to the passage?
A.Write a report about how to enjoy nature.
B.Do a new survey on environmental problems.
C.Find the differences on environmental behaviors (环保行为) between men and women.
D.Explore a stronger connection between childhood’s experience and nature care.
5.Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.Adults’ Time Spent in Blue and Green Spaces
B.Environmental Problems Found in Blue and Green Spaces
C.Kids’ Time in Blue Space Connected to Green Life Choices
D.Childhood Memories in Blue Spaces Affected Adults’ Happiness

Shehuo (社火), meaning “Community Fire”, is a folk activity showing people’s happiness and good wishes. Farmers usually perform it outdoors during the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival, mainly in northern China such as Shanxi, Shaanxi and other places. It includes many kinds of performance such as dragon dance, stilt walking, land boating dance, yangge dance, weifeng drum dance, and so on. There are also wonderful evening activities like iron flower beating and firework shows.
Stilt Walking (踩高跷)
Performers usually dress up as ancient people. They tie two wooden stilts to their feet, which makes them taller than others. They walk on stilts carefully in the streets. However, it is not easy to put on a good show. Performers need to have some skills and a good sense of balance when performing, or they will fall easily and get hurt.
Land Boating DanceA land boat is usually made of bamboo and cloth. During the show, people dress up as boatmen and passengers. They carry the “boat” and move on land to make it look like a real boat travelling on water. They dance to music and create a happy and festive atmosphere. This art form is very popular among people.
Iron Flower BeatingIt is also called “Iron Pouring Art”. People use this art to celebrate harvests, weddings and the Spring Festival. Performers must work together to get ready for the show. First, they melt iron in a crucible (炉缸) with fire until it becomes hot liquid (液体). Before the performance, they wear thick cowhide clothes and straw hats to keep safe from the heat and sparks. Then they use long willow scoops to take the hot molten iron. At last, they pour the iron onto walls or throw it into the sky. It makes beautiful sparks as high as 10 meters. Some artists even make amazing “fire trees” and “iron waterfalls”.
The Performance Process
These colorful activities win people’s hearts deeply. When people are asked about their favorite shehuo activities, they share their thoughts with excitement.
Li Lei, a local citizen, says, “I like stilt walking best. I think the performers look cool and amazing when walking on tall stilts. It is not easy to keep balance, so it shows their great courage and skills.”
Zhang Hua, a volunteer, says, “I enjoy Iron Flower Beating the most. I am deeply attracted by the bright sparks, beautiful fire trees and fantastic iron waterfalls in the dark sky. It is the most wonderful and unforgettable part of shehuo.”
Shehuo is more than just a show. It represents the unity and celebration spirit of local communities, passing down cultural values from generation to generation. And it also carries people’s wishes for a better life and a bright future.
