Clean Energy: The Future Is Here
Nearly a century ago, Thomas Edison envisioned using the sun’s unlimited energy. Today, that vision is a reality. “Clean energy” covers various technologies — here are five ways to use virtually limitless power sources:
CLEAN ENERGY
SOLAR
Solar panels have become less expensive and more efficient in recent years. That’s making it more competitive with other technologies and driving a rapid growth in solar adoption.
WIND
Wind machines produce the lowest-priced renewable energy. In places with enough wind, it can be cost-competitive without government allowance, and it may even be cheaper than fossil fuels.
BIOMASS
Biomass (生物质) energy originates from living or recently living organisms — everything from natural waste from forests to algae (藻类).
GEOTHERMAL
Geothermal (地热) energy taps into the internal heat of the earth — from hot water just below the ground to steam produced much further down.
WATERPOWER
Falling or running water is one of the oldest energy sources in the world. When sustainably designed, it can be a reliable clean energy.
Technological innovations and new financing methods are making renewable energy more accessible than ever before. As a result, these energy sources are expected to account for half of our global energy mix by 2030. Here are the details:
Renewable Energy Generation: 2012 vs. 2030/TWh
“I’d put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don’t have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that,” Thomas Edison said in 1931. His far-sighted idea has become real progress — the world’s shift to renewable energy is growing fast. This helps the world meet its increasing power needs in a more sustainable way, and build a cleaner, healthier, and brighter future.
21. Which type of clean energy has the lowest cost?
A. Solar. B. Waterpower. C. Wind. D. Geothermal.
22. How much is the expected growth in biomass generation from 2012 to 2030?
A. 3,100 TWh. B. 3,646 TWh. C. 4,000 TWh. D. 4,900 TWh.
23. Why does the author quote Edison?
A. To urge people to save energy.
B. To appreciate renewable energy advancements.
C. To honor his great contributions.
D. To reflect the crucial role of coal at his time.

When Marie Benton first moved to London in 2008, joining a choir helped her settle in. To comfort and boost confidence for people in trouble, she hung posters in local hostels advertising “a choir with no name (yet)”, and it was an immediate success. Thus was officially born The Choir with No Name (TCWNN), which now has seven choirs across multiple cities to support those affected by homelessness and exclusion (排斥).
Studies have documented the close link between homelessness and poor mental health. A 2022 report revealed homeless people experience worse physical and mental health than the general population. Fortunately, research in Psychology of Music found choir participation improves positive emotions, with 88% of people seeing mental health improvements and 78% reporting reduced stress and anxiety.
Frequently ignored and often rejected, homeless people are often isolated (孤立). “Our choirs aim to do the opposite, where everyone is seen and heard,” says TCWNN’s CEO Dr. Kate Wareham.
Unlike other groups, TCWNN is free to join, welcoming people of all ages, backgrounds and musical abilities, with no pre-registration, audition (试唱) or regular commitment. Rehearsals (彩排) start with a chat, followed by 90 minutes of group singing and a hot meal afterward. The choir directors are teaching group singing in a way that ensures everyone is supported to grow both personally and musically.
Dan, who has been in the choir since 2015, says his life has been transformed. Forced to leave his family home and living in a hostel, he had withdrawn from the world. Weekly rehearsals gave him a routine among the chaos, providing hope during darkness. “When I joined, I was at the bottom of the ladder; choir was the start of climbing up, and, slowly but surely, I got to where I am today — a confident and outgoing person.” he says. Now Dan has his own flat and rebuilds family relationships.
24. Why did Marie Benton start TCWNN?
A. To establish a choir network across the UK.
B. To help herself settle in London quickly.
C. To help with the promotion of local hostels.
D. To uplift people facing hardships.
25. What does the research in Psychology of Music show?
A. Growing popularity of singing activities.
B. The poor physical health of homeless people.
C. The link between homelessness and mental health.
D. Positive effects of choir involvement on health.
26. What does TCWNN feature?
A. Advanced registration. B. Easy access for everyone.
C. High attendance demands. D. Professional musical skills.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. TCWNN: Where Every Voice Matters B. Hope: What Science Says about Choirs
C. Singing: A Way to Beat Stress D. Music: A Cure for Poor Health

A field trip to a water treatment plant inspired two teenagers from Texas to develop a device that targets one of the most widespread forms of modern pollution: microplastics.
As detailed by Business Insider, Victoria Ou and Justin Huang, who have been friends since primary school, won a $ 50,000 prize after presenting their ultrasonic microplastic filter (超声波微塑料过滤器). They revealed their invention in May at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, a platform for young innovators working on projects to benefit humanity.
Ou and Huang, both 17, had long cared about environmental issues, but their trip to the water treatment plant was when the light bulb went on regarding their ISEF project. There, they discovered that microplastics are not regulated and thus remain in our wastewater. “We wanted to find a solution to this because current solutions aren’t really effective,” Huang explained.
Though microplastics, measuring less than five millimeters, are hard to detect, a study shows that the average person consumes a credit-card-sized amount every week. They are linked to serious health issues including cancer, dementia (痴呆) and organ damage.
While existing methods to remove microplastics show some promise, they have severe limitations, including high costs and a tendency to cause pollution. To solve these problems, Huang and Ou developed a filter that uses ultrasonic waves to trap microplastics without blocking the flow of water. According to a Society for Science news release, this method can remove 84% to 94% of microplastics from water.
In the future, the pair plans to scale up (扩大规模) their device into an affordable method for widespread use. They also hope to create a smaller version for household use, such as filtering water during laundry. “But first we have to improve it, as the technology is still in its early stage,” Huang said.
28. What does the underlined part “the light bulb went on” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. An issue disappeared. B. An inspiration emerged.
C. A device was revealed. D. A reward was secured.
29. What is paragraph 4 intended to show?
A. The influence of the new device. B. The major causes of microplastics.
C. The need to handle microplastics. D. The current serious water problem.
30. What is an advantage of Huang and Ou’s device according to the text?
A. It is free of charge. B. It is eco-friendly.
C. It can reuse microplastics. D. It filters 100% of microplastics.
31. What is Huang’s opinion about their device?
A. It is far from promising. B. It is under fire.
C. It is to be bettered. D. It is well received.

What if everything happens for a reason? Burnt toast theory, a modern view on this classic idea, suggests that every little inconvenience we experience in our day-to-day lives happens for a bigger reason.
Imagine you accidentally burn your toast before leaving for work. According to burnt toast theory, this tiny inconvenience can cause a domino effect (多米诺效应). Your morning gets delayed by three to five minutes — just enough time to leave the house later than usual and avoid a potential car accident. Or perhaps you catch a later train, missing an awkward encounter with someone you don’t intend to see. You might even meet someone new whom you wouldn’t have otherwise met, leading to a friendship or romantic connection.
When we feel like things are outside our control, that can be scary. The burnt toast theory can help some people let go of their need for control and take negative situations more positively.
However, while maintaining a positive mindset can be beneficial, over-optimism can lead to “poisonous positivity”. When we only allow ourselves to focus on positive thoughts, we are denying ourselves the chance to properly deal with challenges and difficult situations to better ourselves, focusing on creating a false positive façade (表象) instead. By constantly avoiding negative experiences, we might ignore their real impact on us and fail to acknowledge when we’re struggling. It can make us feel worse about ourselves, and may lead to pushing down negative feelings or experiences, and refusing to acknowledge or deal with them fully.
Instead of focusing purely on positive thinking, working towards developing a growth mindset may be more helpful. You don’t always have to look for life’s silver linings, or even the meaning behind a little burnt toast. Sometimes things happen, and they suck. But as long as we take time to acknowledge how these things make us feel, and recognize that we can’t always control everything around us, we can still work towards improving ourselves. It is how we handle life’s unexpected changes that really matters.
32. What can be inferred from the burnt toast theory?
A. Lost in the east, gained in the west.
B. Life is a process, not a destination.
C. Lost time will never be found again.
D. Life is full of endless challenges.
33. Which can be an outcome from “poisonous positivity”?
A. Inability to control emotions. B. Decline in physical health.
C. Loss of chances to grow. D. Failure to acknowledge others.
34. Which can be seen as a growth mindset mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. Avoiding pushing others too hard. B. Finding reasons for failure.
C. Always looking on the bright side. D. Accepting misfortunes in life.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To illustrate a theory and its hidden risks.
B. To explain the function of a life theory.
C. To advocate ignoring daily negative things.
D. To prove troubles bring hidden benefits.

For individuals with social anxiety, entering a social gathering can feel overwhelming, as if you are under the spotlight and nothing you say will be possibly smart or funny enough. This fear can trigger different physical and mental symptoms. For some people, it may lead to a fast heartbeat, dizziness and a red face. ____36____. Here are some tips to help you carry on a conversation when you have social anxiety.
Practice in low-pressure settings
Before attending a major event, try starting short conversations with waiters or neighbors. These small interactions can be a low-pressure way to build confidence. Smaller, manageable social interactions don’t carry as much emotional weight, so you can practice without feeling stressed. ____37____.
Use the echo technique
Another powerful technique is to “echo” the speaker. Paraphrase what they’ve said and encourage them to explain further. For example, if they mention they’re struggling at work, repeat back their words with a question in your voice: “Struggling?” ____38____. It also takes the pressure off you, as you don’t have to think of replies on the spot.
Find an anchor
Try to find a physical “anchor” (锚点) when anxiety attacks. Holding a cold drink, pressing your feet firmly into the floor, or touching a small object can bounce you back to the present moment and signal safety to your brain. ____39____.
____40____
The good news about social events is that they all eventually end — and your departure can arrive as soon as you’d like. Informing friends beforehand of a planned leave time, or having a polite excuse to end a conversation (e.g., “It was really nice talking to you — I’m going to check in with Jane.”) can help reduce anxiety about being trapped in a conversation.
A. Avoid social events politely
B. Have an exit strategy ready
C. This simple response often leads them to share more
D. It ensures you can keep the dialogue flowing without needing to flee
E. Others might be in a negative thought cycle, or feel like their mind is going blank
F. Over time, you’ll gain a sense of confidence as you step into larger social settings
G. Sensory tricks like these help you stay focused on the present and thus relieve anxiety

I felt looked down upon, degraded, and rejected that day in seventh grade. At school and at home, I was constantly blamed for things I never did, feeling low, embarrassed, and forever behind. Their opinions defined me — I truly believed I was worthless.
A new start came in Mr. Lee’s ninth-grade science class with a group project on insect behavior — a topic I’d secretly loved since childhood. I’d stayed up late reading books, drawing sketches (草图) of ant groups, and even setting up a small observation box at home. As expected, when group formation began, I was left standing alone. “She’ll just sit there doing nothing,” whispered Omar, a boy from the front row. My cheeks burned, and I slid my notebook into my desk, fighting back tears. Just then, Mr. Lee walked over. He picked up my notebook — filled with detailed sketches of ant groups I had been making for months. “I’ve been reviewing your observations,” he said, his voice warm and firm. “Your notes on the ants’ communication methods are remarkably precise, and your sketches show exceptional attention to detail. Seeing such a bright kid fills me with pleasure.”
The word “bright” deeply touched me. Fueled by this first-ever praise, I decided to work alone, spending every lunch break on my observations while others worked in groups.
One afternoon, I entered the lab to find my observation box broken, ants running everywhere, and my precious notebook — the very proof of my “brightness” — was torn apart. Omar called it an accident. I sank to the floor, tears streaming down my face, my hard-won confidence broken completely. I felt as worthless as I had in seventh grade, unaware of Mr. Lee’s approach until his gentle voice pulled me from the darkness.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
“Your brightness isn’t torn like the notebook,” Mr. Lee said softly.

18. What is the main goal of the C-dramas according to the speaker?
A. To educate people.
B. To entertain people.
C. To sell things to people.
19. What positive effect do C-dramas have?
A. They encourage people to travel to China.
B. They enrich the content of history textbooks.
C. They inspire people’s interest in Chinese culture.
20. What is the main topic of the talk?
A. The educational role of C-dramas.
B. The factual issues within C-dramas.
C. The international impact of C-dramas.
【答案】18. B 19. C 20. A
【解析】
【原文】Chinese historical dramas have become increasingly popular in recent years. Fans around the world love them for their beauty and rich storytelling. However, many argue that these “C-dramas” contain so many incorrect details. Instead, they sell people a dream of a China that never was.
C-dramas are not educational documentaries. Screenwriters often add dramatic elements, invent characters, and change certain events to make the story more exciting or meaningful for audiences. However, I’d argue that C-dramas have something valuable to offer in terms of history education. By drawing us into the lives of people from history, they create an emotional connection to the past that no textbook could ever match.
Further research is necessary to get a proper historical and cultural education. But C-dramas have become a starting point that leads people down this worthy path. Inspired by their favorite TV shows, more young people are now exploring traditional Chinese history and culture than ever before, and that’s a real cause for celebration.

【答案】24. D 25. D 26. B 27. A

【答案】28. B 29. C 30. B 31. C

【导语】本文主要介绍了“烤焦面包理论”的内涵、积极意义,同时指出过度乐观带来的“有毒正能量”的危害,并倡导人们树立成长型心态。
【32题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“According to burnt toast theory, this tiny inconvenience can cause a domino effect. Your morning gets delayed by three to five minutes — just enough time to leave the house later than usual and avoid a potential car accident.(根据烤焦面包理论,这个小小的不便会引发多米诺效应。你的早晨会推迟三到五分钟 —— 刚好足够让你比平时晚出门,避开一场潜在的车祸)”可推知,小事的不便可能带来意外的好处,对应A项“失之东隅,收之桑榆”。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“However, while maintaining a positive mindset can be beneficial, over-optimism can lead to “poisonous positivity”. When we only allow ourselves to focus on positive thoughts, we are denying ourselves the chance to properly deal with challenges and difficult situations to better ourselves(然而,尽管保持积极的心态是有益的,但过度乐观却可能会导致“有毒正能量”。当我们只允许自己专注于积极乐观的想法时,我们剥夺了自己妥善应对挑战与困境、从而提升自我的机会)”可知,有毒正能量会让人失去成长的机会。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“But as long as we take time to acknowledge how these things make us feel, and recognize that we can’t always control everything around us, we can still work towards improving ourselves.(但只要我们花时间接纳这些事带来的感受,并认识到我们无法总是控制身边的一切,我们依然可以努力提升自己。)”可知,成长型心态是接受生活中的不幸。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Burnt toast theory, a modern view on this classic idea, suggests that every little inconvenience we experience in our day-to-day lives happens for a bigger reason.(烤焦面包理论是这一经典观点的现代解读,它认为我们在日常生活中遇到的每一件小不便,背后都有更重要的原因。)”与第四段“However, while maintaining a positive mindset can be beneficial, over-optimism can lead to ‘poisonous positivity’.(然而,尽管保持积极心态有益,但过度乐观会导致 “有毒正能量”。)”

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
“Your brightness isn’t torn like the notebook,” Mr. Lee said softly.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On presentation day, I proved my true worth through the restored project.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文
“Your brightness isn’t torn like the notebook,” Mr. Lee said softly. I lifted my tear-covered face, staring at him in disbelief. He smoothed a torn sketch gently and spoke firmly, “Things can break, but your curiosity and eye for detail are part of you. Others’ unfair opinions never define who you truly are.” His support shifted my shaken self-belief at once. With his help, I glued the sketches, added new notes, and rebuilt the box with extra care. I taped my work to the lab wall, pride replacing despair, and resolved to turn this setback into strength, ready to show my true worth in the upcoming presentation.
On presentation day, I proved my true worth through the restored project. I stood tall, holding the durable box and repaired notebook, my voice clear. I explained ants’ behaviors and shared my story: I once let rejection make me feel worthless, but Mr. Lee’s support taught me that how I see myself matters most. “This failure was a tough test, but my hard work pulled me through,” I declared. The class burst into applause; Omar whispered a soft sorry. I smiled, grasping the truth: rejection never defines you, self-belief lights your way, and every failure is just a stepping stone to real success.
