For most people, having something important stolen feels like a disaster. Robbie Pruitt admitted when his mountain bike was stolen last September, he got mad. But soon his emotions took a turn. After letting go of his anger, he found himself on a road to sympathy (同情) instead. As a biker, Pruitt’s first priority was to buy one again, but when he went bike shopping, he found the options limited. The shortage in supply got him thinking: What if the person who’d taken his bike had done so because he truly needed bikes to get to work?
With that thought in mind, Pruitt came up with a plan and posted it to a local Facebook group. He offered to fix bikes free of charge for anyone who needed it. Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair — again for free — and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike.
The day the post was put out, Pruitt was excited about a list of 30 used bicycles. And this was followed by more than 500 posts from people who either had bikes to donate or that needed fixing soon after. By the end of the month, Pruitt had repaired more than 140 bikes for donation.
Pruitt tries to give his donations to struggling families. Beyond simply satisfying a material need, he has provided an opportunity for kids in his neighborhood to learn how to fix their own bikes.
In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach teamwork, encourage self-esteem, and develop feelings of community. “Pruitt is certainly providing a service, but it’s not the bikes. It’s the relationships in the community. It’s the impact he made on people. All the neighborhood kids are spending a lot more time doing something that’s in their power,” Pruitt’s next-door neighbor Danny told The Washington Post.
4. How did Pruitt feel after he went to the bike shop?
A. He was angry at the theft. B. He became eager for a new bike.
C. He would rather find his old bike. D. He tried to put himself in the thief’s shoes.
5. Why did Pruitt put a call?
A. To find his lost bike. B. To raise some money for charity.
C. To collect old bikes. D. To advertise his bike repair shop.
6. Which of the following best describes Robbie Pruitt?
A. Responsible and humorous. B. Caring and inspiring.
C. Outgoing and brave. D. Considerate and loyal.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Bike Shopping: An Unexpected Adventure
B. A Bike Thief: A Trouble Maker
C. Robbie Pruitt: A Bike Repairman
D. A Kind Act: Inspiration From A Stolen Bike
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. B 7. D

For centuries, the Rhine River has been celebrated as the lifeline of Europe, a vital waterway for commerce, culture, and ecology. However, a study published in January 2026 reveals a troubling modern reality: this historic river now acts as a massive conveyor belt for rubbish, carrying between 3,000 and 4,700 tons of large garbage into the North Sea every single year.
How could such a vast amount of waste have been missed? The answer lies in a revolutionary new research method. For an entire year, researchers worked with local citizen scientists to operate a special floating device called a litter trap. This device filtered (过滤) water from the surface down to 80 centimeters deep. Unlike older methods that relied on brief visual surveys, this long-term physical collection recorded the true, disorganized flow of garbage. The data showed enormous changes, with the amount of rubbish collected in a two-week period varying wildly from as few as 67 pieces to over 2,700, accounting for why short-term observations failed to get the full picture.
The collected garbage tells a clear story about its origins. Detailed analysis showed that while plastic items made up about 70% of all pieces, they were mostly lightweight, only 15% of the total weight. More importantly, over 56% of all rubbish was linked directly to the choices of individual consumers, with items like food wrappers and beverage (饮料) bottles being most common. Specific activities also left their mark, with litter from fireworks making up 10.7% of the total and tobacco-related waste like cigarette butts contributing another 6.5%.
This year-long project, powered in part by dedicated volunteers, proves that long-term, hands-on monitoring is essential to measure environmental challenges accurately. It provides a powerful model for how communities and scientists can work together to gather the evidence needed for action. The Rhine’s story is no longer just about its scenic beauty or economic importance; it is an urgent call to address the tide of waste our modern lifestyle creates, before it all washes out to sea.
8. What is the main finding of the 2026 study on the Rhine River?

Despite decades of medical advances, detecting health-related molecule (分子) still relies on bodily liquids like blood, requiring blood draws from most patients, especially people with diabetes who need frequent finger blood tests. However, researchers from the University of Chicago have developed a lightweight device named ABLE, which collects and detects molecules in the air. This 4×8-inch device is a potential game-changer for medicine and public health.
Detecting molecules in the air has long fallen behind liquid detection, mainly because target particles (微粒) are extremely rare — there may be only one in a trillion. To solve this problem, the team turned air into liquid. The device draws in air, adds water vapor with a humidifier, and cools it to turn air into small drops. These drops trap particles and slide into a small container, making detection easy with common tools used for liquid analysis.
Early tests proved its effectiveness. It caught easily evaporated (挥发的) coffee vapor, detected glucose in breath, identified E. coli in the air, and found signs of inflammation (炎症) in mice with unhealthy gut bacteria. Obviously, it solved the problem of collecting molecules that evaporate easily — a major worry during the device’s development.
The device was first inspired by the need for painless tests for early-born babies in ICUs. These fragile babies are likely to have health problems, and repeated blood tests may put them in danger. Doctors hope the device can track health signs without taking blood, protecting these high-risk patients. It also shows promise for diagnosing inflammatory bowel disease, though the related breath signs first need to be recorded. The team plans to improve and make it smaller to create a wearable device for daily use.
Besides medical uses, this achievement may open the door to new physics research on air impurities and state changes of matter. As a new tool for detecting air chemistry, ABLE fills the space between air and liquid molecule analysis, creating possibilities for various new developments in healthcare and science.
12. Why did the researchers develop ABLE?
A. To change medicine and public health.
B. To identify health molecules without liquid.
C. To reduce finger blood checks for patients with diabetes.
D. To take the place of blood tests in hospitals.
13. What can we infer about ABLE?
A. It is small and wearable for daily use.
B. It diagnoses inflammatory bowel disease easily.
C. It has proved useful for newly born babies.
D. It has overcome a key technical challenge.
14. Who will least likely benefit from ABLE?
A. A chemist. B. A physician. C. A psychologist. D. A physicist.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. A Tool for Bodily Liquid Analysis.
B. A Tool for Airborne Particle Counting.
C. A Device for Modern Physics Research.
D. A Device for Air Molecule Detection.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. D
【解析】

【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“However, researchers from the University of Chicago have developed a lightweight device named ABLE, which collects and detects molecules in the air.(然而,芝加哥大学的研究人员开发了一种名为ABLE的轻便设备,用于收集和检测空气中的分子)”可知,研究人员开发ABLE是为了在不使用液体的情况下识别健康分子。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Early tests proved its effectiveness. It caught easily evaporated (挥发的) coffee vapor, detected glucose in breath, identified E. coli in the air, and found signs of inflammation (炎症) in mice with unhealthy gut bacteria. Obviously, it solved the problem of collecting molecules that evaporate easily — a major worry during the device’s development.(早期测试证明了它的有效性。它能捕捉到容易挥发的咖啡蒸气,检测呼气中的葡萄糖,识别空气中的大肠杆菌,并在肠道细菌不健康的小鼠体内发现炎症迹象。显然,它解决了收集容易蒸发的分子的问题——这是设备开发过程中一个主要担忧)”可推断,ABLE已经克服了一个关键的技术挑战。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Besides medical uses, this achievement may open the door to new physics research on air impurities and state changes of matter.(除了医学用途外,这一成就可能为空气杂质和物质状态变化的物理学研究打开大门)”可知,ABLE对化学家、医生和物理学家都有益处,而心理学家研究的是人的心理现象和行为,与ABLE的用途不相关,因此心理学家不太可能从ABLE中受益。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“However, researchers from the University of Chicago have developed a lightweight device named ABLE, which collects and detects molecules in the air. This 4×8-inch device is a potential game-changer for medicine and public health.(然而,芝加哥大学的研究人员开发了一种名为ABLE的轻便设备,用于收集和检测空气中的分子。这款4×8英寸的设备有可能改变医学和公共卫生的游戏规则)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了一种名为ABLE的轻便设备,用于空气中分子的检测,因此D选项“一种用于空气分子检测的设备”最符合文章主旨,适合作为标题。

阅读下面短文,从选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。有两项为多余选项。
The Lost Art of Eye Contact
If the title of this article caught your eye, that’s a good start — it might even help you reflect on where your eyes typically focus and where they don’t. ____16____The alerts and endless digital noise have shifted our gaze (凝视) away from the eyes of others and toward our devices.
But devices are only one of the challenges surrounding this lost art. Let’s examine the very term we use: “eye contact”. This phrase frames eye contact as a static (静态的) object, something we either “have” or “don’t”. ____17____ It fails to recognize eye contact as a dynamic and interactive process that requires intention and awareness.
____18____ Great artists use all their senses to absorb information and deepen their connection with their environment. Similarly, your eyes offer you a powerful way to connect more deeply and vividly with those around you. Is it really that simple? Yes! Eye contact is the result of trying to actively engage in communication — both understanding and being understood. But in practice, it is far from simple sometimes. It's easy to have great eye contact when you’re completely at ease. But when you’re feeling self-conscious (不自在的), simply trying to focus on the other person may not be enough. ____19____
Try an exercise called “Silent Storytelling”. You’ll tell a story but without sound. Recruit a friend or two and use your eyes, face, hands, and body to convey your message. Pay close attention to your audience’s reactions — raised eyebrows, widening eyes, or nodding. ____20____ What you’ll discover is that “good eye contact” comes naturally when you need to assess their understanding without the help of sound. Gradually, through repeated practice, you can master the art of eye contact.
A. This view oversimplifies the concept.
B. This reflects a shift from face-to-face engagement.
C. Instead, we should consider eye contact as an art form.
D. The key point of interaction is emphasized accordingly.
E. These signals will indicate whether they’re following along.
F. Eye contact is becoming increasingly rare in our lives in the digital time.
G. Thus, it is high time you needed effective practice to regain this lost social skill.
【答案】16. F 17. A 18. C 19. G 20. E

【答案】Dear David,
Learning that you show enormous interest in Chinese characters, I’m writing to give you a brief introduction to the Chinese writing system, which might help you gain a glimpse into the rich Chinese culture.
The Chinese writing system dates back over 5000 years and has evolved alongside the development of our culture, transforming from an originally picture-based language carved on bones to the current state you see now, evolving from oracle Bone script to today’s Regular script. As a bridge for cultural exchanges, Chinese characters have promoted mutual understanding between countries as China performs an increasingly influential role in global affairs. This is bound to boost cross-cultural integration and open up new horizons.
Wish you a fruitful exploration of Chinese culture.
Yours,
Li Hua

Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do — mine was Mrs White.
I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. I would bring back what I wrote, and she would look at it and see that there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections. And always a star. Sometimes even a “Good!” was scrawled (潦草地写), which would make my heart soar with happiness. But it worried my mother, so one day when she went in to meet Mrs White for one of those Parent-Teacher meetings, she asked her why she never corrected my mistakes.
And my mother said Mrs White said — The children are just beginning to get excited about using words, about forming sentences. I don’t want to dampen that enthusiasm with red ink. Spelling and grammar can wait. The wonder of words won’t ... And what my mother gave me was the gist of what she could remember. The rest I added in. Because I grew up learning to use words with loving confidence like that.
And it occurs to me that if Mrs White had used her red pen more precisely, I probably wouldn’t be telling you about this now. I look back now and think she must have been a rather extraordinary teacher — to exercise such red-pen-restraint. To allow the joy, wonder and excitement of expression flower — however faultily — like that. Because to bloom is better than not to bloom. And a bud once nipped (掐) never opens. May we all be so kind ...
I used to misspell “beautiful” a lot. I never could quite remember that the e went before the a. It exasperated (使气愤) my teacher in high school no end. Eventually the e’s and a’s settled into their right places of their own accord. I’m glad I didn’t wait on them though.

【答案】范文
Thirty years later, I attended a local education seminar as a famous writer. As I walked into the venue, a familiar figure caught my eye — an elderly lady whom I recognized immediately as Mrs White. My heart raced with excitement. I approached her tentatively, and when she turned around, those warm eyes lit up with recognition. “Li Hua? Is that really you?” she asked softly. I nodded eagerly, introducing myself as the little girl who used to misspell “beautiful” as “baeutiful” but never lost her love for writing, all thanks to her.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I hugged Mrs White tightly. I told her how her red-pen-restraint had shaped my life, allowing me to express freely without fear of mistakes. She smiled gently, patting my back. “I always knew you’ d make good use of words,” she said. “Spelling can be fixed, but passion can’t be restored once crushed.” Before we parted, I handed her a copy of my latest book, inscribed with “To Mrs White — Thank you for letting my words bloom.” As I watched her leave, I realized her kindness wasn’t just a memory; it was a gift that had kept on giving.

A. It has a vital status in history.
B. It flows into the North Sea every year.
C. It becomes a carrier of massive rubbish.
D. It loses the role as a waterway for ecology.
9. Which of the following contributed to old methods’ failure?
A. Not involving local volunteers.
B. Lacking recorded data of advanced tools.
C. Only collecting water from the surface.
D. Missing dramatic changes in short surveys.
10. What can we learn from the figures in paragraph 3?
A. Fireworks were the most polluted activity.
B. Smoking had little effect on the environment.
C. Most rubbish came from personal consumption.
D. Plastics made up most of the weight.
11. What is the primary purpose of the passage?
A. To analyse origins of river garbage.
B. To emphasize pollution and urge action.
C. To explain a new method to clear rubbish.
D. To praise the project led by volunteers.
D
