In the fall of 2012, Ken Liu received an offer from a Chinese company, which was seeking an English translator for a sci-fi novel titled The Three-Body Problem. Ken was a natural choice: familiar with both the Chinese and English sci-fi wording and culture. But The Three-Body Problem was unlike anything Ken had ever read. A mind-bending story was full of heady technical passages about physics theory, mixed with profound moral questions and humanity’s place in the universe. So capturing the novel in all its complexity seemed discouraging.
When the English translation of The Three-Body Problem was published, it was described as a groundbreaking work of speculative fiction(推理小说). Liu Cixin, the author of the original work said, “Usually when Chinese literature gets translated into a foreign language, it tends to lose something. But I don’t think that happened to The Three-Body Problem. I think it gained something.”
Ken was born in Lanzhou, Gansu province. He was a bookworm. Books provided him with a refuge when he moved to Calif. and couldn’t speak English at the age of 11. After graduation from Harvard, he was a computer programmer, then a corporate lawyer, and later a sci-fi writer. Throughout his shifting professional journey, Ken wrote fiction continuously. Eventually, one of his works won three big awards.
Ken never set out to be a translator, but a Chinese writer discovered Ken. Chen Qiufan liked reading Ken’s short stories online and kept in touch with Ken. One day, he asked Ken for his opinion on an English translation of one of his stories, which was from a translation company. Ken wasn’t impressed and offered to edit it, but ended up redoing the translation from scratch. Chen was completely moved by Ken’s spirit.
Ken’s approach to translation is unorthodox(非正统的). Strict loyalty to the source material is not his chief goal, nor is producing a smooth, Americanized version. “It’s not a word-by-word recreation,” he said. “It’s about how I show the overall effect.” Rather than ignoring cultural and spoken differences that would be lost on most Western readers, he tries to stress them.
4. Which of the following best describes Ken’s translation task?
A. Vital. B. Demanding. C. Urgent. D. Innovative.
5. What life lesson can match Ken’s experience?
A. All life is an experiment. B. Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.
C. Persistence will be eventually rewarded. D. Unintentional actions bring unexpected surprises.
6. What quality of Ken impressed Chen Qiufan most?
A. His enthusiasm for writing. B. His effort for excellence.
C. His curiosity about editing work. D. His critical comments on others’ works.
7. What is Ken’s translation style like?
A. It follows the book accurately. B. It highlights cultural differences.
C. It allows for the loss of something. D. It focuses on the fluency of language.
C
We hear them daily, whether it’s ‘your eyes are bigger than your stomach’ from your mom or ‘words fail me’ for something amazing. These colorful gems (宝石), idioms with meanings that can’t be inferred from individual words, are important to help “spice up” our daily conversations.
Everyone occasionally struggles to find the right words to express themselves. For example, when a person needs a better way to say that something is expensive, he might hesitate, searching through the empty files of their brain for something, and come up empty-handed. He ends up saying that, “The new car costs too much.” This is fine, but perhaps ‘costs an arm and a leg’ would have been more effective.
One of the idioms I distinctly remember is ‘keep your shirt on’. It happened in the second grade during a group project. When I complained about the moody girl’s lack of cooperation, she got angry. I told her to ‘keep her shirt on’, which she misunderstood and reported to our teacher. She was unaware of the idiom’s meaning, which I found unreasonable. This idiom actually originates from the 19th century, when men’s shirts needed to be taken off before arguing or fighting. “Keep the shirts on” could be used to prevent any further tension.
Another two idioms are also worth mentioning. Imagine you have a deadline for a five-page essay that you haven’t ‘gotten the ball rolling’. You might say you’re ‘in a pickle’, an idiom for a difficult situation with no obvious solution. Now, consider that same issue with the essay. You’ve barely started, and it’s evident you won’t meet the deadline. Rather than worrying, you look for a positive aspect, hoping to find a ‘silver lining’ in this mess. The idiom ‘every cloud has a silver lining’ expresses this feeling.
Idioms are crucial for communication in music, literature, or just in everyday conversations. Beyond this, these figures of speech are vital to understand what others mean if they use them. Educating ourselves about idioms will also allow us to add emphasis on subjects we talk about. In addition to my own experiences, it is high time that we learned about idioms.
8. What do we know about idioms from the first two paragraphs?
A. Idioms make conversations more demanding.
B. Idioms are challenging to recall from our minds.
C. Idioms are easy to perceive from separate words.
D. Idioms add flavor and efficiency to communication.
9. What does the author’s story imply in Paragraph 3?
A. The girl was unreasonable for reporting.
B. Teachers are supposed to know all the idioms.
C. Idioms can cause confusion in a group project.
D. Understanding idioms prevents misunderstandings.
10. If you want to strengthen optimism in a bad situation, which idiom is appropriate?
A. ‘in a pickle’ B. ‘keep your shirt on’
C. ‘every cloud has a silver lining’ D. ‘your eyes are bigger than your stomach’
11. What does the author focus on in the last paragraph?
A. Appealing for actions. B. Offering advice.
C. Pushing literal speech. D. Applying idioms to arts.
D
To the delight of bookworms, anyone who has ever told you burying your head in a book means you’re being unsociable will have to cat their wards. A new study suggests those who regularly read, especially fiction, are actually nicer and more empathetic(善解人意)people.
The study, carried out by Kingston University London, and presented at the British Psychological Society conference in Brighton, UK, last week, also found that those who just watched television seemed to be less kind and understanding of other people.
For the study, the researchers questioned 123 people on their preferences for books.TV shows, and plays. They were also quizzed about the type of entertainment they preferred from comedy or romance to drama. Then they were tested on their interpersonal skills. The researchers asked them about their behavior towards others, whether they understood and respected others’ points of view, and whether they actively belted other people.
Drawing on these responses sheet, the researchers found some mind-boggling results. They discovered that those who read more showed greater positive social behavior and a better ability to empathize with others, while those who preferred watching TV didn’t show the same ability to empathize and were more likely to show unsociable behavior.
They also found the forms of fiction people preferred were linked to their interpersonal skills and behavior. Those who preferred fiction displayed the most positive social skills. Romance and drama lovers showed the ability to see others’ points of view, while comedy fans were particularly. Able to relate to others the most.
The researchers concluded that those who read fiction regularly are more well-adapted to see things from other people’s points of view, which makes them better at understanding people. However, they do acknowledge that their study didn’t conclude if the effects are causal-does reading make you nicer and more empathetic, or do more empathetic people tend to read fiction? Even so. picking up a book can’t hurt, and might just make the world a nicer place.
12. How did the researchers conduct the research?
A. By making questionnaire surveys. B. By comparing experiment statistics.
C. By observing participants’ behaviors. D. By referring to previous study reports.
13. What does the underlined word “mind-boggling” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Embarrassing. B. Rewarding. C. Amazing. D. Disappointing.
14. What can improve people’s empathetic abilities the most according to the study?
A. Reading fiction and comedy. B. Enjoying romance and drama.
C. Taking part in social activities. D. Watching plays on social media.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. All people support the research result. B. Further study is needed on this subject.
C. The nicer and kinder people like reading. D. Reading can help people make more friends.

Joey sat at the kitchen table, reading the sports page of the morning paper. He heard his grand-father coming down the stairs. When his grandfather came into the kitchen, Joey could see he wasn’t his usual happy self.
“Morning, Grandfather,” he said. His grandfather sat across the table and didn’t pick up the paper to read. Instead, he asked, “Joey, is anything happening in town today?”
“There’s a ball game between Doraville Middle School and my school tonight,” Joey told him. “It’ll be a close race, but I think we’ll win. Would you like to go?”
Joey felt bad for his grandfather. He knew he couldn’t read. His grandfather had told him of-ten, “I didn’t have the chance to go to school regularly. Looking after the animals and tending to the crops on the farm were much more important in those days than learning to read.”
One day, Joey stopped at the library to look through some books. He saw a sign on the library wall. It read: “Do you know somebody who doesn’t read? We can help. Just call this number.” Joey hurried home and showed the sign to his grandfather. “Somebody can teach you how to read. It says so right here,” Joey explained. Joey jotted the number down.
Several days later, Grandfather put on his best suit of clothes for his first day of school. He arrived at the library an hour early and met with his teacher. During that first class, he was so worried and nervous that he couldn’t concentrate. He couldn’t remember anything the teacher said. A few weeks later, Grandfather was studying when he looked up at Joey and said, “I’m too old to learn all of this.” He closed the book in frustration. “Oh, Grandfather, don’t get discouraged,” Joey said. Grandfather was stubborn. “I can’t do it,” he said.

So capturing the novel in all its complexity seemed discouraging.( 一个令人费解的故事充满了关于物理理论的令人兴奋的技术段落,夹杂着深刻的道德问题和人类在宇宙中的地位。因此,捕捉这部复杂的小说似乎令人沮丧。)”可知,这本科幻小说的翻译难度很大,要求很高,故选B项。

【答案】8. D 9. D 10. C 11. A

【答案】12. A 13. C 14. A 15. B

The bravest choice I have ever made was to join the school English speech contest last year. Because I had always struggled with speaking in public, especially in a foreign language, the decision didn’t come easily.
For weeks, I practiced every day after school — first in front of a mirror, then with a few friends. There were many times when I wanted to quit, but something inside me kept pushing me to continue. Although I didn’t win a prize, the applause I received felt like a personal victory.
This experience taught me that courage isn’t about being fearless, but about persevering despite fear.
