A heartwarming video about a service dog named Zern has gone popular on social media, touching millions of people around the world. The video tells the story of Ed Crane, a man living with epilepsy (癫痫), and how his loyal dog Zern has changed his life completely.
Epilepsy is a serious disease that causes a person to have sudden, violent and uncontrollable body movements. Before an epileptic attack happens, the human body gives off a special smell that ordinary people cannot detect. The wild Indian Ocean is filled with sudden storms, 8-meter-high huge waves and changeable ocean currents (洋流). It is widely seen as one of the most dangerous places on Earth.
Yet Liu Yong, a Chinese explorer and professor from Sichuan Tourism University, chose to challenge its power. For him, exploration means both brave adventure and careful scientific research. It was not his first fight against the open sea. Back in 2023, Liu Yong crossed the Atlantic Ocean with French partners. The 54-day journey was full of setbacks: strong headwinds, big waves and nearly one month of serious seasickness. He even faced the risk of boat turning over right before reaching the land. Still, he recorded detailed research notes all the way.
In May 2025, Liu started a harder journey across the Indian Ocean with three European explorers. Trouble hit them very early. On just the 10th day, wild waves destroyed two rudders (船舵), and Liu was suddenly thrown into the rough sea. Besides broken equipment, they suffered from 32-knot strong winds and serious body pain. Liu’s hands were full of wounds and he caught painful eczema (湿疹). They rowed 12 hours a day and slept only 3 to 4 hours each night.
Though in great pain and danger, the team never lost hope. After 65 days of hard work, they arrived in Africa 15 days earlier than planned. During the whole trip, Liu used voice recordings to collect over 300,000 words of data like human behaviors and plastic pollution in the Indian Ocean.
