When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园)on the hill.At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill (半山腰).Even though they worked so hard, the production of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about our difficulties, and later, a canal project (灌溉工程)began to be built in my village.“Who are they?” I asked.“They are good men from our government,” Grandma replied.
Then, I moved to a city for my middle school.During one summer holiday, I came back to my hometown with my parents. When we arrived there, we were astonished because everything changed. We saw the canal run through every orchard. And my grandma told us that after the canal project was completed, villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill to a carry water anymore. And more and more people started planting fruit and the production increased a lot.

The day I heard that the Bright Bookstore was closing, I was upset. The bookstore had been in the neighbourhood for 50 years, and it was a great place where people could know each other through their love of books.
When I met Old Tim, the store’s owner, he said it was difficult to run a traditional bookstore in the digital age. Most young people preferred reading e-books and more people bought books online.
As Tim spoke, childhood memories came back to me.A group of us kids used to visit the store, spending hours reading there or just talking with Tim.Tim encouraged us to share our ideas by writing them on a large board.
A few months later, I was back and was surprised to see that the Bright Bookstore was still open for business. It was still old, but inside it was like a different world. In an area, a book reading was going on.Nearby, some readers were sharing their ideas on a screen instead of the large board. Some were reading on computers. It even had a coffee shop selling nice food.
Tim told me there were more community events in the coffee shop such as book readings, concerts and movie nights.Clearly, the Bright Bookstore had found new, creative ways to bring itself into a new life.It had changed into a vibrant space.
“Well, as you can see, technology and creativity have brought my old bookstore into the 21st century! I’m so glad to see that everything I wanted it to offer to the community is still here,” Tim said with a smile.
No matter how times change, there are always people who love reading. With the development of technology, traditional bookstores must also change in creative ways.
