Even though it’s been more than 30 years, Brendan Slocumb still feels the heartbreak over his stolen violin.
In his senior year of high school, Slocumb’s family found their home broken into after a trip abroad. Slocumb, who had been playing the violin since he was nine, went immediately to the hiding spot under his bed. “I looked. My instrument was gone. I looked again. It was gone,” he said.
The stolen violin is one of many life experiences Slocumb drew upon to write his book, The Violin Conspiracy. It tells the story of Ray McMillan, a gifted violinist whose family violin is stolen just before one of the worldclass music competitions. For both Slocumb and his character Ray, the violin was a means to get away from a difficult childhood and ticket to college and a promising job. After graduating from high school with a degree in music education, Slocumb has taught music to students from primary through high school for more than 20 years.
Writing the book was a chance to celebrate Slocumb’s success and honour the people who helped him along the way. In the book, Ray’s grandma Nora — his first supporter — is named after Slocumb’s grandmother. And Ray’s mentor (导师) Janice is based on Dr. Rachel Vetter Huang, Slocumb’s college teacher, whom he calls a “lifesaving force”.
The Violin Conspiracy has been praised for its lively descriptions. After it came on the market in 2022, thousands poured into Slocumb’s head from many Black musicians who said “this is a story that I’ve been carrying along as well. I experienced the same things Ray has gone through in the story, and no one would believe me. Now it’s out there in the world to see.”
24. What can be learned about Slocumb’s stolen violin?

Has your mom or dad ever posted a photo of you on social media that you don’t want anyone outside your family to see? In an age where people regularly share personal information on websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, many parents post photos of their children on a regular basis. On average, a parent will post almost 1,000 photos of a child online before the children turns 5, according to a survey.

Most parents don’t consult their children for permission before posting photos of them. They feel it is not necessary to consult the children first because the benefits outweigh (比……更重要) any possible risks.
Other parents and child experts believe that children older than age 6 should be consulted. They say that the photos can stay online for many years and that children should have some control over their online presence. Devorah Heitner is an author who runs workshops about children and digital world. She believes that parents should set their children’s consent before posting their photos. “It teaches your child that his or her image is his or her own,” she said. “It helps their recognize that sharing is a choice and that some things are private.”

The family, wing length and wing color of tropical butterflies all influence their ability to stand up to rising temperatures, say researchers at the University of Cambridge. They believe this could help identify species whose survival is under threat from climate change.
Butterflies use two strategies to fight against changing air temperatures: thermal buffering (热缓冲) — adaptive behavior like flying to a shaded area to maintain a steady body temperature, and thermal tolerance — dependence on physiological (生理学的) mechanism to prevent overheating. Both of these strategies are needed to deal with climate change. However, deforestation leading to a potential lack of forest cover means tropical butterflies may have to rely on physiological method.
Researchers cooperated with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) to study the thermoregulation (体温调节) strategies of tropical butterflies. To assess thermal buffering abilities, scientists collected data from multiple habitats in Panama. Equipped with handheld nets, they took the temperature of over 1,000 butterflies and compared each of that to the surrounding air. To assess thermal tolerance, at STRI Gambas facility, a new butterflies were placed in a glass bottle within a water bath with a steadily increasing temperature.
The results showed that butterflies with large wings tended to have higher thermal buffering ability, but a lower thermal tolerance. Butterflies with dark wings were found to tolerate heat better than those with pale wings. The Lycaenidae—the family with small, bright wings had the poorest thermal buffering and thermal tolerance abilities.
Lead author Eshe Jepson said, “As temperatures continue to rise, and forests get smaller and further apart because of deforestation, butterflies which rely on their surroundings to avoid high temperatures may not be able to travel between forests, or deal with increasingly common heatwaves.” If temperatures continue to rise alongside deforestation and loss of cool microclimates, there is a very real threat that we could lose many species in this family.
32. What might be the main focus of the research?
A. Survival strategies of atrisk butterflies.
B. Factors in butterflies’ abilities to tolerate heat.
C. Butterfly species endangered by warming.
D. Physical characteristics of tropical butterflies.
33. What can be learned about the thermoregulation strategies?
A. Thermal buffering isn’t always possible to use.
B. Thermal tolerance tends to be more effective.
C. Thermal tolerance isn’t limited by surroundings.
D. Thermal buffering interacts with thermal tolerance.
34. How did the researchers reach their conclusions?
A. By comparing 1,000 different species.
B. By doing smallscale waterbath trials.
C. By referring to collected data of STRI.
D. By combining field and lab experiments.
35. What do the researchers find?
A. The palerwinged tolerate higher temperature.
B. Smaller butterflies have lower thermal tolerance.
C. Darker butterflies are hardest hit by heatwaves.
D. The largerwinged stabilize body temperature better.

After a long and tiring workday, Mike fell onto the sofa. His body ached all over, and his stomach made loud noises, reminding him it was time to eat. With a tired sigh, he picked up his phone and ordered his favorite Kung Pao Chicken from his usual restaurant. He thought his food would arrive in about 30 minutes and that he would feel better soon.
But over 40 minutes passed, and there was still no sign of food. Mike looked unhappy and kept drumming his fingers on the arm of the sofa. He checked the food delivery app and got angrier when he saw that it still said “Preparing your order”. Therefore, he called the restaurant right away.
“Hello, I ordered my food more than 40 minutes ago,” Mike said angrily as soon as someone answered the phone. “When will it be here?”
“I’m really sorry, sir,” a worried voice replied. “Something unexpected happened. We’ll deliver your food as soon as possible.” On the phone, Mike heard chaotic (杂乱的) noises—shouting, hurried footsteps, and even what sounded like an ambulance siren (汽笛).
Half an hour later, the food finally arrived. Mike took the bag and shut the door hard, without giving the delivery man a chance to explain. Then he left a onestar review, sharing his terrible experience with everyone.
The next morning, Mike saw a message from the restaurant owner right under his review. The owner wrote, “Dear customer, we’re very sorry for the delay. An emergency occurred at our restaurant last night. We had to deal with it, so we couldn’t deliver your meal on time. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, and we’d like to offer you a free meal.”
Mike didn’t believe the restaurant owner at all. He thought the owner was just lying in an attempt to get him to remove the negative review. He rejected the owner’s offer and replied that lies wouldn’t help his business.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为 150 个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式作答。
Unexpectedly, Mike saw a video of what happened at the restaurant that night on social media.

读后续写(参考范文)
Unexpectedly, Mike saw a video of what happened at the restaurant that night on social media. In the video, a customer suddenly fell down while eating. The restaurant owner rushed to help and immediately called an ambulance. While waiting for the ambulance, the owner kept talking to the customer, trying to keep him conscious. When the ambulance arrived, the staff carefully carried the customer to the ambulance. Other people at the restaurant filmed the incident and posted it online. After watching the video, Mike realized he was wrong about the owner.
Mike decided to go to the restaurant to apologize to the owner. When he got there, he said with awkward sincerity, “I was wrong. I’m really sorry.” Then he removed his negative review from the food delivery app and shared the owner’s story in detail. Many people read the story and were moved by the owner’s kindness. The restaurant’s business even got better. Mike learned that it’s important to understand others before judging them.
