There is a shepherd(牧羊人) boy who looks after sheep for all the people in the village where he lives. Every morning, he collects sheep from their owners and drives them onto the hills to graze(吃草). Every evening, he rounds them up carefully and brings them back. Sometimes the boy feels bored because he has nothing to do but watch the sheep eat grass all day.
One day he wants to play a trick. He cries loudly, “Wolf! Wolf!”
Hearing him shout, the villagers run quickly to help him drive away the wolf. However, when they reach him, there is no wolf to be seen.
The boy thinks it is very funny. “You aren’t quick enough,” he says to them. “The wolf has run away.”
A few days later, he shouts “Wolf!” again. Again, the villagers come to help him, and again he says, “You aren’t quick enough. The wolf has run away.” The angry villagers go back to their work in the village.
Then, late one winter evening, just as the boy is thinking of gathering the sheep together to take them home, a wolf really comes. The boy is very afraid. The wolf looks very big in the half darkness and he only has his crook(曲柄杖) in his hand. He shouts, “Wolf! Wolf! A wolf is taking the sheep!”
This time, however, the villagers do not come to help him drive away the wolf. They say, “He has played that trick too often.”
Before the boy can find anyone to help him, the wolf has killed all the sheep.

In the Han Dynasty, there was a young boy called Kuang Heng. He was born into a poor family. He liked reading books very much. He needed to work during daytime, so he had to read books at night. But he was too poor to buy a candle.
One day, he found his neighbour had candles, but the light couldn’t go through the wall into his room. So he dug a small hole in the wall so that he could use the light to read books. From that day on, he read books every night until the light went out.
However, he finished reading all his books and there were no books for him to read. Then he went to a rich man’s house and worked for him without asking for money. The rich man asked, “Why don’t you want the money?” Kuang Heng said, “Because I only want to borrow books from you.” The rich man agreed. Kuang Heng read the books one by one.
