The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., a nonprofit that honors leaders who have overcome adversity and supports young people in furthering their education, announced that Eileen Collins, retired U. S. Air Force Colonel and Former Space Shuttle (航天飞机) Commander at NASA, will receive the famous Horatio Alger Award and become a lifetime member of the organization.
Collins was born in Elmira, New York, in a household that faced financial hardship and instability. Despite these challenges, she developed an early fascination with aviation (航空) and space, and a dream of becoming a pilot.
After earning an associate’s degree from Corning Community College, Collins earned her bachelor’s in mathematics and economics at Syracuse University, where she joined the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps during her junior year. She continued her education with master’s degrees from Stanford University and Webster University. Collins was the first woman to earn pilot’s licenses at Vance Air Force Base.
Her distinguished career with NASA included commanding the first space shuttle mission following the Columbia disaster. Over the course of her career, she accumulated (积累) 6,751 hours in 30 different types of aircraft and spent 872 hours in space.
“As a child, I dreamed of becoming a great explorer, admiring the pilots and astronauts who came before me. Those dreams, which once seemed impossible, taught me the value of determination, and the courage to keep moving forward in the face of hardship,” said Eileen Collins.
Beyond her groundbreaking career, Collins is deeply committed to charity and mentorship (辅导). She served on the Astronaut Memorial Foundation Board of Directors for nine years and remains on its Board of Advisors. She also supports the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation and has used her career and experience to be a positive example for women entering male-dominated fields.

In an attempt to study soil health, a group of scientists from Australia’s Flinders University planted microphones (扩音器) in the ground to see if the acoustics (声学) of ants and worms would be a solid indicator of biodiversity.
“It’s a bit like going to the doctor,” ecologıst Jake Robinson told The Guardian. “They put a stethoscope (听诊器) on your chest, take a health check, listen to your beating heart. ... We’re doing something similar in the soil.”
Since the sounds created by the tiny living animals in the soil are barely hearable to the human ear, the researchers set up microphones that picked up vibrations from contact with the dirt and then made them louder.
Land in Adelaide Hills in South Australia was filled with plants and tiny animals. It was also home to diverse “invertebrate (无脊椎动物) instrumentals,” creating a soil symphony of crackles, pops, and clicks. But unhealthy soil only made dull white noise, according to the research. Because insects and other invertebrates build up soils and improve their nutrient content, their presence underground indicates whether the soil is healthy.
“It’s clear acoustic complexity and diversity of our samples are associated with soil invertebrate plentifulness — from earthworms, beetles to ants and spiders — and it seems to be a clear reflection of soil health,” Robinson said in a statement for the university. “This technology holds promise in addressing the global need for more effective soil biodiversity monitoring methods to protect our planet’s most diverse ecosystems.”
Until now, traditional methods of studying soil health have included costly DNA tests, or damaging traps and digging to identify these music-makers. But the acoustic method could pave the way for researchers, conservationists, and farmers to detect — and fix — soil degradation (恶化) with ease.
“Restoring and monitoring soil biodiversity has never been more important,” Robinson added, sharing that an affordable “rock concert” might be available to more people soon. “We’re trying to popularize it, so everyone can just buy their own little recorder and microphone.”
28. What is the main purpose of the soil acoustic study?
A. To record interesting insect conversations.
B. To improve the traditional farming methods.
C. To find a new way to monitor ecosystem health.
D. To collect growth sounds of underground plants.
29. What can be an indicator of healthy soil?
A. High in water content. B. The presence of plentiful insects.
C. Strong resistance to pests. D. The production of dull white noise.
30. What is a characteristic of the acoustic method?
A. High efficiency. B. Zero cost.
C. Stable operation. D. Strong systematicness.
31. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Problems of traditional soil tests. B. Urgent need for soil restoration.
C. Revolution in rock concert. D. The prospect of acoustic method.
D
A recent study has revealed an uplifting connection between grandparents and their cognitive (认知) well-being. Lead researcher Chereches expressed the interest surrounding this vital question: “Many grandparents provide regular care for their grandchildren, but an open question is whether caregiving for grandchildren may also benefit grandparents themselves.” This research aimed to explore the potential health advantages for grandparents who dedicate time to their grandchildren, particularly in decelerating cognitıve decline.
Chereches and her team analyzed data from 2,887 grandparents in England. Participants answered survey questions and underwent cognitive assessments three times from 2016 to 2022. The survey inquired about the frequency of their caregiving — whether they were spending nights with grandchildren, caring for them during illness, engaging in play, assısting with homework, or even preparing meals.
The results were heartening! Grandparents who actively participated in childcare, regardless of how often or in what capacity, performed better in memory and verbal fluency tests compared to those who did not engage in caregiving. Excitingly, grandmothers who provided care displayed a slower decline in cognitive performance throughout the study.
“What stood out most to us was that being a caregiving grandparent seemed to matter more for cognitive functioning than how often grandparents provided care or what exactly they did with their grandchildren,” Chereches noted. This suggests that the joy and experience of being involved in caregiving may be more beneficial than the specifics of the activities undertaken.
Age UK has highlighted the immense benefits of this so-called “gran-nannying,” which keeps older adults mentally and physically active while combating loneliness — as long as the caregıvıng experience remaıns enjoyable and fulfilling.
This research illuminates the beautiful cycle of care and connection that exists within families, proving that the act of being a grandparent not only enriches the lives of grandchildren but also enhances the lives of grandparents, fostering happiness and vitality in their golden years. Let’s share this wonderful news, encouraging families to embrace the joys of grandparenting!
32. Which can replace the underlined word “decelerating” in paragraph 1?
A. Facilitating. B. Slowing. C. Examınıng. D. Anticipating.
33. How did the study gather information from the grandparents?
A. By conducting single interviews. B. By directly observing their caregiving.
C. By analysing long-term health records. D. By surveying and assessing repeatedly.
34. What does the author want to emphasize in paragraph 4?
A. Engagement matters more than details. B. Frequency has a decisive role.
C. Specific activities make a difference. D. Emotional joy is more lasting.
35. What could be a suitable title for the text?
A. Grandparents: Best Caregivers for Kids
B. How to Improve Grandparents’ Well-being
C. Childcare Keeps Grandparents’ Minds Sharp
D. The Rising Trend of Grandparent Caregiving
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In today’s workplace, the role of a manager is more complex than ever. Leaders are navigating a fast-changing economy, technological disruption (yes, AI really is reshaping the way we work), and evolving expectations about what it means to lead. At the same time, they are responsible for supporting teams of humans who are also feeling the weight of uncertainty and personal challenges. 36
But here’s the truth: perfection is impossible. Managers are human. 37 What truly defines great leadership is not a perfect record, but the way managers respond when things go wrong. So, what should a great leader do when they mess up?
Acknowledge it.
This is the foundation. Leaders must resist the instinct (本能) to deny responsibility or minimize the mistake… even when it wasn’t entirely theirs. 38 When team members see that it’s safe for the person in charge to admit mistakes, they’re far more likely to do the same, which cultivates a culture of openness and learning.
Apologize sincerely.
Many of us are conditioned to believe that apologizing signals weakness. 39 It demonstrates care, responsibility and respect for the people impacted by your actions. Apologizing for your role helps clear the air and paves the way for the team to move forward.
40
Leaders set the tone for reflective practice. When something goes wrong, be transparent (透明的) about what happened and what you’ll do differently next time. For bigger challenges, invite team members to reflect together. You might gain valuable insights and help deepen collective learning.
A. Share your learnings with the team.
B. Making mistakes us an unavoıdable thing.
C. What matters most is how you deal with them.
D. But it is essential for growth and trust-building.
E. In reality, a genuine apology is a powerful act of leadership.
F. Owning your part in a misstep promotes psychological safety.
G. It’s no wonder so many managers feel pressure to perform perfectly.

In a heartwarming tale of community spirit and kindness, Mo Riles from South Bend, Indiana, became the center of an uplifting story that transformed his life. His old Chevy (雪佛兰) Silverado, affectionately referred to as a “Franken-truck” due to its various dents (凹陷), buckled (扭曲的) bottom, and a funny look, had got quite a bit of attention in town.
People in the town couldn’t help but see the truck when it drove down the streets, and it often made them laugh or feel surprised. One diner customer said he couldn’t believe it, saying, “I thought it was AI and didn’t know if it was real,” while another talked about the truck’s condition, stating, “It’s unbelievable how the thing even moves.” The truck’s strange look led to many light jokes online, with comments like, “Where is the duct tape when you need it?” and “Looks like the Hulk smashed (猛击) it…” Even with the playful jokes, Mo didn’t give up, driving his truck without complaint, even when he was having health problems lately.
However, the story took a wonderful turn when Colin Crowel, the owner of Carguys Auto Detailing, came across a picture of Mo’s truck. Rather than joining in on the jokes, Colin felt a calling to help. “I just thought there’s gotta be something more to why this truck looks like this,” he said, realizing that Mo likely needed encouragement rather than humor. Colin launched a crowdfunding campaign, aiming to raise funds to provide Mo with a safer, more reliable vehicle.
In his heartfelt GoFundMe description, Colin wrote about the challenges Mo faced with his truck, highlighting its dangerous condition and the determination Mo showed in continuing to meet his daily responsibilities. “With the support of local businesses and neighbors, I believe we can make a real difference in Mo’s life,” Colin shared, emphasizing the power of community.
The response was nothing short of extraordinary. Contributions poured in from across northwest Indiana and beyond, with over 500 generous individuals coming together to raise more than $26,000 for Mo.

读后续写
Earlier this month, the transformation became a reality. Mo’s well-loved Franken-truck took its last drive to a local Chevy dealership, where Mo was met with a shiny, new Chevy Silverado. When he first saw the truck, he stopped for a minute, tears starting to fall, and he couldn’t say a word. The dealership workers also gave him a free oil change for a year and a new set of truck keys with a small gift. The moment showed just how kind and united the community was when they came together to help him.
Reflecting on this incredible experience, Mo felt full of thanks. “That’s the part that knocked me over,” he said, tears of joy in his eyes. Mo said he would never forget the kindness everyone showed him, and he hoped to pass that kindness on — he even planed to help a neighbor who was having car trouble, just like others helped him. He added that the new truck isn’t just a vehicle to him; it’s a sign of how much people care, and it gives him hope for the future.

W: Are you free this weekend? I was thinking of heading to the beach.
M: That sounds great!
W: I’ve never tried surfing before. Can you teach me?
M: Of course! We can rent a board and start with the basics.
W: I want to relax and take a sun bath. Is there a quiet spot you recommend?
M: The far end of the beach is usually less crowded. We can set up there.

M: I want to lose 20 pounds. How should I set my workout goals?
W: Break it down into smaller goals, like 4-5 pounds a month. Combine strength training and a balanced diet.
M: OK. Now I’m training for a marathon, hoping to lose some weight.
W: Consider getting a fitness tracker. It can help monitor your activities, heart rate, and even sleep patterns.
M: But I feel like I’m not seeing results fast enough.
W: It takes time. Remember, consistency is key. Celebrate small victories and consider working with a personal trainer for guidance and support.

W: How do you feel about your social life?
M: It’s a success. I usually join clubs. It is easy to connect with people who share my interests.
W: That’s good! I tend to make friends online. Many social apps help me find and join groups for my hobbies and meet like-minded people.
M: It’s very convenient. But I think the lack of physical contact in online friendship is a significant problem.
W: I agree. So we usually attend offline activities to meet each other in real life.
M: Nice! I prefer to have face-to-face communication. Nothing beats good conversations in person.
W: Yes! I’m not against online relationships, but I maintain that face-to-face interaction is essential for the initial creation of true friendship and connections.

M: I want to buy a new mobile phone. What would you recommend?
W: We sell several brands of smartphone now. This one has been on the market only ten days.
M: Can you introduce it in detail?
W: Okay. At first sight, with 6.5-inch large screen, it offers remarkable visual experience. Its camera can capture beautiful colors from nature.
M: Let me have a try. Yes, the pictures it takes are really vivid. How about the memory?
W: It ranges from 64GB to 512GB.
M: It sounds like just what I want. Could you tell me your after-sales service?
W: Of course. Within 7 days of your purchase, you can come to us to return or exchange it if there is something wrong with it except man-made damage.
M: OK. But I have no cash on me. May I pay by check or credit card?
W: We don’t accept check.
M: OK.
