Ryder was born with a physical disability and has never been able to walk. He started using a wheelchair when he was two years old. When he turned five, he started attending elementary school in June 2019, and every day had to be pushed to the end of the road to wait for his school bus by his parents, Tim and Nicaea. If the bus was running late, he had to wait outside for up to 15 minutes, whatever the weather.
In September, Ryder’s father, Tim, put up a patio (露台) umbrella at the end of his driveway to provide some shelter. However, with the wind and rain here in New England, it didn’t help much and Ryder still got wet and cold. Desperately, Tim who runs an electronics company, placed a post on Facebook, turning to his community to see if anyone could have an old bus hut (棚) which helps to protect Ryder from the bad weather.
After knowing about Ryder’s problem, three local students in Bradford, Rhode Island, decided to build a new bus hut for Ryder, worrying that snow would be falling soon and Ryder would have a rough time. They worked hard on the project for several weeks, learning new skills through YouTube to create the structure. About $300 worth of wood was donated and the rest of the materials were purchased by Tim for $600. The hut was so huge that it could accommodate both Ryder and one of his parents or a nurse comfortably, and was finally delivered to their home six weeks later on November 2.
“We were shocked. It was much bigger than we expected. Ryder loved it. He did like to go out in it every day before school,” Tim said. The family sent a photo of Ryder in the bus shelter and thanked the teens for their hard work. This project brought his community together, showing that there is kindness in this world.

The 2026 Government Work Report clearly says that China will support qualified (符合条件的) areas to carry out spring and autumn holidays for primary and secondary school students, while putting into practice the wrong-time paid leave system for workers. As a hot topic, the policy has been tested in provinces such as Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Sichuan with useful experience.
These short holidays bring many great benefits to students. They can lower study pressure after long-time learning and help students keep healthy both in body and mind. With nice and comfortable weather, students can go out of classrooms to take part in real activities, including farming experiences, nature watching and local culture learning. In this way, textbook knowledge is turned into real-life experience.
The holidays also bring advantages to families. Wrong-time leave lets parents spend happy time with their children at lower costs, away from the large crowds of busy travel seasons. Many families choose to travel, visit relatives or go to museums together, making family ties closer. At the same time, the holidays help develop local tourism and economy, making a win-win situation for education and society.
However, difficulties still exist in the policy’s carrying out (实施). The main problem is that many working parents cannot look after their children during the holidays. To solve this, many schools offer childcare services with colorful activities, and local communities offer more activities for students. The holidays can also be set freely according to local situations.
In short, spring and autumn holidays for primary and secondary school students are an important educational change. They show a turn from exam-centered education to a focus on all-round development. With joint efforts from families, schools and society, these holidays will help students grow in a healthier and more meaningful way.
8. Why are the holidays good for society and education?
A. They offer students longer-time learning.
B. They make people have enough time to travel during busy seasons.
C. They let parents have the chance to help their children with their textbook knowledge in real life.
D. They not only develop local tourism but also improve students’ physical and spiritual health.
9. Which of the following statements is Right?
A. All places in China have already started spring and autumn holidays.
B. The policy is carried out without difficulty all over China.
C. Wrong-time paid leave can help families save money and avoid crowds.
D. Students can take holidays whenever and wherever they want.
10. What does the writer think of spring and autumn holidays?
A. The holidays must be set in the same way across the country.
B. They are an important educational change.
C. They make education pay more attention to exams than before.
D. The holidays are impossible because working parents can’t look after their children.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How to help working parents look after their children.
B. How to make students become more creative.
C. The importance of developing local tourism.
D. The introduction of spring and autumn holidays and their influences.

The Red Moon Over the Lantern Festival
On the night of March 3rd, 2026, the Lantern Festival in China will be extra special. People across the country will enjoy a full moon and a rare total lunar eclipse (月全食) at the same time. A stunning “red moon” will light up the sky, bringing a cosmic touch to the traditional festival.
A total lunar eclipse happens when the Moon moves completely into Earth’s shadow. At this time, the Sun, Earth and Moon line up perfectly, with Earth in the middle. Unlike a solar eclipse, which we need special tools to enjoy, a lunar eclipse is safe to watch with our eyes. Normally, the Moon would disappear from view. However, it turns red instead of going dark. Why? The answer lies in the Earth’s atmosphere (大气层).
When sunlight passes through the Earth’s atmosphere, blue light which has short wavelengths is easily broken up by dust and water droplets in the atmosphere. Therefore, it can’t reach the Moon. However, red light, with the longest wavelength, can pass through the atmosphere and bend, or refract (折射), toward the Moon. When this red light reaches the Moon, it makes the Moon red and we see a “red moon”. The color’s depth depends on the atmosphere: more dust means a deeper red.
This kind of event is not common. A total lunar eclipse happens about once every 14 months on average. But it falls on the Lantern Festival (the 15th day of the first lunar month) only five times in the 21st century, including 2026. For people in Fujian, it is a chance to connect traditional culture with amazing science.
12. What happens during a total lunar eclipse on the 2026 Lantern Festival?
A. The Sun stands between Earth and the Moon.
B. The Moon moves completely into Earth’s shadow.
C. We must use special tools to watch it safely.
D. The Moon disappears completely and turns dark.
13. What causes the Moon to turn red during a total lunar eclipse?
A. The Moon produces red light by itself.
B. Earth’s atmosphere breaks up blue light and refracts red light.
C. Because the Earth turns red.
D. Dust on the Moon reflects red light.
14. What can we infer according to this passage?
A. Red light is easier to be broken up than blue light.
B. Blue light helps create the red moon.
C. Without Earth’s atmosphere, there may be no red moon.
D. All kinds of light can reach the Moon easily.
15. What is the writer’s attitude towards the 2026 total lunar eclipse?
A. Doubtful. B. Bored. C. Excited. D. Uninterested.
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. C 15. C
【解析】
【导语】本文介绍了2026年元宵节恰逢月全食的罕见天象,解释了月全食和“红月亮”的形成原理,说明了这一现象的稀有性与文化意义。
【12题详解】
根据第二段“A total lunar eclipse happens when the Moon moves completely into Earth’s shadow.”可知,月全食发生时月球会完全进入地球的阴影中,B选项正确。
【13题详解】
根据第三段“When sunlight passes through the Earth’s atmosphere, blue light which has short wavelengths is easily broken up by dust and water droplets... red light, with the longest wavelength, can pass through the atmosphere and bend, or refract, toward the Moon. When this red light reaches the Moon, it makes the Moon red...”可知,是地球大气层散射蓝光、折射红光,才让月亮变红,对应选项B。
【14题详解】
根据第二段“However, it turns red instead of going dark. Why? The answer lies in the Earth’s atmosphere.”及第三段的解释可知,红月亮的形成完全依赖地球大气层对光线的散射和折射作用。如果没有大气层,就没有这种光学效应,也就不会出现红月亮,C选项正确。
【15题详解】
根据第一段“A stunning ‘red moon’ will light up the sky, bringing a cosmic touch to the traditional festival.”和最后一段 “it is a chance to connect traditional culture with amazing science”可知,作者用了“stunning”这样的褒义词,语气是兴奋、期待的,对应“Excited”。
