Dear Editor,
With the development of science and technology, our life
in the future will be quite different from what it is now.
At that time,we will live in a greener and more beautiful
world with trees, birds, blue skies and sunshine. And we will
be able to arrange things like meals, bathing and sleep with
our smart phones.Robots will be able to do most of the house-
work for us.As for work,we will mostly work at home,com-
municating ideas about work online. If necessary,we will have
video meetings with our partners around the world.During our
free time,we will be able to travel to places of interest in driv-
erless cars and flying cars. And we will enjoy space trips to

I recently spent two years in the Arctic(
filming the series The Blue Planet.I love
being in an environment that has changed for
20,000 years.Of course,it's freezing,but it
10
must be a healthy place because you never catch
colds.
When I'm filming,I like to really feel how
lonely the environment is.Filming underwater
involves cutting through thick ice and diving in
tied to a line. The person at the other end has
to be ready to pull you out fast if necessary.
Originally I was a research diver for the
British Antarctic Survey project, but for me sci-
ence lacked excitement.I'd always enjoyed
photography,and whenever camera teams passed
through, they encouraged me to watch and
learn.I was then able to move into filming in
1985 and have concentrated on Arctic and Ant-
arctic wildlife ever since.
I prefer face to face with the animals I'm
filming.I haven't got into the water with killer
whales yet,but I plan to.Of course,it's danger-
ous if you choose the wrong moment. They are
big animals and can move fast,so I'd be stupid
to film them searching for food.
I've never had problems with polar bears,
although once I was frightened when one tried to
get into my tent.Polar bears are bold, clever
and dangerous.But I made this one see I wasn't
about to attack it-I'm sure it realized I
wouldn't hurt it.
When I came back home from my trips,I
work in the mornings and spend the afternoons
swimming to keep fit.Now I'm fifty,and filming
is harder. The challenge for me is to continue to
deliver high-quality work.
()25.In this text, the writer is mainly de-
scribing

ment he works in

Arctic
()26.What does the writer say about his
early career?
A.He was proud of himself as a
scientist.
B.It was a good chance to learn a-
bout filming.
C.He was bored by working only
in the Antarctic.
D.It taught him how to become a
skilled diver.
)27.When talking about killer whales,
(
the writer says that
A.he will only film them when
they are searching for food
B.he has always been careful when
diving with them
C.he will never film killer whales
because they are dangerous
D.he believes there are safe op-
portunities to film them

The oddness of life in space never quite
goes away.Here are some examples.
First consider something as simple as
sleep. Its position presents its own challenges.
The main question is whether you want your
arms inside or outside the sleeping bag.If you
leave your arms out, they float free in zero gravi-
ty,often giving a sleeping astronaut the look of a
funny ballet(芭蕾)dancer.“IT'm an inside
guy,"Mike Hopkins says,who returned from a
12
six-month tour on the International Space Sta-
tion.“I like to be wrapped up..”
On the station,the ordinary becomes
strange. The exercise bike for the American as-
tronauts has no handlebars. It also has no seat.
With no gravity,it's just as easy to pedal vio-
lently. You can watch a movie while you pedal
by floating a microcomputer anywhere you want.
But station residents have to be careful about
staying in one place too long.Without gravity to
help circulate air,the carbon dioxide you exhale
(呼气)has a tendency to form an invisible(隐
形的)cloud around your head. You can end up
with what astronauts call a carbon-dioxide head-
ache.
Leroy Chiao,54,an American retired astro-
naut after four flights, describes what happens e-
ven before you float out of your seat,"Your in-
ner ear thinks you're falling.Meanwhile your
eyes are telling you you're standing straight.
That can be annoying-that's why some people
feel sick."Within a couple of days-truly ter-
rible days for some-astronauts'brains learn to
ignore the panicky signals from the inner ear,
and space sickness disappears.
Space travel can be so delightful but at the
same time invisibly dangerous.For instance,as-
tronauts lose bone mass. That's why exercise is
considered so vital that National Aeronautics
and Space Administration (NASA)puts it right
on the workday schedule. The focus on fitness
is as much about science and the future as it is
about keeping any individual astronaut healthy.
NASA is worried about two things:recovery time
once astronauts return home,and,more impor-
tantly, how to maintain strength and fitness for
the two and a half years or more that it would
take to make a round-trip to Mars.
()32.What is the major challenge to as-
tronauts when they sleep in space?
A.Deciding on a proper sleep po-
sition.
B.Choosing a comfortable sleeping
bag.
C.Seeking a way to fall asleep
quickly.
D.Finding a right time to go to
sleep.
)33.The astronauts will suffer from a
carbon-dioxide headache when
A.they circle around on their
bikes
B.they use microcomputers with-
out a stop
C.they exercise in one place for a
long time
D.they watch a movie while ped-
aling
)34.Some astronauts feel sick on the
station during the first few days
because
A.their senses stop working
B.they have to stand up straight
C.they float out of their seats un-
expectedly
UNT2检测卷O
D.their brains received contra-
dictory messages
)35.One of the NASA's major concerns
about astronauts is
A.how much exercise they do on
the station
B.how they can remain healthy for
long in space
C.whether they can recover after
returning home
D.whether they are able to go
back to the station

Creativity is a natural gift that is valued in
many areas of human activities.Be it a scien-
tist,a writer,an artist,or a cook,all of them
share one thing in common-that is creativity.
36.
Well,this is a rather diffi-
cult question with no direct answer.Of course,
there is no course on creativity and certainly
creativity can't be taught in schools or colleges.
However, those who are creative have an a-
bility to perceive things around them in different
ways than other people.37.
So,if you are ready to change your way of loo-
king at life and perceive things around you in a
different way,you may become creative as well.
38.
This is common be-
cause people usually are resistant(抗拒的)to
anything new. They prefer things the way they

are.If you come up with an idea that opposes
their belief, they might get resistant and criticize
(指责)you.Though feedback and criticism
are good, most of the time, criticism can make
you discouraged and you may give up easily.
39.
Besides,you should limit your resources
and tools that will help you to produce creative
outputs, because limiting resources forces you to
create things with whatever is available in your
hands.40.
A.However,can creativity be ever taught?
B.Well, what kind of people can be crea-
tive?
C.People might be against your ideas at
first.
D.Their brains received contradictory
messages.
E.And that is the quality that sets them
apart from the crowd.
F.Follow your own path, and you cannot
let them take over your creativity
G.The fewer resources you have, the bet-
ter you will learn to make good use of them.

It was the old lady's birthday. She got up
early to be ready for the post. From the second
floor of the flat, she could see the postman when
he came down the street, and the little boy John-
nie from the ground floor often brought her let-
ters if there was any.
Today she was sure there would be some-
thing.Myra wouldn't forget her mother's birth-
day, even if she seldom wrote to her.Of course
Myra was busy.Unluckily,Enid,the daughter
the old lady loved most, died two years ago.
Since then Myra had come to see her mother
16
three times,but her husband,Harold,had never
come.
The old lady was eighty today. She had put
on her best dress.Perhaps-perhaps Myra
might come. She hadn't seen her for a long time
and missed her very much. After all, eighty was
a special birthday.Even if Myra did not come,
she would send a present. The old lady was
sure of that. Her face had lightened up because
of happiness.She was excited like a child.She
would enjoy her day.
Yesterday Mrs.White,the cleaner,gave the
flat an extra cleaning, and today she had brought
a card and a bunch of flowers when she came to
prepare the breakfast.The little boy,Johnnie,
had been up with a packet of candies, and said
he wouldn't go out to play until the post came.
"I guess you'll get lots and lots of presents,"he
said.
What would she receive?Maybe a pair of
slippers or a new coat.A coat would be lovely.
Blue is such a pretty colour.Or a table lamp,a
book,a travel book with pictures,or a little
clock with clear black numbers. So many lovely
things. The old lady was smiling when she
thought about this.
Paragraph 1:
She was now standing by the window and
watching.
Paragraph 2:
She immediately opened the envelope.
