During the summer vacation, Gao Yong’e had just one day in Xining, the capital city of Qinghai Province in northwest China, and she knew exactly where she was going to go: the Qinghai Tibetan Culture Museum.
“I wanted to spend the day learning and experiencing the rich traditional culture of my country," said the 31-year-old, who comes from Anhui Province in east China. There are more than 50,000 works in the Qinghai Tibetan Culture Museum. In addition to the works, the museum also offers interactive activities, such as thangka painting and traditional costume photo booths.
“The number of visitors to the museum has reached a historic high during the summer vacation. In July alone, nearly 200,000 people visited the museum, while the daily flow of tourists has reached over 6,000 since August,” said Dorje Gyal, deputy director of the museum.
Sun Xinyi and her mother made the museum their final stop after enjoying the amazing natural beauty in Qinghai. “The special Tibetan culture is an important part of our Chinese culture. Therefore, we should learn and understand it well,” the nine-year-old said.
“Now more and more young people are fond of museums. The Kung Fu TV series was very popular in the US in the 1970s, especially among children. It made people show interest in martial arts (武术)and Buddhism(佛教)in the countries where it was televised.
Though the history mentioned in the Kung Fu TV series was fictional (虚构的), the story of Shaolin Temple being destroyed in the 19th century by the Qing Dynasty is true. Nowadays, the temple has been reopened by the government and has become a place of interest.
Three major things to see in Shaolin Temple are the martial arts performances staged near the entrance, the old architecture (建筑风格) further up the mountain and the Forest of Pagodas. It is said that in the early 1900s, 90 percent of the buildings here were destroyed. What remains is mainly from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The pagodas were built in about 791 AD. Though they are called pagodas, they are not really pagodas because they are not buildings meant to have people inside them. They are two to four or five storey stone or brick monuments (纪念碑) for the people who died.
Shaolin Temple developed Buddhism centered on martial arts training and Zen meditation (禅宗冥想). The Zen way of meditation practiced by many Japanese came from here, as did certain styles of martial arts in East Asian countries. It is thought that the masters at the temple had a big influence on both the Buddhism and the martial arts in Japan.
