AEDs (体外除颤器) are machines that save lives when someone’s heart stops or beats wrongly. They are easy to use even for people without medical training. You can find them in public places like airports, schools, and malls. Look for a bright box with a heart symbol! Here’s a simple guide:
• Step 1: Take out the AED and turn it on. A voice guide can tell you what to do step by step. Take off the patient’s chest (胸部) clothes and stick the electrode pads (电极片) on the chest: one on the top right, the other on the bottom left.
• Step 2: Let the AED check the heartbeat. Stand back and don’t touch the person. The AED will take a few seconds to do this. Keep everyone away during this time so that the machine can work.
• Step 3: If the AED says “Shock needed”, make sure no one is near the patient. Then press the shock button when the machine tells you to.
Knowing how to use an AED is important. It can add the chance of living if used quickly. Stay calm and act fast — you could save a life!

What should you do if there is a fire at school? Do you know how to protect yourself in a large crowd? Every year since 1996, on the last Monday of the last week in March, the National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students (全国中小学生安全教育日) is held. This year it falls on March 30th. It offers us a chance to learn more about school safety.
A survey shows that the worst accidents are a result of stampedes (踩踏), fires and traffic. When facing an accident, the first and most important rule is to stay calm. But you should have different ways to deal with different accidents.
A stampede happens in a place where there is a large crowd. When students around you begin to push, stand still and try to hold on to something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If you fall down in a moving crowd, cover your head with both hands to protect yourself. Stand to one side, lower your body and bend your legs.
When there is a fire, you should follow the teachers’ instructions. Leave the classroom and use a piece of wet cloth to cover your mouth and nose so that you don’t breathe in smoke.
If you walk to school or go by bike, follow traffic rules. Wait for the green traffic light, and look left and right for cars before you cross the road.

Dear Amy,
My special hobby is picking up rubbish. Yes, that’s right. And I especially enjoy collecting waste wood. These pieces of wood may not be wanted by others, but my grandfather and I can give them a new life. We love turning them into shelves, sunshades, and even swings. We place them in our garden and they make us very happy. They also give our garden a sense of design.
I also like picking up bottles. These are usually empty bottles. We can repurpose them by making holes at the top and use them to water plants. Of course there can be many other uses for these bottles.
I find picking up these waste things very enjoyable. Some people think it’s difficult to discover the hidden treasures of waste things, but it is a piece of cake for me. I’m really good at turning these useless objects into useful things. They can help us do many things and create a much cleaner environment.
We are always encouraged to reduce, reuse and recycle waste. By doing these, we can not only create new things but also play our part in protecting the environment.
My special hobby of recycling rubbish really brings me a lot of fun. Would you join me? Let’s do our part to help make the world a cleaner and better place!
Yours,
Yang Jing

Laughter Is the Best Medicine
Do you often laugh with friends? Do you giggle at jokes? If you do, that is great, because just as the saying goes: Laughter is the best medicine!
People start laughing from a young age. At around three months old, babies learn to laugh. Even babies that cannot see or hear can laugh. Laughter is a natural part of life! But why is it so important?
First of all, laughter is good for our body. When we laugh, our body takes in more oxygen. Every part of our body needs oxygen to work well. Laughter also makes our body work out. Our heart, stomach, and even our shoulders work a lot when we laugh! But after we laugh, our muscles (肌肉) feel more relaxed. A good laugh can help you feel relaxed for up to 45 minutes. Over time, laughter helps our body to get stronger, fight off more illnesses, and even create special chemicals to help us feel less pain!
Laughter also has many benefits for our mind. When we laugh, it makes us feel less stressed or anxious, and things will not seem so bad. Laughing also causes our brain to release chemicals that make us feel calm and happy. Scientists even think that smiling often is enough to increase these chemicals in our brain.
But it is not always easy to laugh on our own. We are 30 times more likely to laugh when we are around others. According to some scientists, laughter can show others that we want to be close to them. Monkeys clean one another’s fur to show friendship. But people laugh so that others will know that they are being friendly.
Some people even join laughing groups. Although they force themselves to laugh at first, after hearing other people laugh, their laughter becomes real! Before long, the whole group of people is laughing hard.
The next time you feel unhappy, try thinking about something funny. Although you might not want to laugh when you are sad, doing so can make you feel better!
