六、阅读理解
It was a sunny Saturday morning. Tom, an eighth-grade student, was walking to the park when he saw an old lady standing by the roadside looking worried. She was holding a basket of apples, but one of her bags had broken, and apples were rolling (滚动) all over the street.
Tom immediately ran over to help. He picked up the apples one by one and put them back into the basket. The old lady thanked him again and again. She told Tom that she was taking the apples to her grandson’s house nearby, but her hands were shaking and she couldn’t fix the bag by herself. Tom noticed that the bag was indeed torn (撕破的).
“Don’t worry, Grandma,” Tom said with a smile. “I’ll help you fix it!” He took out his own handkerchief (手帕) from his pocket and used it to tie the broken part of the bag tightly. Though it wasn’t perfect, the bag was strong enough to hold the apples now.
The old lady was so moved that she wanted to give Tom two apples as a gift. But Tom shook his head and said, “Helping others makes me happy. I don’t need any gifts.”
That afternoon, Tom didn’t play basketball in the park as planned, but he felt much happier than playing games. He realized that helping others doesn’t require big actions—even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

5. What did Tom learn from this experience?
