I love snakes, while my mother does not. Lots of people who are afraid of snakes have never seen one. Neither has my mother. So where does the fear come from?
To find out the answer, scientists put pictures with snakes, pandas, cats, flowers and many other things in front of a group of people of all ages, even babies. People found snakes faster than flowers. It wasn’t just snakes. They found “black faces”, another example, spiders (蜘蛛), faster than “safe” things like flowers. It seems we find things that might be dangerous to us faster. Maybe we are born to be afraid of them.
Scientists also found people learned to fear snakes faster. Why did they fear snakes? Most of them said that in their experiences, they were influenced by the scared voice and faces of those who met snakes, but weren’t bitten by snakes. After all, if we had to be bitten by a snake to learn that it’s dangerous, we might learn our lesson too late.
So why is it important whether we are afraid of snakes or not? It may not matter much to us, but it is really very important to snakes. People protect animals they like, not animals they fear. Snakes may not be as cute as pandas, but they’re just of the same importance to the environment. Snakes eat insects and mice that are pests (害虫) to humans. Snakes are also food for other animals, so, when we kill snakes, we’re breaking the balance.
How can we reduce our fears to give snakes a chance? Scientists did a study recently. Some volunteer students went on a field trip. With the help of safety tips, everyone could safely touch and hold a snake. It turns out that snakes aren’t so bad when you know the way to stay with them. Most people who were afraid of snakes before the field trip weren’t afraid afterwards. In fact, snakes even became some students’ favorite animal. Hmm, maybe I should take my mom on the next field trip.
21.In the writer’s opinion, what are “black faces”?
A.Things make people feel dangerous. B.Faces of animals in the picture.
C.Things that have black faces. D.Faces of people in danger.
22.What does the writer mean by saying “we might learn our lesson too late” in the third paragraph?
A.We might never see any snakes. B.We are not in danger any longer.
C.We might not fear snakes any more. D.We might already be killed by snakes.
23.How do the scientists help people reduce the fear of snakes?
A.By teaching people skills of killing snakes.
B.By driving snakes away through a field trip.
C.By teaching them the right way to stay with them.
D.By giving snakes a chance to show they are good.
24.What can we learn from scientists after reading the passage?
A.Don’t be afraid and find chances in danger. B.Always remember to give people safety tips.
C.Face failures bravely and never give up trying. D.Find problems and do research to solve them.
25.Which fits the scientists’ idea best?

Have you ever lost yourself in doing something so that you forget the time? Everything around you—from the ringing of phones to the people passing by—seemed to be away.
Most of us have had this experience at one time or another. This special state (状态) of mind is called “flow”. When it happens, we completely pay attention to what we are doing. We feel energetic, even excited about what we are doing. For example, when you are drawing, you might forget to eat dinner because you lose yourself in it. ①
The idea of flow was introduced and first studied by psychologist (心理学家) Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. According to his discovery, whether flow happens depends on the difficulty of the challenge and our skill levels. For example, if the task is low challenging and doesn’t require a lot of skills, we probably feel bored towards it. But facing a challenging task without the required skills could easily cause worry. He finally drew the conclusion that when the challenge is difficult and we believe we have enough skills, flow happens. ②
What advantages does flow bring? During flow, people can work faster and better. For example, artists said that they could produce more works easily “without putting in much effort” in the flow state. Flow can also make people more curious and creative because they have to look for new challenges and information to keep the state. ③
Flow often happens during creative activities and sports activities. But flow states aren’t just something experienced by artists, writers or sports persons. Flow can happen anytime a person is deeply lost in a task, including during learning activities. Many people want to achieve flow more often in their daily lives. While doing a task, having clear plans, adding something challengeable and giving and receiving feedback (反馈) in time can help achieve flow. It’s more difficult to achieve flow if people’s attention are distracted (分散), so it’s necessary that smartphones, TV and other distractions get turned off. ④
26.When people are in flow, they CAN’T ________.
A.forget the time B.hear the ringing of phones
C.give full attention to their tasks D.feel excited about what they do
27.According to Csikszentmihalyi’s study, which diagram (示意图) shows the flow state?
A. B.
C. D.
28.Where can the sentence “With flow, people have greater levels of happiness and satisfaction in their activities.” be put in the passage?
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
29.Who can most probably achieve flow according to the passage?
A.A runner who wants to win the first prize in an important race.
B.An artist who is drawing an apple for his 10—year—old daughter
C.A chess player who doesn’t know what to do before competitions.
D.A student who is taking an exam when having a headache.

51.例文:
Home, a place where we solve problems together
My family is far from perfect, yet it is exactly a place where we learn to solve problems together.
Last month, my father unexpectedly lost his job. In the beginning, all of us were worried. However, instead of worrying about what had happened, we sat down together and made a practical plan. My mother decided to launch an online business selling homemade cakes. I helped design posters and packed the boxes. Meanwhile, my father took charge of the housework and devoted himself to learning new skills. After a two-month effort, our little business worked.
This experience taught me a lesson: when we stand shoulder to shoulder in the face of difficulties, we will grow stronger together.
Home, a place that is never boring
I once believed home is rather dull. However, one weekend, my mom invited me to cook dinner with her. She patiently showed me how to chop vegetables and stir-fry eggs. Although I was clumsy and made quite a mess, we couldn’t stop laughing. When my dad returned home and tasted our dishes, he exclaimed with a warm smile, “This is the best meal I’ve ever had!”
That day, I came to understand that home is not about fancy words or perfect moments. Instead, it lies in small, heartwarming things—like the pleasant smell of cooking and the sweet sound of our family laughing together.
