Built in the mountains over 1,300 years ago, the terraces cover around 180,000 hectares and extend at a height of about 1,500 metres. Water from mountain springs flows past the villages, through the terraces, and finally into rivers. Forests, villages, terraces and waterways all work together in a natural cycle. Because of this system, people can harvest rice and fish. It has also helped protect the forest and provide clean water. It shows us why we should live in harmony with nature.
