Have you ever wondered where Chinese characters (汉字) come from? Let’s travel back 3,000 years and follow one simple character: “马”.
About 3,000 years ago, during the Shang Dynasty, people wrote characters on turtle shells and animal bones. The earliest “horse” looked like a simple drawing of a real horse—you could clearly see its head, four legs, and tail.
When the Zhou Dynasty began, people started writing characters on bronze vessels (容器). This style, called “metal script”, made the “horse” character rounder and more decorative.
In 221 BCE, Emperor Qin Shi Huang standardized the writing system. He called it zhuanshu, or “seal script”. The “horse” character became simpler, but still a bit like a real horse.
Around 300 BC, the government created lishu, or “clerical script”. The “horse” character became flatter and wider. Its four legs turned into four short strokes (笔画). The tail became a simple line.
During the Tang Dynasty, kaishu or “regular script” became the standard. The “horse” character got its modern form. Every stroke had a clear start and finish. Calligraphy (书法) masters spent years perfecting this style.
In the 1950s, the government made characters simpler to help people read and write. The traditional “馬” became “马”—with only three strokes.
39. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By telling a story.
B. By listing numbers.
C. By explaining a fact.
D. By asking a question.
40. Which of the following characters is written in regular script?
A. B. C. D.
41. Why did the Chinese government introduce simplified characters in the 1950s?
A. To help more people learn to read and write.
B. To follow the international trend of writing.
C. To make the characters more artistic.
D. To make the writing system more difficult.

It has 31,000 words, more or less. The whole collection includes eighteen parts, talking about more than 550 mountains and 300 seas. It also tells many interesting stories and creatures.

When he had a big fight with Gong Gong, the god of water, Zhu Rong won. But after the fight, the human world became dark. Teenagers need eight to ten hours of sleep per night. However, in adolescence (青春期) changes to the body’s sleep cycle make it difficult for teens to fall asleep early. Many cannot fall asleep until 10:30 p.m. or even later and most of them will feel sleepy if they have to get up too early.
Scientists recommend that both middle and high schools begin no earlier than 8:30 a.m. Later school start times support the natural needs of teenagers and increase their sleeping time.
Here are some other benefits of later school start times:
More time for a healthy breakfast
When running late in the mornings, students are likely to go without breakfast. With an empty stomach, one finds it difficult to focus (集中) in class. When they are always in a hurry, students may form unhealthy eating habits.
With extra time before going to school, students can eat a well-balanced breakfast and focus more on learning.
Fewer behavioral (行为的) problems
Teens experience mood changes as a common result of this special period of life. Less sleep may cause worries, stress and unhappiness.
When they get enough sleep, students are calm and peaceful and their moods do not change suddenly. They’re less likely to feel worried, unhappy or get angry. For parents, children with more sleep are easier to live with.
Better performance (表现) in study
Sleep loss hurts attention, memory and brain development. Students with less sleep have difficulty paying attention in class and are likely to have lower grades. Students with enough sleep can be more energetic during the day and more willing to learn. They are also less likely to fall asleep in class and more able to understand what they learn.
In conclusion, starting school later helps students get a better night’s sleep. It improves their chances of eating, behaving and performing better.
49. According to the passage, what may cause teenagers to stay up?
A. Their low grades. B. Their empty stomachs.
C. Their body’s sleep cycle. D. Their heavy homework.
50. How can sleep loss influence students’ study?
A. It gives them much energy. B. It does harm to the brain.
C. It saves more time for study. D. It improves their memory.
51. What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To explain reasons for students’ stress.
B. To describe bad habits caused by sleep loss.
C. To discuss scientists’ research on healthy food.
D. To introduce benefits of later school start times.
52. In which part of the website can you probably find this passage?
A. Education. B. Fashion. C. Sports. D. Technology.

The Importance of Teamwork
Teamwork is very important in our lives. Whether it’s in a sports team, a school project, or a workplace, working together can bring many benefits.

If everyone only thinks about themselves and doesn’t work as a team, it’s very difficult to win.
In a school project, teamwork can make the work easier and more efficient (高效的). Students can divide tasks according to their abilities. Some can do research, some can write the report, and others can make the presentation. By working together, they can learn from each other and complete the project better.
In a workplace, teamwork is also necessary. Different departments need to cooperate to achieve the company’s goals.

C. To make the characters more artistic.
D. To make the writing system more difficult.

For example, in a basketball game, the guards (后卫) need to pass the ball to the forwards and centres. The players need to support and encourage each other on the court (球场).
For example, the marketing department needs to work with the production department to introduce new products to people. Teamwork helps everyone finish tasks faster and makes the workplace better.
