When Milo rushed to his classroom, he was fifteen minutes late. Mrs. Grant was very angry and stared at Milo. Her face was serious. She reminded him of her warning about not being late again. She said this time, she had to follow the rule. She told Milo that he must bring one of his parents to school the next day to meet with her. She wrote a note for him to take home and give to his parents. Milo took the note, feeling very worried about what his parents would say.
At break, the young mother came to the classroom together with Mrs. Grant. She was holding her son, who was now safe and calm. The mother explained to the whole class what Milo had done to save her son from the hot car this morning. She called Milo a little hero and gave him a big hug. Mrs. Grant walked to Milo’s desk and took back the note. She told Milo he didn’t need to bring his parents anymore because he had done something very brave and right. The whole class clapped for Milo.

W: Good afternoon and welcome to Seattle Houseboat Tours. My name’s Elizabeth Jones and I’m your guide today. This is my houseboat Moonlight. Before we go on board, I’d like to give you a little background information. Seattle has one of the largest numbers of houseboats in the U.S. — about 500 of them in fact. That’s quite a high number and shows how popular houseboat living is here. We’re at the southern end of Lake Union right now. As you have probably seen already, this is a lively area with restaurants and shops and cafes. During our one-hour tour you’ll see a number of houseboats. People can pay millions of dollars for the biggest of these. Some of them are quite amazing and have two or three floors. My own is one of the smallest boats, but I still have plenty of room, as you’ll see when I show you around. My living area includes one bedroom with a bathroom, a kitchen and a living room. I also have electricity, running water and network, so I really do have everything I need. You may be interested to know that I’m writing a book on the history of houseboats in the city, and this should be on sale from early July. Well, thank you for listening so far. Now let’s move into the boat and start the tour.

根据第六段““My mother was a small woman, but suddenly she seemed to have superhuman strength,” Keele says, her voice still wavering so many years later.(基尔说:“我妈妈是个小个子女人,但突然间她似乎有了超人的力量。”多年后,她的声音仍然在wavering)”可知,Keele在多年后回忆起这件事时,声音仍然有些颤抖,说明她仍然感到激动或紧张。因此,wavering在此处的意思应该是“颤抖的”。故选C。
【26题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第七段“At last, everyone was in the car and her next clear memory was about what happened inside the shelter.(最后,每个人都在车里,她下一个清晰的记忆是避难所里发生的事情)”以及后文描述可知,本段主要讲述了在避难所里发生的事情,包括里面的人数、外面的声音以及人们如何努力保持门不被风吹开等。
根据第二段““Get in and put on your shoes,” her mother said calmly. “We have to go to the storm cellar (地窖).”(“上车,穿上鞋子,”她妈妈平静地说。

故选A。

As a result, the corals are not only losing their food source but also their beautiful colors.(但不断上升的水温导致珊瑚虫失去了它们的海藻朋友。
划线词前文“They began by selecting certain coral species that seems to have got used to the changing ocean conditions. Then they made them even more adaptable to warmer water.(他们首先选择了一些似乎已经适应了不断变化的海洋环境的珊瑚物种。然后他们让它们更能适应温暖的海水)”说明科学家们在培育适应性强的珊瑚,从而推知划线词句“Once ready, the researchers plan to transplant the coral into Hawaii’s Kaneohe Bay.( 一旦准备好,研究人员计划将珊瑚transplant到夏威夷的Kaneohe湾)”其中划线词应为“移植”的意思,与A项中remove“移动”同义。故选A项。
根据第一段“Rising water temperatures and the increasing levels of carbon dioxide in our oceans are killing our beautiful coral reefs at a surprising speed. Add the current extreme weather pattern, and things look even worse.(海水温度的上升和海洋中二氧化碳含量的增加正在以惊人的速度杀死我们美丽的珊瑚礁。加上目前的极端天气模式,情况看起来更糟)”和第五段“To prevent these important animals from disappearing, a team of researchers are attempting to raise ‘super’ corals.(为了防止这些重要的动物消失,一组研究人员正试图培育‘超级’珊瑚)”以及全文可知,文章首先介绍了珊瑚正在大量消失的现状,然后讲述了科学家们如何想办法解决这一问题。B项“人们正在努力防止珊瑚消失”符合题意,概括主旨大意。故选B项

When it comes to choosing where to go for a vacation, what we're going to eat and drink can be a big part of
making travel plans.
Of course,it's subjective according to personal tastes, but this is TV Travel's take on some of the best food
cultures and destinations around the world.
So,as you dream about where you'll go next, which top 10 cuisines rule?
American Food
Many of the popular foods in the USA originate in some other cuisine. The pizza slice is Italian.Fries are
Belgian or Dutch.Hamburgers and frankfurters?Likely German. But in the kitchens of the United States, they have
been improved and added to-becoming global icons for food lovers everywhere.
Chinese Food
The people who greet each other with"Have you eaten yet?"are arguably the most food-obsessed in the world.
But the Chinese don't just cook and sell anything;they also make it taste great.
China's regional cuisines are so different and it's hard to believe they're from the same nation. It's not a food
culture you can easily summarize except to say you'll certainly want to taste.
French Food
If you're one of those people who don't like to eat because "there's more to life than food,"then visit Paris.
It's a city known for its picky consumers, but they all believe in the importance of good food.Two-hour lunch
breaks for three-course meals are common.
Itallan Food
Italian food has been popular around the world for centuries, with its tasty tomato sauces, those clever things
they do with wheat flour and desserts that are basically vehicles for cream.
It's all so simple.Get some noodles, get some olive oil,and get some garlic, maybe a tomato or a slice of
bacon.Bam!You have a party on a plate. And it is all so easy to cook and eat.
From the cheesy risottos to the crisp fried meats,Italian cuisine is a collection of crowd-pleasing comfort food.
Many people have welcomed it into their homes, especially green hand cooks. There lies the real genius-Italian
food has become everyman's food.
21.Which food mainly comes from other cultures?
A.American food
B.Chinese Food
C.French Food
D.Italian Food
22.In which country are the foods very different from each other?
A.In USA
B.In China
C.In France
D.In Italy
23.Who likes Italian food best?
A.Housewives
B.Chefs
C.Foreigners
D.New cooks

Standing in the yard,12-year-old Cindy Keele saw the worry on her mother's face, when the world suddenly
fell quiet, leaving the air hot and heavy over Lubbock,Texas
“Get in and put on your shoes,.”her mother said calmly..“We have to go to the storm cellar(地容).”
The girl ran inside. As soon as the door closed behind her,a softball-sized stone damaged the kitchen window
and three more broke through the back wall. And then came the unmistakable, deafening sound of an approaching
tornado.
"They say a tomado sounds like a train,"Keele recalls 51 years later."But I disagree.Maybe more like a
thousand trains. It's a sound you never forget but can never describe."
But getting herself and her three kids to safety was no simple matter-the shelter was at the opposite end of
the park.If they didn't drive, they'd never make it.
"My mother was a small woman, but suddenly she seemed to have superhuman strength,"Keele says, her

voice still wavering so many years later."She threw my four-year-old sister into the back seat. Then she went back
to the house to get my nine-year-old brother. As she got to the car,he just started flying up into the air.My mother
grabbed him by his legs,as if he were a kite, and pulled him back down."
At last, everyone was in the car and her next clear memory was about what happened inside the shelter."There
were 60 persons there,"Keele says."The sound outside was deafening.For a moment,the metal door,which was
held tight with two big slide locks at the top and bottom, seemed to be forced open by the wind.Eight men rushed
to the door and tried their best to keep it from flying open."
After what seemed like a century, the wind finally stopped. When they came out, they found that everything
was gone.
"My mother started running straight for our street.A man stopped her-he'd just come from there and he
knew what she would find,"adds Keele."I'd never seen my mom cry.But she broke down that day."

Bacteria know how to rough it out all over the earth.Ask most of them where they'd prefer to settle though
and a kitchen sponge (would probably top the list.Yes,it turns out that the very tool we use to clean our
plates, which is warm, damp, and full of nutritious food pieces,is packed of tiny life.
Lingchong You,a biologist at Duke University, along with his team, used computers to model the complex
environment of a sponge for a 2022 study. He found that sponges featuring pockets of varying sizes are something
that really matters for promoting bacterial growth. This holds significance as certain bacteria tend to grow
independently while others demand the companionship of others.Within a sponge filled with holes and pockets,
there exist such an abundance of diverse structures that everyone attains a state of satisfaction.
Nevertheless,it does not necessarily follow that these tools present a health risk to us as well.Bacteria exist
everywhere and not all are harmful;in fact, many perform vital jobs. The important question is,therefore, are the
bacteria found in sponges even worth worrying about?
In 2017,Jennifer Quinlan,a professor of food safety, and her colleagues, collected kitchen sponges from 100
homes, finding that only 1-2%of those sponges contained bacteria linked to food poisoning in humans and the ones
that did contained only small amounts of harmful bacteria."The vast majority of bacteria on sponges do not cause
illness, and they're just going to make them smell."says Quinlan.
This is not the whole story yet.If dangerous bacteria happen to arrive on the scene, the sponge's special
make-up makes it an ideal place for them to grow and multiply. And there's evidence this is the case.
28.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.Sponges are perfect tools in the kitchen.
B.Bacteria prefer to live in dry environment.
C.Kitchen sponges are good home for bacteria.
D.Bacteria affect kitchen sponges'performance.
29.What did Lingchong You find in his study?
A.What encourages bacterial growth.
B.How sponges are exactly structured.
C.How bacteria grow independently.
D.Why bacteria keep company with each other.
30.What does Quinlan think of bacteria on sponges?
A.Poorly adaptive.
B.Relatively harmless.
C.Partly distributed.
D.Surprisingly unpleasant.
31.What will be probably discussed in the following paragraph?
A.Evidence of bacterial threat.
B.The classification of bacteria.
C.Methods to help bacterial growth.
D.Research into applications of bacteria.

So what makes coral so sensitive?Although it may be hard to believe, corals are not plants, but animals. The
colorful reefs we admire so much happen to be skeletons(given up by hundreds of thousands of polyps(
)To survive, these animals live with an algae()The coral polyps give the algae a home and then the algae
provide the polyps with their bright color and food.
But the rising water temperatures are causing the coral polyps to lose their algae friends. As a result, the corals
are not only losing their food source but also their beautiful colors.
The disappearance of the coral not only makes humans lose the chance to admire the beautiful coral reefs. It
also removes a natural barrier which protects shorelines from storms and also fewer living places for fish and other
sea animals.
To prevent these important animals from disappearing,a team of researchers are attempting to raise'super'
corals.
They began by selecting certain coral species that seems to have got used to the changing ocean conditions.
Then they made them even more adaptable to warmer water.Once ready, the researchers plan to transplant the coral
into Hawaii's Kaneohe Bay.
This sounds simple, but they are not sure that it will work because coral is sensitive to touch and also develops
very slowly and infrequently. Also, past attempts to remove coral have failed because they were either eaten by fish
or died of disease.
Though there exist these dangers, researchers believe there's no other choice to prevent the reefs from
disappearing.Tom Oliver,a scientist says,"The question is not'can they do it?,but'can they do it fast enough?""

A.Corals come in different colors.
B.Corals are not plants but animals.
C.Corals are sensitive to water temperatures.
D.Coral reefs can protect the coast from storms
33.What make coral lose its color?
A.The failure to raise them.
B.Too much sunshine.
C.The polluted sea water.

35.What is mainly talked about in the text?
A.Corals are of great use to people.
B.People are trying to prevent corals disappearing.
C.Human activities are affecting the growth of corals.

Milo was a third-grade student. One morning, with the school bell due to ring in just minutes,he was running
desperately through the grocery store parking lot.His teacher Mrs.Grant had warned him the day before that if he
was late one more time, she would call his parents.
Halfway across the lot,Milo froze.Sun beat down on a silver car.Inside the car,a little boy was tied in a seat.
His small hands waved weakly. His face was red,and his cheeks had lines of tears. The window was closed tight.
Sweat shone on the boy's head.Milo was terrified, but when he looked around, there was no one else.Milo's
stomach turned.Heat could kill faster than anyone imagined. He dropped his backpack, ran to the car,and
desperately pulled at every handle-all locked. He hit the window again and again in panic, but the parking lot
was still empty.No one came.
Milo looked around wildly, and then he remembered the security guard's booth (near the store
entrance.Without another thought,Milo took off running, shouting as he went,He burst into the small booth,
breathiess, and poured out his story to the surprised guard.
Within minutes, the guard was on the radio, and a store manager came rushing out with a special tool to
unlock the door of the car.As the door opened,a blast of hot air escaped. The boy's cries, now loud and clear, filled
the quiet lot.Milo watched, his own fear fading,as the manager gently lifted the sweating boy and held him close.
A few minutes later,a young woman came hurrying out of the store, her arms full of bags. Her face went pale
when she saw the crowd around her car.She dropped the bags and ran forward, tears springing to her eyes as the
manager placed her son safely in her arms. She had only run in for medicine quickly, she explained, her voice
trembling with regret. She never meant to be more than a minute.
