Unit 6 Crossing Cultures
第2课时 Section A 2b-2d
1.阅读理解
The meaning of shaking the head is not always the same in different countries. For example, in China, when people shake their heads, they mean "No”. But in India, it is different.
Maybe some visitors in India will be surprised to find that an Indian often shakes his head. The visitors might think that the Indian doesn't like what they say. But in fact, the Indian is saying "Yes" by shaking his head. If someone wants to visit India,he should know this, or it will bring him some trouble.
One day, a foreign officer went to India on business. He hired an Indian driver, and gave the driver some money to drive a car. When he told his driver to send him to his office, the Indian shook his head at once. The officer said again and the driver shook his head again. At last, the officer got angry.
"How can you refuse me?" he shouted."Take me to my office now!" The driver answered in a quite loud voice,“Yes,sir!” But surprisingly, the driver shook his head at the same time. The car started, and the foreign officer was too surprised to say a word. He thought about it for a long time, and then he nodded with a smile, “Shaking heads means "Yes' here!”
So next time when you come to India, think twice before you shake your head.
