Can you use a piece of paper to hold (支撑) something very heavy? A 14-year-old boy named Miles Wu makes it!
Miles loves folding (折叠) paper. He started folding paper when he was eight years old. He enjoys making paper birds and insects. They look so lively that many people like his works. Sometimes, he even sells some of his works to raise money for poor people. He thinks it is meaningful to help others.
Miles joins a big science contest (比赛) this year. This time, he uses a special way to fold paper called the Miura-Ori fold. This fold lets a large map open and close easily. NASA also uses the same idea.
Miles wants to use these folds to help people. He thinks they can make strong shelters (庇护所) for people who lose their homes. He builds a “lab” in his living room and tries 54 different ways to fold paper. He never gives up, even when some folds break easily.
At last, he discovers one way of folding the paper. The paper can hold more than 10,000 times its own weight! Miles says this is like putting 4,000 elephants on top of a taxi. It sounds amazing, but his test results show it is true.
Miles wins and gets $ 25,000. He plans to use the money to keep folding paper. “It is always important to follow your interest,” he says, “You never know where it can lead you.”

Why does AI sometimes give us the wrong information? AI can answer questions, but sometimes its answers may be wrong. They just guess them. Scientists call this “AI hallucination (幻视,幻听)”.
What causes this? Think of the Internet as a library. AI learns by reading the “books” in it. Some of these “books” have mistakes, and AI copies (拷贝) them. Even with perfect “books”, AI can still hallucinate. This is because some questions are too hard for AI. For example, in a class of 50 students, knowing the birthdays of 49 students does not help you to know the last one’s birthday.
Why not teach AI to say “I don’t know”? AI makers usually don’t do that, because in that way, few people will ask AI for help. Just think: if you ask AI questions and it often says “I don’t know”, you may feel this AI isn’t helpful. Then you will not want to ask it again. AI makers want lots of people to use it, so they try to make it answer all the questions, but sometimes their answers aren’t right.
There is some advice on how to use AI. First, after getting an answer from AI, look it up in books or ask your teachers or parents if you want to get right information. Second, keep your questions simple. Make them easy for AI to understand. At last, ask the same question to more than one AI.
8. What is “AI hallucination”?
A. AI can give right answers to all questions.
B. AI can understand scientists’ questions.
C. AI may read all the books in the library.
D. AI may make mistakes when answering questions.
9. Why does AI have hallucinations even with perfect “books”?
A. Because AI doesn’t like reading “books”.
B. Because AI copies mistakes from other AIs.
C. Because there are only 49 students in the class.
D. Because some questions are too difficult for AI.
10. What does the underlined word “simple” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A. easy. B. long. C. hard. D. right.
11. What is the writer’s purpose (目的) in writing this passage?
A. To ask people not to use AI.
B. To tell AI hallucination and give advice.
C. To introduce the history of AI.
D. To show the good uses of modern AI.
【答案】8. D 9. D 10. A 11. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,解释了“AI幻觉”这一现象的原因,指出AI开发者倾向于让AI回答所有问题以避免用户流失,最后给出了使用AI的三条建议。
【8题详解】
第一段中提到“AI can answer questions, but sometimes its answers may be wrong... Scientists call this ‘AI hallucination’.”,这说明“AI幻觉”指的是AI在回答问题时可能会犯错,所以选项D“AI may make mistakes when answering questions.”正确。
【9题详解】
第二段中提到“Even with perfect ‘books’, AI can still hallucinate. This is because some questions are too hard for AI.”,这说明即使有完美的“书籍”,AI仍然会出现幻觉,因为有些问题对AI来说太难了,所以选项D“Because some questions are too difficult for AI.”正确。
【10题详解】
第四段中提到“keep your questions simple. Make them easy for AI to understand.”,通过后一句“让AI容易理解”可以推断,划线词“simple”在此意为“简单的、容易的”,与“easy”意思相近。
【11题详解】
全文首先介绍了“AI幻觉”这一概念及其产生的原因,最后一段给出了三条使用AI的建议,所以作者写这篇文章的目的是解释AI幻觉并给出建议,选项B“To tell AI hallucination and give advice.”正确。
D
Have you ever noticed that your cat talks to some people more than others? Well, a new study from Turkey finds something interesting: cats often meow (喵) more at men than at women.
The scientists studied 31 cats and their owners. They watch what the cats do carefully in the first few minutes after their owners come home every day. They find that cats make more sounds when greeting men. On average (平均), cats meow 4.3 times for men, but they only meow 1.8 times for women.
This does not mean cats like men better. Scientists have a good reason for this. They think men usually pay less (更少的) attention (关注) to their cats than women. Most women often talk to their cats and play with them, but men don’t do these things very often. So cats have to meow more to get men’s love and attention. “Men usually talk less to their cats than women,” says a scientist. “So cats meow more to get more attention from them.”
The study also finds another warm thing. When cats greet their owners, they always show friendly and relaxed actions. They may walk around their owners or stay close to their legs. These actions tell us that cats are happy and feel safe when their owners come back home.
The scientists only study cats in Turkey, so we don’t know if cats around the world act the same. Maybe cats in other countries also have their own special ways to get attention from their owners. It is really fun to learn more about cute pet cats.
12. Why do cats meow more to men?
A. Because cats like men better.
B. Because men give cats more food.
C. Because men talk less to cats.
D. Because men give more attention to cats.
13. What do the friendly actions of cats show when they greet their owners?
A. They are happy and feel safe.
B. They are hungry and want food.
C. They are tired and want to sleep.
D. They are excited and want to go out.
14. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. Cats around the world act the same.
B. Cats in all countries meow in the same way.
C. Cats may have different ways to get attention.
D. Cats in the study are from different countries.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Lovely Cats Around the World B. How to Make Cats Happy
C. Why Cats Meow More to Men D. Different Sounds of Cats
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. C 15. C
第三段提到“‘Men usually talk less to their cats than women,’ says a scientist. ‘So cats meow more to get more attention from them.’”这表明猫咪对着男性叫得更多,是因为男性和猫咪说话更少,猫咪需要通过更多叫声来获取关注。
【13题详解】
第四段提到“These actions tell us that cats are happy and feel safe when their owners come back home.”直接说明了猫咪的友好动作代表它们开心且感到安全。
【14题详解】
最后一段提到“Maybe cats in other countries also have their own special ways to get attention from their owners.”说明其他国家的猫咪可能有不同的方式获取关注。
【15题详解】
文章开篇就点明核心“cats often meow more at men than at women”,全文围绕这一现象展开,介绍了研究、原因、猫咪的表现等内容,因此最佳标题是“Why Cats Meow More to Men”。
