A quilt with a History
While visiting my husband’s relatives years ago, I admired his Auntie Doris’ collection of hand stitched (手工缝纫的) quilt. 1 stood out from the rest was a particularly pretty one. Auntie explained that every piece of the quilt 2 (cut) from her favourite clothes and represented an important moment in her life. “This is from a blouse I wore to the very first picture show I ever saw,”she said. Her stories went on. When it was time 3 (leave), she presented me with her valued quilt.
I began retelling this story to my 12-year-old granddaughter, 4 some worries. Maybe children 5 (raise)in the 21st century wouldn’t be interested in an old lady’s talking about an old quilt, but I wanted to pass along this piece of family history. To my surprise, my granddaughter loved it, after I explained why old clothes were made quilts. This opened the door to 6 (describe) how mothers passed along the knowledge of cooking, gardening and sewing to their daughters to ensure that their daughters would be well-armed to face life’s demands. In turn, my granddaughter explained how modern mothers pass on knowledge of computers, college and financial planning to ensure their daughters’ success. Surprised by how much my granddaughter had to teach me, I thought about the days 7 multi-generations of families lived under one roof. Sharing knowledge and history 8 have been a daily occurrence at that time.
Multi-generational homes may be rarer now, but we can use new ways to promote the love shared by grandparents and grandchildren have always shared. As long as we continue to teach and learn from each other, we can build closeness, 9 they are generations or thousands of miles apart. It can be anything-computer, cooking, gardening, maybe even a young lady’s story told in a quilt-that brings you far 10 (close)to those you love.

The MacArthur Foundation late last month announced its latest crop of “genius grants”, and once again you thought maybe, just maybe, this was your year.
And why not? These days, we’re all geniuses. We might be “marketing geniuses” or “cooking geniuses” or “TV geniuses”. We have so 11 “genius” that it’s fast joining the company of “natural” and “mindful”, words left inactive through overuse and misuse.
The word is 12 tough to nail down. Sometimes we assume genius equivalent to 13 intelligence. But many of humanity’s greatest breakthroughs were achieved by those with only modest IQs.
Sometimes we think of the genius as someone extremely knowledgeable, but that definition also falls 14 . They weren’t able to, as he put it, “regard old questions from a new angle”.
The genius is not a know-it-all but a see-it-all, someone who, working with the material available to all of us, is able to make surprising and useful connections. True genius involves not merely an extra advance, but a conceptual 15 . Reading is not an instinct. As children, we have to start from scratch. We wire our brains to read by gradually enhancing links between the critical areas: those that recognise the visual form of letters, those that tell us what a word sounds like and how you 21 say it, and so on.
Writing by hand helps to form these brain 22 . When we learn how to write, we use parts of the brain known as the motor cortices that control physical movements. When we read, those same areas are activated — suggesting we basically write words in our minds as we 23 them.
Karin James of Indiana University in Bloomington has found that young children can recognise new letters more readily when they learn that letters by writing them 24 by typing or tracing. James has also shown that some brain regions that light up when adults read also become active in children 25 letters they’ve learned to print by hand — but not in children who’ve learned letters by typing them.
This seems like strong evidence of the importance of handwriting, but James 26 that just because adults use certain circuitry (线路) to read does not necessarily mean it’s the only writing that could work. “Our brains are clearly 27 ,” she says, “It might be just fine to start typing — and for that you need a whole different brain network and learn how to read that way. We don’t know yet.”
For now though, most studies suggest handwriting has a(n) 28 role to play. Marieke Long-camp at Aix-Marseille University in France has shown that when adults learned unfamiliar characters based on the Bengali and Gujarati alphabets either by writing or typing, those who 29 the letters remembered them better three weeks later.
Part of the problem is that typing does not 30 in us the same understanding of character or letter forms as writing by hand. “If you show children just a single typical A, they’re not going to be able to understand that another 31 of an A is the same thing.” James says. The messy and inconsistent way that children (and many adults) tend to write, 32 , may help them to cope with a wide variety of typefaces and letter forms.
Writing freehand, then, seems to be an important part of learning to read — but does the 33 of handwriting make a difference? Some schools have 34 teaching cursive (草书体的) or joined-up writing. In the US, for instance, it is not part of the national curriculum adopted by 46 states, though it has come back in some states in response to a public outcry. When it comes to learning to read, though, James has found that writing in cursive doesn’t seem to add anything to the mix. “It seems like it’s any kind of 35 of a letter by hand that makes the difference.” she says.

Bear Lake Monster
If you travel to Bear Lake in Utah on a quiet day, you just might catch a glimpse of the Bear Lake Monster. The monster looks like a huge brown snake and is nearly 90 feet long. It has ears that stick out from the side of its skinny head and a mouth big enough to eat a man. According to some, it has small legs and it crawls 1 it ventures out on land. But in the water - watch out! It can swim faster than a horse can gallop, 2 (make) a mile a minute on a good day. Sometimes the monster likes to sneak up on unsuspecting swimmers and blow water 3 them. I mean, the ones it doesn’t carry off to eat, that is.
A guy I heard about 4 (spot) the monster early one evening as he was walking along the lake. He tried 5 (shoot) it with his rifle. The man was a crack shot, but not one of his bullets touched that monster. It scared him so much that he high tailed it home faster than you can say Jack Robinson, leaving his rifle behind in panic, which he later said 6 (eat) by the monster.
Sometimes, when the monster has been quiet for a while, people start saying it is gone for good. Some people even drag out that old tale about 7 Pecos Bill (a legendary cowboy hero) heard about the Bear Lake monster and bet some cowboys that he could wrestle that monster until it said uncle. According to them, the fight lasted for days and created a hurricane around Bear Lake. Finally, Bill tossed that monster over his shoulder and it flew so far that it went clear around the world before splashing down in Loch Ness, 8 it’s said to live to this very day.
Of course, we know better than that. The Bear Lake Monster is just taking a long nap, 9 (hide), you might say. Keep your eyes open at dusk and maybe you’ll see it come out to feed. Just be careful when swimming in the lake, 10 you might be its next meal!

Carbon labelling isn’t new, but it is gaining a lot more traction of late - especially when it comes to travel. Carbon labels should be an easy way of 11 products or services to see which are most sustainable at a glance, by providing a comprehensive, numbered footprint. Increasing numbers of businesses across a variety of sectors are getting onboard with the idea. For example, in the last month alone, exercise tracking app Strava announced a new tool to 12 carbon savings from going for runs, walks, cycles and e-bike rides.
But perhaps one of the industries in which the concept could be most complicated is travel. It is one of the most carbon-intensive recreational activities any of us will ever take, and one for which the majority of us have 13 ideas of the impact. If you break it all down, which is really worse: an all-inclusive cruise round the Bahamas? Or a trip to an eco-lodge in Costa Rica that involves a 24-hour round-trip on a plane? As an ordinary individual, it feels like an impossible task to figure out if one holiday is “better”than another.
Many a pioneering 14 started doing the hard work of measuring the impact of trips, down to the smallest element, and posting the results on their packages several years ago. Much Better Adventures led the 15 , trailing the idea at the beginning of 2021- the first international travel company to do so. “Do I think it will be everywhere? I do,” Sam Bruce, the business’s co-founder, told me at the time. “It should go beyond travel and they should be on all products that we buy; carbon labels should be the new 16 . In Much Better Adventures’ case, the label includes carbon emissions from all local transport, accommodation, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
Pura Aventura, 17 in holidays to Latin America, Spain and Portugal, wasn’t far behind, though with a different slant.” The complexity we have is that all our trips are 18 -so we can’t say we’ve got 50 trips and let’s measure the carbon of each one,“said co-founder and CEO Thomas Power.” Every trip is different. You need a 19 tool — so we built it into our database.“ The company doesn’t just measure the trip itself, but includes the travel to get there, door-to-door: ”We want to know where you live, where the airport is, which flight you’re taking,“says Thomas.”We can 20 into the database your postcode, Gatwick airport, your short-haul flight-and then the carbon factor calculates the journey and the amount of carbon produced.

Lately, it’s been hard for Jack Innenan, a 22-year-old TikTok star from Toronto, to create content. “I feel like I’m 21 a keg (酒桶) that’s been empty for a year,” he said.

Still, they weren’t prepared for the draining work of building, maintaining and 29 an audience. 30 , they have encountered all kinds of problems, including bullying harassment and discrimination. “Some creators get their content 31 too, so someone else will go viral off their content and get all the 32 ,” Mr. Harris said.
To cope with depression, many TikTok creators have sought therapy and life coaching, or tried to be more 33 with their fans and friends about their struggles.
A TikTok spokesperson wrote in an email statement, “We’re focused on understanding their individual content goals and experiences, and our teams continue to work to provide resources, support, and an open door for feedback.”
But even the most 34 platforms can’t eliminate the hazards inherent in a creator’s job, or the pressure many creators put on themselves. “It feels like I personally am failing and may never recover if a 35 flops,” a TikTok creator said.

故填What。
故填had been cut。
It is time to do sth.“到做某事的时间了”,所以为动词不定式形式。故填to leave。
故填with。
故填when。
故填must。
故填whether。

表示“把某物授予某人”,根据后文“title of genius on talented people hitting visible targets.”
故填A。
故填I。

Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passages coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

故选I项。
