Juliane was born in Lima, Peru. Her parents were scientists. Her dad studied animals, and her mum was an expert on birds. When Juliane was 14, her family moved to the Amazon to build a research station called Panguana. There, Juliane learnt how to live in the rainforest, like how to find food and water, and how to stay safe from dangerous animals.
On 24 December, 1971, 17-year-old Juliane was on a plane. She was going to the Panguana Biological Station with her mother. It was a common journey at first. However, the plane broke apart in the air. You can imagine Juliane’s fear! Juliane amazingly survived the fall from nearly 3 kilometers. She was still tied to her seat by a seat belt at that time.
After the accident, Juliane was left alone and badly hurt in the rainforest. She only had one shoe and a broken skirt. The rainforest was very dangerous, with snakes hiding in the dead leaves on the ground. She remembered what her parents taught her and started walking. She followed a river because she thought it was safer.
The weather was terrible: it was very hot during the day and very cold at night, and heavy rain often made things harder. She only ate candy until it was gone. After several days’ walking through the dangerous rainforest, she found a camp by accident. Workers there helped her and took her to a town. Then, she flew on a plane to a hospital.
Juliane was the only person who lived from the accident. After she got better, she helped a search team find the crash site (坠落点) and the people who didn’t survive, including her mother.

We must not be afraid of losing. When we lose, just take it with a smile and look on the bright side of it. Failure can’t be avoided (避免) in our life. Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb (灯泡). When he was asked how he felt, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times but had learned 10,000 things which didn’t work. We must know that history is full of examples of men and women who achieved (成功) success although they failed many times.
Losing is not very disgraceful. We must accept our failure and learn to take advantage of (充分利用) it. Remember that it can be helpful. Take action to walk out of it. When we lose, think about what we did and how we can improve. If someone else can help, we’ll be lucky enough. Maybe he or she has been through the same experience before. Many people enjoy helping others solve problems. This can save us a lot of time in learning how to avoid the same mistakes in the future.
We should face our failure when we lose. There is only one winner in every competition. Some win, while some lose. That is a usual way of life. If we offer our congratulations to the winners and share their happiness, we won’t feel sorry for our failure.
In a word, being a good loser will help us to succeed in life. It might be painful at the beginning, but there are many advantages (优点). Good losers set examples to us, and most importantly, they finally win.
46. In the writer’s eyes, why did Edison achieve success?
A. He got help from others. B. He happened to make it.
C. He avoided possible mistakes. D. He saw the bright side of losing.
47. What does the underlined word “disgraceful” probably mean?
A. Bad. B. Personal. C. Dangerous. D. Interesting.
48. What is the best title for the text?
A. Ideas about How to Avoid Mistakes B. Experience in Dealing with Problems
C. Advice on How to Be a Good Loser D. Advantages of both Success and Failure
49. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?
A. B. C. D.

原文第二段提到“When we lose, just take it with a smile and look on the bright side of it. Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb... he hadn’t failed 10,000 times but had learned 10,000 things which didn’t work.”,由此可知在作者看来,爱迪生成功的原因是他能看到失败积极的一面。
原文第三段提到“Losing is not very disgraceful. We must accept our failure and learn to take advantage of it.”,结合上下文对失败的积极态度,可推断disgraceful的意思是不好的、丢脸的,与bad意思相近。

Can you imagine students managing their own library? That’s exactly what a group of students at Kensington Health Sciences Academy (KHSA) in the USA did.
Some years ago, the high school had no library. A determined group of students decided to take action and solve the problem themselves. They raised $1,000, bought a rolling cart (手推车), and collected free books from their community. They pushed the cart through the hallways to encourage students to read.
Their big break came when they won $20,000 in a local contest (比赛). With the prize money, they turned their small cart into a real library in a small room. They named it the Dream Escape Library. They hoped it would be a place for students to dream and escape (逃避) into books.
Their story touched the community, and help poured in. Thanks to the help, their library grew into a bright room. Now it is filled with everything from thousands of books to tables, comfortable chairs and computers.
The students do all the work. They open the library after school, organize books and help classmates find good reads. Now, the library is open for about an hour after school, three days a week, but the students have a plan. They hope it is open during lunchtime to reach more students.
50. What did the students buy at first for their “library”?
A. Secondhand books. B. A rolling cart.
C. Tables and chairs. D. Computers.
51. Why did they name the library “DreamEscape”?
A. It only has books about dreams.
B. It is in a shared room near KHSA.
C. It is a place to dream and enjoy reading.
D. It is a place for students who want to escape.
52. What might be the best title for this passage?
A. How to start a library. B. A school without a library.
C. From a cart to a dream library. D. Famous libraries in the USA.
B 51. C 52. C
第二段提到“They raised $1,000, bought a rolling cart (手推车), and collected free books from their community.”,这直接表明学生们一开始为他们的“图书馆”买了手推车。
第三段提到“They named it the Dream Escape Library. They hoped it would be a place for students to dream and escape (逃避) into books.”,说明他们给图书馆命名为“Dream Escape”是因为希望它是一个让学生梦想并享受阅读的地方。

The students’ life today can be very stressful They are under pressure every day. They need a break from it. Parents should ask children to do something else. But do not let them relax in front of the TV. A hobby is the perfect answer.
There are many different kinds of hobbies. Chess is a good example. It is a very enjoyable game and it also helps children develop their thinking skills. Collecting something is also a good hobby for children. A child can collect almost anything: key rings, stamps, postcards, old coins and so on. Many of these collections can be both interesting and fun. Some hobbies teach children a lot and open their minds. For example, gardening (园艺) is a useful hobby because it, as a physical activity, is good for children’s health and it also teaches children about nature.

Nobody wants to lose, but we must accept that losing is a part of life. After all, we can’t win all the time. However, we can learn something valuable from every failure (失败). This may help us succeed in the future. So we must know how to be a good loser.

A hobby can be a useful learning tool. Children may become experts in something if they really love their hobbies. Children will also learn to become more independent. Hobbies will also teach children a lot about duty (责任).
