Is AI bad for new music?
Recently, there has been a rise in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create music. Some people think that using AI to produce music isn’t creative enough because it just makes songs out of old music. What do you think? Is AI bad for new music?
“Yes, AI music is not creative,” says Peter.
________ If companies can use AI to produce popular music and make lots of money, it could put musicians like me out of work. If musicians can’t earn money from music, there will be far fewer of them creating new songs.
Anyway, listening to music that was made by a computer isn’t the same experience as listening to human-made music. When I create songs, I put different feelings and real experiences into my work, creating songs that connect with people at a deep level. Songs produced by AI aren’t original (新颖的) because the computer just makes music from the old. AI music isn’t completely creative.
“No, AI can produce new ideas.” says Mary.
I’m a music lover. When I turn on my radio and listen to a great new song, it makes me feel good. If people are enjoying music, does it matter whether it is made by a human or a machine?
I think music makers can use computers to perfect sound and mix different layers of a song. For me, AI is just another new technology, a tool that they can use to express ideas. It won’t replace musicians but they can work with it. It could allow much more music to be produced and it could lead to new and special styles of music. AI could create exciting music that humans could never have dreamed of.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Now that you’ve read something about it, tell us what you think. We’ll publish the result next week.
62. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To suggest what humans can do with the help of AI.
B. To show how AI helps musicians produce new ideas.
C. To share ideas on whether AI is suitable for creating new music.
D. To explain the reasons why more people like AI music.
63. Which of the following can be put in “________”?
A. Wonderful music brings people together to sing and dance.
B. Some AI music has become so popular online.
C. Using AI might be cheaper than paying a musician.
D. Humans have been making music for pleasure and to express themselves.
64. Which of the following does Mary most probably agree with?
A. AI helps musicians make more money. B. AI will take the place of musicians.
C. Human-made music is better than AI music. D. AI is a new tool to help musicians express ideas.
65. Which is most likely to be part of the magazine next week?
A
WORD WEEK AI
B
THE WEEK Junior
AI is the short term for artificial intelligence. It is the computer science that deals with writing computer programs. It can solve problems creatively.
LAST WEEK’s VOTE
Last week we asked about your opinions on whether AI is bad for new music. Most of you prefer music created by real people, rather than that written by a computer.
C
ASK THE AUTHOR
D
READER’S RECOMMENDATION
Q: Will AI take the place of musicians?

Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can’t talk, but can they lie with their bodies and behaviour? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Dishonesty often helps them survive (生存).
Many kinds of birds are very successful in fooling other animals. A bird called the plover (鸻) sometimes pretends (假装) to be hurt in order to protect its young. When an enemy gets close to its nest, the plover pretends to have a broken wing. The enemy follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay (灌丛鸦), buries (埋) its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays also steal food. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when others are watching them. So they get back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.
Chimpanzees (黑猩猩) can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimpanzee will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimpanzee puts out its hand too, the chimpanzees are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimpanzee take the winner’s hand and start fighting again. When chimpanzees find food, it’s natural for them to cry out. Then other chimpanzees come running. But some clever chimpanzees learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimpanzees don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share the food.
66. Why does the plover pretend to be hurt?
A. To show its friendliness. B. To save its young.
C. To catch the enemy. D. To steal others’ food.
67. What do clever scrub jays do with their food?
A. They bury the food deep. B. They watch the food.
C. They bury the food twice. D. They do nothing with their food.
68. According to Paragraph 4, in which picture can we find a “sneaky” animal?
A. B. C. D.
69. What will the chimpanzee probably do after crying softly?
A. It will eat all the food it finds. B. It will share the food with others.
C. It will fight again with the winner. D. It will find food with others.
70. What is the best title for the text?
A. Do animals lie? B. How to survive?
C. How do animals protect lives? D. How do animals find food?

Dear Wang,
Great to hear you are coming to the USA! I do hope you can stop by and visit us in the Big Apple—a popular name for New York City. There are so many things to see and do here. It would take a lifetime to list them all: Chinatown, Wall Street, Central Park, to name only a few. But knowing you as I do, I’d suggest walking through Midtown Manhattan. It is very popular in the USA and just can’t be missed!
People often say that no visit to New York City is complete without a trip to Broadway! Broadway with its cafes, street performers (表演者) and colorful signs really represents New York’s loud spirit! As Broadway is the heart of the American theater industry, it’s at night when it truly comes alive. Broadway is well-known for its big theaters. They show Shakespeare, modern plays, dance shows or musicals-take your pick! With your love of singing and interest in drama (戏剧), I’d recommend (推荐) a musical. It’s a great and moving experience that I’m sure you would love—a bit like Peking Opera! Many musicals are based on classic stories like Les Miserables or Peter Pan, and they might even inspire (激发) you to read the books, too!
My big news is that I am going to China on vacation this winter. I am looking for places of interest in China. Can you recommend some to me?
See you soon!
Leslie

句型“it took sb. some time...” “he”的宾格是“him”。
“learn to do sth.”
“fall in love with...”

根据表格中Polar Bear的Adaptation部分“about 67% of the time for sleep; about 30% for the swim; eat at the other time”可知,北极熊的睡眠时间约占67%,游泳时间约占30%,剩余时间为进食时间,经计算:100%-67%-30%=3%。

66. B 67. C 68. D 69. A 70. A

Dear Wang,
Great to hear you are coming to the USA!
Leslie
