More than three months have passed since Australia banned social media (社交媒体) for under-16s. How has life changed for teenagers there? The reporter recently interviewed four of them to find out.
Emma Williams, 15
I’ll be 16 in a few weeks, so I’m not too worried about the ban (禁令). Most of my friends are older than me. Some of them keep funny short dramas and show them to me. We usually have a good laugh together. The only “trouble” I’ve noticed is that I’m sometimes out of the loop. I don’t always understand the memes (梗) my friends are talking about.
Pia Monti, 13
The ban doesn’t really affect me because I only add my real-life friends on social media. I can still have fun with them in person. When I was younger, I couldn’t wait to join social media. Now, I don’t really care. I’ve realized that I’m able to connect with my friends without using social media.
Ewan Buchanan-Constable, 15
On the last day before the ban took effect, everyone was busy exchanging phone numbers. Before the ban, very few of us did this. I’ve developed closer friendships with people. What a happy accident!
Grace Guo, 14
The ban has made me realize that we sometimes depend too much on social media. There are plenty of other ways to relax and stay connected. I can still search for and watch videos on YouTube. Since I can’t use apps like Instagram, I’ve started texting more. But I haven’t been using technology as much since the ban came into effect.
21. Why isn’t Emma worried about the ban?
A. She will be 16 in a few weeks.
B. She doesn’t like using social media.
C. She can watch funny short dramas online.
22. What does Pia think of social media now?
A. It’s necessary for making friends.
B. She doesn’t care about it anymore.
C. It helps her to connect with friends better.
23. What can we infer from Ewan’s and Grace’s words?
A. Grace thinks the ban is meaningless.
B. Grace uses technology more than before.
C. Ewan feels thankful for closer connections.

Whenever I travel alone, I love chatting with locals and asking for their recommendations (推荐). It’s a great way to gain the best local experiences. I’m lucky to have a German friend named Lena, who has lived in China’s Jiangnan area for three years. She told me that it is one of the best seasons for picking tea in Hangzhou, so we joined a half-day tour to experience it ourselves.
We went to the Meijiawu Tea Farm to pick Longjing tea. We were warmly received by a farmer who has been working in the tea fields for 30 years. He explained that time plays a key role in the quality of Longjing tea. The best tea is usually picked and roasted before the Qingming Festival, while the second-best tea is produced between Qingming and Guyu. After Guyu, the quality drops sharply, and the tea-picking season usually ends in May. The top-grade Longjing tea can sell for up to 8,000 yuan per 500 grams.
After trying our hand at picking tea, we quickly understood why the price could be so high. Tea picking is far more tiring than it looks. After two hours of picking, the twelve of us together hadn’t even filled one basket. Yet a pair of experienced hands can pick only 600 grams of fresh leaves a day. These leaves are then dried into just 130 grams of Longjing tea.
After we put down our baskets, the farmer treated us to some top-grade Longjing tea. It tasted smooth, with a light sweetness. The flavor (味道) remained on my tongue for a long time, almost like magic. It was the perfect ending to a day that left both our hands and hearts full.
24. What can we learn about the writer’s travel style?
A. She likes to travel with friends.
B. She values real local experiences.
C. She avoids chatting with strangers.
25. When is the best time to pick top-quality Longjing tea?
A. Before the Qingming festival.
B. Between Qingming and Guyu.
C. After Guyu until May.
26. Why is top-grade Longjing tea so expensive?
A. Its flavor is truly magical.
B. It needs very skilled tea pickers.
C. The picking process is really hard work.
27. What does “hands and hearts full” mean for the writer?
A. They carried many tea leaves.
B. They experienced both effort and joy.
C. They successfully picked much tea.
B 25. A 26. C 27. B
第一段作者说:“I love chatting with locals and asking for their recommendations. It’s a great way to gain the best local experiences.”,说明她重视真实的当地体验。
第二段农夫说:“The best tea is usually picked and roasted before the Qingming Festival”,说明清明前是采摘顶级龙井茶的最佳时间。
第三段描述了采茶的辛苦:“Tea picking is far more tiring than it looks...two hours of picking...hadn’t even filled one basket.”,说明顶级龙井茶昂贵是因为采摘过程非常辛苦。
第三段描述了采茶的辛苦:“After two hours of picking, the twelve of us together hadn’t even filled one basket.”,说明采茶非常累人;第四段描述品尝到顶级龙井茶后的感受:“It tasted smooth, with a light sweetness...It was the perfect ending to a day”,说明内心充满满足和快乐。
C
One day last month, Antony Aumann, a college professor in the US, was grading essays (论文). While he was reading the “best paper in the class,” a red “warning” flag suddenly went up. Later, Aumann asked the student whether he had written the essay himself. The student shook his head. He admitted to using ChatGPT, a chatbot (聊天机器人) that can answer questions as well as write emails, poems and essays.
Since AI lab OpenAI introduced ChatGPT in November 2022, it has enjoyed huge popularity. Students are using it to do their homework for them. All over the world, professors like Aumann are redesigning their courses. Some have decided to include more oral exams and handwritten papers. Gone are tasks like “write five pages on this or that.” Instead, professors are designing questions that they hope will be too clever for chatbots. Some are asking students to write about their own lives.
Many schools, however, are unwilling to ban the use of ChatGPT altogether. They are, instead, treating it the way they treat calculators (计算器). In the first place, they don’t believe a ban would be effective. Students will find ways to use ChatGPT if they want to. Moreover, ChatGPT is unlikely to be the last technological development of their kind. Rather than stay away from them, students and teachers should learn to make use of them. The University at Buffalo in New York, for example, has included a discussion of AI tools in its courses. The school is using it to teach students about being honest. It is also helping them to understand both the strengths and the weaknesses of chatbots.
Some students have started learning how to work with AI tools. Lizzie Shackney is a student at the University of Pennsylvania. She uses ChatGPT to quickly produce a large number of possibly useful ideas for her papers. She then thinks over these ideas and decides what to add in her papers and what to leave out. She always writes her papers herself. “With AI tools, I won’t have to spin (空转) my wheels,” she said. “But I’m also not going to depend on them to do everything for me.”
28. Professors have tried to stop students from using ChatGPT by asking them to ________.
A. write about their own lives.
B. write five pages on a certain topic.
C. write about the weaknesses of AI tools.
29. What is the attitude of the University at Buffalo towards AI tools?
A. Against. B. Supportive. C. Afraid.
30. What has Lizzie Shackney been using ChatGPT to do?
A. Write her papers for her.
B. Help her decide what to include in her papers.
C. Produce some possibly useful ideas for her papers.
31. The article is mainly about ________.
A. how students and teachers are dealing with AI tools
B. why using AI tools can probably be harmful to students
C. how students can understand the importance of being honest
A 29. B 30. C 31. A

第三段“Rather than stay away from them, students and teachers should learn to make use of them. The University at Buffalo in New York, for example, has included a discussion of AI tools in its courses. The school is using it to teach students about being honest. It is also helping them to understand both the strengths and the weaknesses of chatbots.”,学校不禁止AI工具进入校园,而是引导合理使用,态度是支持的。
第四段“Lizzie Shackney is a student at the University of Pennsylvania. She uses ChatGPT to quickly produce a large number of possibly useful ideas for her papers.”,她用ChatGPT为自己的论文快速生成大量可能有用的想法。
D
Scientists have discovered the world’s largest field of sea grass. They did it using videos that had been taken by some unusual helpers: tiger sharks.
Sea grasses usually grow in shallow waters near coastlines. They grow in thick fields, known as meadows (草场). These sea grass meadows help to clean the ocean’s water, and provide food and shelter (居所) for many sea creatures. They are also a big help in the fight against climate change. That’s because they store huge amounts of carbon (碳). Carbon is making global warming worse. If these sea grass meadows are damaged, they will send this pollution back into the air.
Though they’re very important, scientists don’t have a good idea of the size and number of the world’s sea grass meadows. Trying to find these meadows from above the sea waters can be quite difficult. The world’s oceans are so large in size that it’s impossible to make a complete study of them by diving (潜水). So some scientists decided to have tiger sharks help with the research. These animals were chosen as research assistants because they spend lots of their time in and around sea grass meadows.
Researchers fixed cameras to the fins of seven tiger sharks. The sharks then carried the cameras and traveled for miles over the sea floor. The cameras were designed to fall off after a few hours and then float (浮) back up to the surface. The scientists find the cameras and collect the videos the sharks had taken.
The scientists learned that the waters around the Bahamas are home to the largest sea grass meadow ever discovered. The researchers say the meadow could be as large as 92,000 square kilometers. The discovery means that the world has about 40% more sea grass meadows than scientists had thought.
The project shows a powerful new way to explore the ocean. In other words, underwater animals can help us to learn more about life under the sea. Animals like tiger sharks are going to take us to new places that we didn’t even know.
32. What’s the value of sea grass meadows?
A. They release carbon and pollute the ocean.
B. They provide food for sea creatures and store much carbon.
C. They produce drinking water for humans and reduce pollution.
33. Why did scientists choose tiger sharks?
A. They often stay near sea grass meadows.
B. They can swim faster than any other fish.
C. They eat grass and know where to find it.
34. What does the discovery around the Bahamas mean?
A. All sea grass meadows are over 90,000 square kilometers.
B. The world has more sea grass meadows than scientists expected.
C. It’s impossible to count sea grass meadows in other oceans.
35. Which sentence best describes the project’s meaning?
A. It proves sharks are the smartest underwater animals.
B. It helps people understand why sharks need protection.
C. It shows underwater animals can help humans do research.
B 33. A 34. B 35. C
根据文章第二段“These sea grass meadows help to clean the ocean’s water, and provide food and shelter for many sea creatures. They are also a big help in the fight against climate change. That’s because they store huge amounts of carbon.”
文章第三段提到“These animals were chosen as research assistants because they spend lots of their time in and around sea grass meadows.”,因此科学家选择虎鲨的原因是它们经常待在海草场附近。
文章第五段指出“The discovery means that the world has about 40% more sea grass meadows than scientists had thought.”,因此可知,世界上的海草场比科学家预期的更多。
文章最后一段总结“The project shows a powerful new way to explore the ocean. In other words, underwater animals can help us to learn more about life under the sea.”,因此该项目的意义在于展示了水下动物能协助人类开展研究。

____39____ If it doesn’t work, remind yourself that you have many talents. You don’t need to focus on
only one hobby.
Care about your friends.
If you want to have deep friendships, you have to take care of them. In her book The Art of Showing Up, Rachel Wilkerson Miller shares two tips on strengthening friendships: (1) Take notes. Your notes will help you remember your conversations with your friends. They will offer you topics to talk about later. (2) Remember the names of other people in your friends’ lives. You may ask to see pictures of the people they are talking about. ____40____
A. Havrilesky says that this truly works.
B. You may start with your favorite hobby.
C. She suggests starting with popular games.
D. Do you find it hard to make new friends?
E. They will help you better remember these people in the future.
F. She points out we should believe others also need friends.
D 37. F 38. A 39. B 40. E
上文“Making friends, however, is as simple as it is difficult.”以及空后“Here is some experts’ advice.”,空处是引出问题的过渡句,D选项“Do you find it hard to make new friends?”
下文“‘Many people think that everybody already has his or her friends,’ she says. ‘This is a wrong idea. Nobody already has enough friends.’”,空处是Heather提出的核心观点,F选项“She points out we should believe others also need friends.”
上文“many of them will tell you to try picking up a hobby.”以及空后“You will meet people with the same hobbies.”,说明建议是有效果的,A选项“Havrilesky says that this truly works”可以引出下文内容,符合语境。
后文“If it doesn’t work, remind yourself that you have many talents. You don’t need to focus on only one hobby.”,空处先说明爱好法得到专家认可,再转折说明万一没用的应对方案,B选项“You may start with your favorite hobby”是第二个方案。
上文“Remember the names of other people in your friends’ lives. You may ask to see pictures of the people they are talking about.”,看看他们谈论对象的照片,是为了记住这些人,E选项“They will help you better remember these people in the future.”
Living with a host family is a ____41____ experience. Although being away from my family for a long time can be challenging, it allows me to see things in a different way.
I grew up near the Pacific Ocean. My family loved spending time at the beach, ____42____ I often felt bored when we went there. When I moved to Germany and shared my beach stories with my host family, they were very surprised. They said they would never ____43____ a chance to visit the ocean, which they saw as a magical place they had only seen in movies or read about in books.
Once, we were trying to decide what to do on a Saturday morning. My host dad ____44____ visiting a nearby castle (城堡). The kids complained and said, “Oh no, not another castle!” I was surprised because I had never seen a real castle before. In my country, castles are uncommon, so the idea of visiting one was ____45____ to me.
That Saturday, we went to the castle, and it was amazing. The castle was ancient, with tall stone walls and towers. I ____46____ what life was like there hundreds of years ago. My host family showed me around, and we explored the castle together.
From this experience, I learned that both the ocean and old castles can be fun places to visit—if you have the right ____47____. Living with my host family taught me to ____48____ new experiences and to see the beauty in things I might not have noticed before.
Small changes in our daily life can open our eyes to the world around us. It’s never too late to try something new and ____49____ the beauty in the ordinary. This journey with my host family has ____50____ me a lifelong love for exploring new cultures and places.
41. A. common B. special C. difficult
42. A. but B. so C. or
43. A. give out B. give in C. give up
44. A. suggested B. finished C. stopped
45. A. boring B. exciting C. tiring
46. A. imagined B. forgot C. doubted
47. A. plan B. task C. attitude
48. A. refuse B. value C. avoid
49. A. admire B. hide C. share
50. A. lent B. sold C. taught
41. B 42. A 43. C 44. A 45. B 46. A 47. C 48. B 49. A 50. C
后文提到“Living with my host family taught me to value new experiences”,体现这段经历很有意义,special“特别的”贴合文意。
前半句“My family loved spending time at the beach”和后半句“I often felt bored”语义相反,but表转折符合逻辑。
下文提到“which they saw as a magical place they had only seen in movies or read about in books”,说明他们十分向往大海,不会放弃机会,give up“放弃”契合语境。give out“分发”,give in“屈服”,和句意搭配不通顺。
后文孩子们回应“Oh no, not another castle!”,能看出是大人提出游玩建议,suggested“提议”后接动名词visiting符合语法和语境。
上文提到“I was surprised because I had never seen a real castle before”,作者从未见过真城堡,内心充满期待,exciting“令人兴奋的”贴合心情。
上文提到“The castle was ancient, with tall stone walls and towers”,古老的城堡容易让人产生遐想,imagined“想象”符合场景。
下文提到“see the beauty in things I might not have noticed before”,体现学会珍视新鲜体验、发现美好,value“珍惜、重视”符合语境。
上文提到“open our eyes to the world around us”,寓意发现并欣赏身边美好,admire“欣赏”适配搭配。
整段讲述寄宿生活带来人生启发,结合后文“me a lifelong love for exploring new cultures and places”,taught“教会、使领悟”契合经历育人的文意。
Do you get lots of reading homework? You might wish that you could ____51____ (read) faster than before. Some people say that you can learn to read at super-high speeds. But experts ____52____ (agree).
“Speed-reading is not actually possible,” said Elizabeth Schotter, a scientist at the University of South Florida, US. Schotter pointed out that people who teach others how to speed-read are usually doing it to make money by ____53____ (sell) courses and books.
In fact, the speed-reading program ____54____ (introduce) first to the public in 1959 by US educator Evelyn Wood. Several US presidents have even asked their staff to take speed-reading courses. ____55____, there is no real science behind speed-reading.
Schotter explained that reading isn’t an easy task. It has four steps: seeing a word, retrieving (检索) its meaning from your memory, connecting it with other words in ____56____ same sentence and then moving on to the next word. It uses many parts of the brain at ____57____ (one) time. It can’t be sped up.
However, skimming is possible. It means people read a passage quickly and only look for ____58____ (importance) words or sentences. Skimmers can get the main idea of a passage, especially if they’re familiar with the topic. But they will not be able to recall all of the details.
So, is there a way to become a faster reader? Research suggests that you should try to improve your vocabulary and ____59____ (simple) read more. The more you read, the better your reading skills will become, and you’ll find it ____60____ (easy) to finish your reading homework in less time.
51. read
52. disagree
53. selling
54. was introduced
55. However
56. the 57. one
58. important
59. simply 60. easier
根据“It uses many parts of the brain… It can’t be sped up.”,可知此处要表达“同时”;短语at one time意为“曾经、同时”。
固定结构“find it+形容词to do sth.”
With the development of education, most students are having a better school life. It’s even believed that in the future, more and more students will enjoy their school days more fully. Here are five tips for a better school life.
1. Get to class on time!
Sure, it’s tempting (诱人的) to sleep in and be late. But teachers say you should always get to class on time. In the past, students had to walk a long way to school. They were always on time because they had no choice. Think about it: Do you have the same sense of responsibility as they did in the past?
2. Study hard!
It’s important to study subjects that interest you, such as maths and science. Playing video games is not helpful for your studies. You should only do it once in a while. Spending too much time on the wrong activities will harm your grades.
3. ________
When we were young, we played with our neighbors. Teenagers do not need as many friends as when they were children, but it’s important to have a few good friends. At weekends, you’ve got more time, so use it not just for fun, but for making friends too.
4. Don’t be nervous. Be confident!
Many people believe that confidence is important for our success. Sometimes it is not easy to be a teenager because of the challenges of school, tests, or relationships. If you’re worried about something, talk to your parents or your teacher.
5. Say no to cheating!
Yes, you knew I was going to say this! It’s so important. Cheating is not smart. It is harmful. It harms your character and your future. Think about how your teachers and friends will feel, and think about what it will do to your reputation (名誉).
61. Why were the students in the past always on time?
________________________________________________________
62. Why should you only play video games once in a while?
________________________________________________________
63. Complete the sentence in the blank with proper words.
________________________________________________________
64. According to Tip 4, if you are worried about something, what should you do?
________________________________________________________
65. What does the underlined word “It” in the last paragraph refer to (指代)?
________________________________________________________
61. Because they had no choice.
62. Because it is not helpful for our studies./Because spending too much time on the wrong activities will harm our grades./Because it is not helpful for our studies and it will harm our grades.
63. Make friends!
64. We should talk to our teachers or our parents.
65. Cheating.

根据文章第三段(第二条建议部分):“Playing video games is not helpful for your studies. You should only do it once in a while. Spending too much time on the wrong activities will harm your grades.”
根据文章第五段(第四条建议部分):“If you’re worried about something, talk to your parents or your teacher.”,直接给出了应对方法。
根据文章最后一段:“Cheating is not smart. It is harmful.”,前一句提到了“Cheating(作弊)”,后一句用“It”指代前文的“Cheating”,说明作弊是有害的。

Dear Peter,
I’d like to recommend a Chinese movie called “Ne Zha: Demon Child Conquers the Sea” to you.
The movie tells the story of Ne Zha, a boy who tries his best to fight against difficulties and protect his family and friends all the time. I recommend it because it has beautiful scenes and lots of funny moments. It also perfectly shows traditional Chinese culture with amazing modern technology.
A
More than three months have passed since Australia banned social media (社交媒体) for under-16s.
B
