A big sandstorm hit China in early April in 2023. It covered many places in thick clouds of yellow dust (尘土), including Qinghai, Heilongjiang and Beijing. The dust even travelled to Shanghai and Jiangsu.
Dust can travel very far. Every year, there is a cloud of dust moving from the Sahara Desert to the west. It can fly 1,500 to 6,000 meters into the sky and travel thousands of kilometers.
This year’s wind in China came from the Gobi Desert and was very strong there. The temperatures this spring were higher than before. There was also little rain. So the land was dry and it was easier for sand and dust to go into the sky. China has been working for many years to fight against sandstorms. In the 1970s, China started the Three-North Shelter Forest Program and they have already planted more than 300,000 square kilometers of trees.
When the sandstorm comes, it’s better for us to stay in a room with doors and windows closed. If you are outside, don’t ride bikes and wear gloves, masks and goggles to protect yourselves. Also, don’t get close to trees. If you cough a lot, you should go to hospital.

Wilderness survival (野外生存) skills were commonly used in the past, but in modern society, they are uncommon. In modern times, we're doing more brain work and less physical labour (劳动). This change in lifestyle is clear in our bodies. According to recent research by Cambridge University, man farmers 7,300 years ago had legs as strong as the best Olympic players. But 3,000 years later, their legs were never that strong. People living in ancient times were also very tall. However, people living today can never compare with them in this.
Teachers at a school in New Zealand think this might be a problem. What if climate change or natural disasters (灾难) cause us to live like ancient people? Students in the Deep Green Bush School go outdoors and learn how to fish, hunt, cook over an open fire and learn about plants and animals.
Teachers and students at the school believe that if you can survive in the wilderness, you can survive anywhere. But are these wilderness survival skills really needed? After all, most of us live in a modern world.
The reason why most of us don't learn ancient survival skills is that we don't need them anymore. "In a modern society, there are a lot of skills to be developed to succeed, and perhaps only some of those can be developed outside," said David Berg at the University of Otago in New Zealand. Modern life requires us to learn other things, such as how to find a job, drive a car or speak a foreign language.
Time and the development of society decide what survival skills people need to learn. However, one can never have too many skills. So why not learn some wilderness survival skills? At the very least, you will learn more about nature and yourself.

Santorini is a small city near the sea. It is also a beautiful city full of cultural charm (魅力). Let's look around the city together.
There is a music festival in the park. People around the world come to enjoy this festival. Some come alone. They are dancing to the music when musicians are playing guitars, drums, and pianos. Some come with their family. They are sitting on the grass, eating snacks and drinking juice. And some people are holding their phones. They are not making phone calls but taking photos to share.
In the central town (镇), many people are visiting a big fair (交易会). The fair offers a good way for sellers to sell their things, so sellers from all over the city come to sell their things here. For example, farmers are selling fresh fruit, vegetables, and flowers. Many things here are on sale, so buyers can spend less money buying the same nice things.
At school, people from different countries are showing their own countries' cultures. Some are drawing pictures. Some are making crafts (手工品). Some are telling old stories about their countries. And others are making special food of their own countries.
On the beach, teams are playing in an international volleyball match. Players from many countries come here to join the match. Two teams are playing. They are very tired, but they are trying their best. They don't want to lose. Many people come to watch the match and cheer (加油) for the players.

If someone asks you what a disaster is, you can answer right away. But what about a secondary disaster? You may not be so sure. Don't worry. Let's learn about it.
A secondary disaster is a quiet and sudden disaster that happens after the first one. It's caused by the first one. Let's look at a real example. In 2019 and 2020, there was a serious drought in Australia. The land became very dry, and the plants could catch fire easily. Soon, large forest fires broke out. These fires burned millions of hectares of land. Many animals had no place to live, and the sky was filled with smoke. The drought was the first disaster and the forest fires were the secondary disaster.
So, how can we avoid secondary disasters? For earthquakes, the main goal is to avoid fires. Gas pipes often break when the ground shakes, so we must turn off gas and electricity as soon as the ground stops shaking. For floods, the risk is often disease (疾病). Do not drink floodwater or eat food that has touched it. They aren't clean enough. As for typhoons, the danger often comes from trees and power lines, especially when they are falling. They may hurt you seriously. And power lines can give you an electric shock.
In short, secondary disasters are dangers after the first one. If we stay careful and take the right steps, we can keep ourselves safe.
Secondary Disaster
— the one Coming 1 and 1 after the First
Example:
· There was a serious drought in Australia in 2019 and 2020.
· The plants on the 2 could burn easily.
· Large forest fires broke out.
· Many animals lost their homes, and the sky was filled with smoke.
Prevention:
· For earthquakes:
· Turn off gas and electricity 3 the shaking.
· For floods:
· Be careful with 4 water and food.
· For typhoons:
· Don't get close to the 5 trees or power lines.

You must know about the earthquake in 2008 in Sichuan. Natural disasters can happen anywhere at any time in the world. Are you ready if one happens in your neighbourhood? Find out what you need to do now.
During an earthquake, don't leave the building during the shaking, because falling things from the building may hurt you.
When an earthquake hits, remember the rule “Drop, Cover, and Hold On”. “Drop” means getting down to your hands and knees. “Cover” your head and neck. Hide under a strong table, like a kitchen table. If there's no table, stay by a bed or a large sofa to protect yourself. “Hold On” to your shelter (遮蔽物) until the shaking stops.
Don't use the stairs (楼梯). Even if the stairs don't look broken during the earthquake, nobody can say they're not broken inside and won't fall down.
Try to find a place without high buildings or houses if you are already outside.
If you are driving when an earthquake suddenly happens, don't just stay in the car. Heavy things may fall and hit your car.
