It doesn’t need much water, but it likes a lot of sun. The best insects for a garden are bees. Some plants need bees’ help to produce fruit. Last year we didn’t have any bees because they were sick. If bees are sick, they won’t leave their homes. But this spring, they are back. There are lots of birds in my garden. They jump around on the grass. They are so lively that I can’t take photos of them easily, so I have to sit quietly for a long time. Visit my blog next week for more information.

Cooperation has got attention in many schools, possibly because good teamwork spirit is of great importance to successful groups. It is believed that doing team sports is the best way to teach cooperation. In the team environment, members need to communicate with each other, which can prepare students for both schoolwork and future jobs. It can also encourage students to follow team rules. C
Last summer, my son, Eric, left for university in another country. Our once lively house became quiet and lonely. I missed and worried about him so much that I started sending him messages on the phone, mainly to say hello or to give him a word of warning.
One of my messages said, “So you told me you lost your wallet. If you are always careless, one day you’ll wake up and find yourself lost.”
I did get Eric’s messages, but most of them were about money. I was a bit angry. They were not different from the notes he used to leave on the whiteboard when he was at home.
“I bought a new pair of shoes. They cost me $90. Please help!”
“Money is running short because I’ve bought some books for my research paper. Help me, please!”
Recently, however, Eric begins to send me all kinds of articles. Some are funny, some are touching and some make me think. He knows I haven’t got many things to do in my free time. He says they will help me understand young men better and keep up with the times. I read the articles slowly, like a careful student, with mixed feelings as well—my kid, who followed me around not long ago, has now become my teacher!
So I write back, “I’ve read all those articles. I’ll take them as a loving son’s hopes towards his mother. He must be thinking that his mother is still young enough to accept new things. That makes me feel proud. We parents can’t learn quickly and change in both body and mind. Thank you, my son.”
In this way we share ideas, with a gentle and beautiful language we seldom use. Every time I read those messages, I feel warm.
28. Why did the writer keep sending messages to Eric?
A. To ask Eric to return home soon.
B. Because Eric needed her advice every day.
C. Because she felt lonely and worried about him.
29. What did the son often write about in the past according to the underlined sentence?
A. Money. B. The hobby. C. The future.
30. Why does Eric send his mother all kinds of articles?
① To ask his mother for some more money.
② To give his mother some things to do.
③ To help his mother keep up with the times.
④ To help his mother understand the young better.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①②④
31. How does the writer’s feeling change?
A. Proud→angry→worried.
B. Proud→worried→angry.
C. Worried→angry→proud.
C 29. A 30. B 31. C
第一段“Last summer, my son, Eric, left for university in another country. Our once lively house became quiet and lonely. I missed and worried about him so much that I started sending him messages on the phone”,明确提到儿子去国外上大学后家里冷清,作者因想念和担心儿子,所以不断发信息。
第三段“I did get Eric’s messages, but most of them were about money. I was a bit angry. They were not different from the notes he used to leave on the whiteboard when he was at home”以及后文儿子发的“I bought a new pair of shoes. They cost me $90. Please help!”
第六段“He knows I haven’t got many things to do in my free time. He says they will help me understand young men better and keep up with the times”,说明埃里克发各类文章是为了给母亲找事做,让母亲跟上时代,更好地了解年轻人,并非为了向母亲要更多钱。

Three years ago my husband and I started the “Farm Camp” program. We wanted city kids to experience what we enjoyed and learned on our family farm. We host one or two families at a time. Most of them come for a week. Every morning, I take the kids through a two-hour hands-on farm class. Here, I try to teach them some lessons.
There is a lot to learn. For example, I don’t expect a child to know how long it takes for a chick to hatch (孵化). But I’m often surprised when they don’t know how to climb over a gate or a tree. In the years when I was a kid, these skills were common knowledge. City kids today hardly get to touch real tools or take on difficult chores. These experiences can be unpleasant, so it’s understandable that parents want to shield their children from them. The problem is that kids may not learn valuable (宝贵的) lessons about resilience (适应力) and independence.
The same is when it comes to a more serious topic. In the beginning, I didn’t talk about death with young visitors since I didn’t want to make them sad. But my own kids once faced death of their beloved farm animals and got over it, so I believed that the “Farm Camp” kids can do the same. Now, I explain openly that little piggies become bacon (熏猪肉), saying death is a natural part of life—a lesson even young kids can understand.
At first I was worried the chores would make my young visitors bored but much to my surprise, they find the chores fun. When they come for return visits, as so many do, they all ask me, “When do we get to feed chickens and pigs?”
32. What does the underlined word “shield” in Paragraph 2 mean in Chinese?
33. According to the passage, the writer ________ today’s parenting style.
A. disagrees with B. strongly hates C. is pleased with
34. We can learn from the passage that ________.
A. farm chores are boring for city kids
B. traditional skills are valuable
C. few kids visited the farm again
35. What would be the best title for this passage?
A. Lessons on My Farm
B. The Joy of Farm Chores
C. City Kids’ Farm Journey
C 33. A 34. B 35. A
第二段提到“These experiences can be unpleasant, so it’s understandable that parents want to shield their children from them”,意思是这些经历可能不愉快,所以父母想要shield孩子远离这些经历是可以理解的,结合语境可知这里“shield”是“保护”的意思。
第二段提到“City kids today hardly get to touch real tools or take on difficult chores. These experiences can be unpleasant, so it’s understandable that parents want to shield their children from them. The problem is that kids may not learn valuable (宝贵的) lessons about resilience (适应力) and independence”,作者指出城市孩子几乎接触不到真正的工具和承担困难的家务,父母保护孩子远离这些虽可理解,但问题是孩子可能学不到关于适应力和独立性的宝贵课程,由此可知作者不赞同如今的育儿方式。
第二段提到“In the years when I was a kid, these skills were common knowledge. City kids today hardly get to touch real tools or take on difficult chores. The problem is that kids may not learn valuable (宝贵的) lessons about resilience (适应力) and independence”,作者将自己小时候的情况和现在城市孩子对比,强调传统技能对孩子的价值,说明传统技能是宝贵的。

Cooperation has got attention in many schools, possibly because good teamwork spirit is of great importance to successful groups. It is believed that doing team sports is the best way to teach cooperation. Let everyone help make decisions about the project. Decide the team goal and divide the project into steps. Celebrate every win as a win for the whole team.
▲Build trust and respect
It’s okay to do something wrong, but bravely say sorry to make the situation better. This helps build trust in your team. Respect others’ work and encourage everyone to do better.

34. We can learn from the passage that ________.

C. few kids visited the farm again
35. What would be the best title for this passage?
