Zhou Lei is a researcher at the Hubei Academy of Agricultural (农业的) Sciences.He won the China Youth May Fourth Medal.He also has made great progress in the improvement of rice over the years.So far he has bred (培育) 16 new kinds of rice,increasing grain production by more than 1.5 billion kilograms.This makes sure China has enough grain to feed its people.
Zhou has been offered chances to go abroad and exchange experience with others.One of the visits to the United States made Zhou realize that even though China was playing a leading role in rice research in the world,its agricultural industry was still behind other developed countries.After returning to China,Zhou began using his skills to help the country in agriculture.Instead of staying in an air-conditioned office,Zhou spent most of his time in the field.Breeding is hard,as it is heavily affected by sunlight and temperature.So Zhou always took care of his crops 24 hours a day.
Things don’t always run smoothly.In August,southern China experienced very high temperatures.This had a serious influence on the crops in Zhou’s field.However,Zhou never got downhearted.Zhou believed it opened a window for him to do further study.He said,“Sometimes we just need to find ways to overcome high temperatures,and this also helps us choose the rice.”
After going through tens of thousands of tries,Zhou and his team succeeded in creating new kinds of rice to meet the needs of people.

Yang Zhenning,a world-famous physicist and Nobel Prize winner,died in Beijing on October 18,2025.He was a professor (教授) at Tsinghua University.Tsinghua University
issued a statement about his passing and described him as “immortal (不朽的)” for his achievements in science and education.
Born in 1922 in Hefei,Anhui Province,Yang moved to Beijing with his family in 1929.He went to college at the age of 16.In 1945,he went to the United States for further study,receiving a degree from the University of Chicago in 1948.
In 1957,he won the Nobel Prize in Physics with his partner,because their discovery of how subatomic particles (粒子) behave changed scientists’ understanding of particle physics.From 1949 to 1966,Yang worked in the US,and then taught at the State University of New York until 1999.He returned to China often,working as a visiting professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1986 onwards.
He cared deeply for his country,developing science education.His first visit to China in 1971 encouraged many Chinese scientists to return to China.He also raised money to support Chinese students studying abroad.With his help,China’s science and technology have made great progress.

Jiang Shumei learned her first Chinese character (汉字) at 60.Now,she is a writer of six books.“I never imagined that I could publish a book one day,” says Jiang.
Born in 1937,Jiang left her home in Shandong at a young age and went to Northeast China,where she spent most of her life making a living in a factory.She learned her first character after her husband died in a car accident in 1996,when her daughter Zhang Ailing suggested that she should learn to read to take her mind off the loneliness and sadness.
