My home is in Edmonton, near a river in the mountains. It is a beautiful area that has been made into a park with meters of hiking paths (小路) along the river.
One day, I discovered a wild path I had never seen before. It was really slippery because it was covered with ice. I was alone at the time and even though I was afraid, I still wanted to go for a walk. Just this thought made my heart beat faster. I was shaking, not from the cold, even though it was about—15°C outside, but from fear. I knew I had to do it.
I moved forward slowly and put one foot on the path, then the other. Then I continued, one foot in front of the other. I went very slowly down the path, shaking with every step. I was sweating (流汗) even though I felt cold. I had no idea how long it would take me to travel along the path, but I didn’t care. I just wanted to overcome my fear.
At last, I succeeded! At least that’s how I felt. I nearly ran down the path. Well, not exactly ran, but it felt like that compared with my very slow speed in the beginning.
Maybe you don’t think this is much of a story, but I just want to tell you that we never know what’s around the corner. If you compare this story to life, you’ll see that we have no idea where life is going to take us, or how many easy or difficult paths there are to choose from, until we make a choice! The point is: we have the right to choose!

The Magic of Reading
Reading is one of the most important skills a person can have. It is not only a way to gain knowledge but also a key to open the door to the world of wisdom. Reading can help us understand different cultures, learn new things, and even change our way of thinking.
In today’s fast-paced world, many people are too busy to read. They prefer to watch TV or scroll through their phones instead of picking up a book. However, reading is still an essential part of a healthy and meaningful life. It can reduce stress, improve our concentration, and enhance our communication skills.
There are many types of reading materials available, such as novels, newspapers, magazines, and academic books. Each type offers different benefits. Novels can make us feel empathy and understand human emotions. Newspapers keep us informed about current events. Magazines cover a wide range of topics, from fashion to science. Academic books help us deepen our understanding of specific subjects.
Reading regularly can also have a positive impact on our academic performance. Students who read frequently tend to have better vocabulary, writing skills, and critical thinking abilities. Moreover, reading can inspire creativity and imagination, which are crucial for personal growth.
To develop a reading habit, it is important to choose books that interest us. We can start with simple stories and gradually move on to more complex works. It is also helpful to set a reading goal, such as reading one book a month. With time and effort, reading will become a delightful part of our daily lives.

Nowadays, it seems that everyone, especially teenagers, is connected through social media like WeChat, Douyin, and Weibo. While these platforms help us keep in touch with friends and see the world, many are starting to ask: are we really benefiting, or is it doing more harm than good?
On the one hand, supporters argue that social media is a powerful tool for learning and connection. It allows young people to access news instantly, join online study groups, and learn new skills from tutorials. It also helps shy students make friends online more easily, reducing loneliness. For example, during the pandemic, it was the only way for many to stay connected with classmates.
On the other hand, critics point out serious problems. The biggest worry is its effect on mental health. Seeing the perfect lives others post can make teens feel anxious and unhappy with their own. Comparing themselves to others online often leads to low self-esteem. Moreover, the “like” and “comment” features can become addictive. Teens may spend hours waiting for others’ approval instead of talking to family or playing outside. This can harm their real-life relationships and physical health. A recent survey showed that teens who spend over 5 hours a day on social media are 50% more likely to report feeling unhappy.
In conclusion, social media itself is not good or bad—it’s how we use it that matters. It is like a knife, useful in the kitchen but dangerous if used wrongly. The key is to find a balance. We should encourage young people to use it for creativity and learning, not just for endless scrolling. Parents and schools need to teach digital literacy: how to use these tools wisely, how to tell real information from fake, and most importantly, when to turn off the phone and enjoy the real world.
56.According to Paragraph 2, which is NOT mentioned as an advantage of social media?
A.Getting news quickly. B.Helping shy students make friends.
C.Learning skills from online videos. D.Improving family relationships.
57.What does the word “addictive” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.Easy to get useful information from.
B.Easy to spend too much time on and hard to stop.
C.Easy to make new friends through.
D.Easy to learn new skills from.
58.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.The benefits of online study groups. B.The problems caused by social media.
C.The popularity of different platforms. D.The way to improve mental health.
59.Which of the following would the author probably agree with?
A.Teenagers should never use social media.
B.The advantages of social media outweigh the disadvantages.
C.Learning to use social media wisely and moderately is important.
D.Social media is the main cause of all teenage problems.
60.What is the best title for the passage?

Angie Scarth Johnson is a talented rock climber from Australia, who has made many achievements in the field of climbing. Here, we talked to her to learn about how she had gotten to this point in her life.
Q: What led you to climbing?
A: Like many kids, I was always climbing trees when I was young. At the age of three, I thought anything that looked climbable needed to be climbed. I started to have accidents that sometimes led to me making hospital visits. Then when I was seven, my mom finally found the way to my strange climbing hobby—a climbing gym. And it changed my life.
Q: You were only nine when you climbed a grade (攀岩难度等级) 31. What did you make of that?
A: It was an unforgettable moment. It’s hard to explain how significant (意义重大的) achieving a grade 31 at nine is. Achieving a grade 31 at nine is very difficult. It needs a lot of physical strength that most kids don’t have. I saw it as a challenge and felt everything was achievable and possible.
Q: Why do you love climbing?
A: I tried many sports but I never got the feeling of freedom that climbing could give to me. I controlled my mind and felt my body move. When I finally reached the top, I felt free and excellent!
Q: What advice do you have for new climbers?
A: Set a big goal and just go for it. Don’t hold back. Believe in yourself. Nothing is impossible. And this mindset (思维模式) can be in your life.

46.Why did the writer sweat when taking the path?
A.He felt very afraid. B.He shook to keep warm.

B.The path was not far from the river.
C.The writer had walked the path before.
D.The writer knew where life was leading him.
50.What does the writer mainly tell us through his experience?
A.Rome was not built in a day.
B.Things may not seem so dangerous in the end.
C.It’s worth challenging our fears and pushing on.

I was shaking, not from the cold, even though it was about —15°C outside, but from fear.”以及第三段“I went very slowly down the path, shaking with every step”,可以看出作者是带着恐惧沿着小路前行的。

A.The History of Social Media
B.Social Media: A Double-Edged Sword for Teens
C.How to Make Friends Online
D.Say No to All Social Media Platforms
【答案】56.D 57.B 58.B 59.C 60.B
【导语】本文主要讨论了社交媒体的利弊,指出它既有帮助学习和社交的好处,也有影响心理健康的风险,并强调关键在于明智、适度地使用。
56.第二段提到“It allows young people to access news instantly, join online study groups, and learn new skills from tutorials. It also helps shy students make friends online more easily, reducing loneliness.”,说明社交媒体的优点包括快速获取新闻、帮助害羞的学生交朋友、从在线教程中学习新技能,但并未提及改善家庭关系。
57.第三段提到“Moreover, the ‘like’ and ‘comment’ features can become addictive. Teens may spend hours waiting for others’ approval instead of talking to family or playing outside.”,说明青少年可能会花数小时等待他人的认可,而不是与家人交谈或在外面玩耍,因此“addictive”在这里最可能的意思是“容易花费过多时间且很难停止”。
58.第三段开头提到“On the other hand, critics point out serious problems.”,接着列举了社交媒体对心理健康的影响、成瘾性等问题,因此第三段主要讲的是社交媒体带来的问题。
59.作者在最后一段指出“social media itself is not good or bad—it’s how we use it that matters”和“The key is to find a balance”,说明作者认为明智、适度地使用社交媒体很重要。
60.文章主要讨论了社交媒体对青少年的双重影响,既有优点也有缺点,因此最佳标题应该是“Social Media: A Double-Edged Sword for Teens”(社交媒体:青少年的双刃剑)。

D.We do not have the right to do whatever we like.

B.Social Media: A Double-Edged Sword for Teens

Sometimes, when walking on the road and seeing bricks or stones on the side 62 the road, he would pick them up and put them in a basket to take them home. Over time, a mass of bricks 63 in our yard. 1 felt that the small courtyard was 64 with no room for playing.
Until one day my father started to use these things to 65 a square room in a comer of the yard. Then my father drove the pigs and sheep into the small house, and the yard was clean.
At that time, I just thought my father was great, and he built a house by 66 . Because my family was so poor that it was almost a problem to eat, but my father did not give up, and 67 one day he had enough bricks to build the house in his heart.
In the following days, the spirit has been inspiring me. When I do something. I usually ask myself two 68 : One is what the goal of doing this thing is and 69 other is how much effort is needed to make this thing happen. After that, I must be 70 enough, because I can’t pick up enough bricks in a day.
