They look simple, but they have a fascinating history. It all started in the 1500s, when people in England discovered graphite, a special dark thing. At first, they tied it with thin rope or put it into small wooden sticks to use it better. Then, in the 17th century, the modern pencil began to be made. Skilled workers shaped graphite and placed it into wood. A big change happened in 1795. Conte, an engineer, tried many ways to make better pencils. He mixed graphite with soft earth and fired it. The new mixture was great — changing the amount of earth made softer or harder pencils. Conte put it into wood for easier use. This method is still widely used for most wooden pencils today. Now China makes a large number of pencils, and people all over the world use them. China is a big help in making pencils available for everyone. (Two students are talking about the activities this weekend.) If so, you might feel a bit unsure about using AI chatbots (聊天机器人) after learning how they work. Every time you ask an AI chatbot a question, the data centers (数据中心) behind it use electricity to “think” and reply. In the process, they also give off heat. Keeping those powerful computers cool requires plenty of fresh water. Asking AI one or two, or even a thousand questions, won’t harm the Earth much. But consider what would happen if billions of people used AI at the same time. These small environmental costs would quickly add up. So, you can be more thoughtful about when and how you use it. For simple tasks, such as checking a store’s opening hours, a traditional web search is usually the better choice as it uses about ten times less energy than asking AI. If you have a trickier question, then it’s worth turning to an AI chatbot. In some cases, using AI may even be better for the environment than doing the task yourself. For example, an AI model can create a picture in about a minute. Drawing the same picture yourself might take an hour on your computer. During that time, you and your computer would use at least as much energy as other devices (设备). However, AI models use more energy for every extra word they process. For this reason, you can save energy by asking AI for short answers when long ones aren’t necessary. Also, keep your questions short and to the point. There’s no need to add “please” or “thank you.” The AI model won’t care about it. 44. Why do AI data centers need large amounts of fresh water? A. To clean the data. B. To produce electricity. C. To keep the computers cool. 45. What does the underlined word “trickier” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Clearer. B. More difficult. C. More common. 46. What can we know from Paragraph 4? A. Drawing pictures by hand uses no energy at all. B. AI is more creative than human beings in some way. C. Sometimes using AI is greener than doing things ourselves. 47. How can we save energy when using AI chatbots? A. Use polite words. B. Keep questions short. C. Ask AI for long answers. 48. What is the main idea of the passage? A. How AI chatbots influence environment. B. How AI chatbots can be used environmentally. C. How AI chatbots help people deal with problems. 44. C 45. B 46. C 47. B 48. You normally trust people and other people’s new ideas often have an influence on you. ____50____ But this often leads you to keep your true opinions to yourself. If you sleep on your stomach, you are a rather secretive person. ____51____ You often find comfort in your own ways and never want to change your own ideas. You worry a lot and you’re always becoming sad, but you think your life is quite satisfying. You usually pay more attention to the life of today rather than tomorrow. If you sleep in a curled-up (蜷缩的) side-sleeping position, you are probably a very nervous person. ____52____ You have a low opinion of yourself and often protect yourself from being hurt, so you are very defensive You’re shy and you don’t like meeting others. ____53____ You know your strengths and weaknesses. You’re usually careful. You have a confident personality. D“However, your secret personality shows the real you.”(然而,你的隐藏人格展现了真实的你)起到了承上启下的作用,既承接了前文对“两种人格”的介绍,又引出了后文对“睡姿反映真实人格”的说明,逻辑衔接自然。 B“And you often try to avoid hurting others.”(而且你经常努力避免伤害他人)补充说明了仰睡者的性格特点,与前文的“开放、易受影响”和后文的“隐藏真实想法”逻辑连贯,解释了为什么这类人会隐藏观点。 E“Lying face down is like turning away from the world.”(趴着睡就像在背对世界)形象地解释了趴睡者“内敛”的性格,与前文的“secretive person”相呼应,为后文的描述做了铺垫。 A“You make yourself small, like a ball.”(你把自己缩成一团,像个球)呼应了前文的“curled-up side-sleeping position”,形象地描述了睡姿,同时也体现了这类人“自我保护”的性格特点。 F“If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a balanced personality.”(如果你侧睡,你通常拥有平衡的人格)作为段落开头,引出了后文对侧睡者“自信、谨慎、平衡”性格的描述,逻辑清晰。 Headphones are useful. Many students use them at school. But headphones can also be bad for us. If the volume (音量) is too high, they can cause hearing loss. Measuring Sound Sounds are measured in units called decibels (分贝). Eighty-five decibels and above can hurt hearing. Listening devices can go higher than 100 decibels. To protect your ears, keep your device at about half volume. How your ear works Your ear has many parts that turn sound into something your brain can understand: Step 1. The outer ear collects sound. Step 2. Sound goes into the ear and makes your eardrum shake. Step 3. The shaking reaches the inner part of your ear. Step 4. Tiny hairs (毛细胞) inside move and send messages to your brain. Your brain turns these signals into sound, so you can hear. How hearing works There are tiny hair cells inside our ears that help us hear. We can’t see sound, but it travels in waves. These waves make the hair cells move back and forth, just like leaves blowing in the wind. Loud noise can hurt these cells. Once hurt, these cells never grow back. Protect your ears One sign of hearing loss is tinnitus (耳鸣). This can also make you nervous and stressed. So you should protect your ears in these ways: ● Keep the headphone volume low: You should still hear sounds around you, and others shouldn’t hear your music. ● Don’t listen for too long. About an hour a day is safe. 54. What volume level is considered safe for headphones? ________________________________________ 55. Which part of the ear can collect sounds? ________________________________________ 56. Why can loud volume from headphones cause hearing loss? ________________________________________ 57. How do people feel when they have tinnitus? ________________________________________ 58. Do you often use headphones? How will you protect your ears? ________________________________________ 【答案】54. About half volume. 55. The outer ear. 56. Because loud noise can hurt the tiny hair cells inside our ears. Once these cells are hurt, they never grow back. 57. They feel nervous and stressed. 58. Yes, I do. I will keep the headphone volume low./ No, I don’t. I will try to use the headphone less and take a break after listening for a while. 【54题详解】 原文提到“To protect your ears, keep your device at about half volume.”,因此安全的音量水平是大约一半的音量,直接提取答案即可。 【55题详解】 原文“How your ear works”部分提到“The outer ear collects sound.”,因此收集声音的部分是外耳,直接提取答案即可。 【56题详解】 原文提到“Loud noise can hurt these cells. Once hurt, these cells never grow back.”,因此耳机音量太大会损伤毛细胞,且这些细胞无法再生,从而导致听力下降,直接提取答案,用“Because”开头表示原因即可。 【57题详解】 原文提到“One sign of hearing loss is tinnitus. This can also make you nervous and stressed.”,因此有耳鸣时会感到紧张和压力大。 The Old Man and the Sea is a classic short novel by US writer Ernest Hemingway. If so, you might feel a bit unsure about using AI chatbots (聊天机器人) after learning how they work.
