Trees are close friends in our daily lives. Although they cannot speak, we can still connect with them by hugging and watching them.
Tree hugging is quite easy: step outside, find a park, pick a tree that catches your eye, open your arms, give it a warm hug and quietly feel the connection. Many people say tree hugging helps them feel relaxed and happy.
Does “tree hugging” really have such magical effects? The answer is yes! Some research shows that spending time each day hugging a tree can reduce stress and lift your mood. It can even change your brain chemistry to make you feel happier. Tree hugging helps raise the level of oxytocin (催产素) in the body. Oxytocin is a hormone closely connected with feelings like happiness, calmness and trust.
Besides hugging, watching trees can also be fun and good for your mind. Han Mingzhe, a nature educator, enjoys leading teenagers to explore the wonders of trees. “Although watching trees is a simple activity, there’s actually quite a lot you can do,” said Han. You can study a tree by looking at the bark’s texture and color. You can search for tiny holes on the trunk that allow the tree to “breathe”. You can watch the shape, edges, and veins of the leaves, and even touch and smell them. If the tree has flowers, you can check their shape, color and smell to help find out what kind of tree it is.
You can also connect with a tree’s life story. “You can feel time passing by placing your hand on the trunk with your eyes closed, or sense the flow of energy within by pressing your ear against the bark,” said Han.
29. According to the passage, how can tree hugging help us?
A. By cheering us up. B. By learning history.
C. By improving eyesight. D. By making us taller.
30. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The mood. B. Tree hugging. C. The brain. D. The research.
31. Why does the writer mention Han Mingzhe’s words in the last paragraph?
A. To prove that tree hugging is a popular activity.
B. To show how we can connect deeply with a tree.
C. To explain why trees can communicate with humans.
D. To introduce that Han Mingzhe is a famous educator.
【答案】29. A 30. B 31. B

When you build a house, you use a blueprint. What’s a blueprint? In general, a blueprint is a drawing that shows how to put a house together with many different parts. DNA is the blueprint of life.
But building a living thing is far more complex (复杂的) than building a house. It takes millions of years for nature to change the DNA in living things to make them fit the world they live in.
How tall are you? What colour are your eyes? What size are your feet? All these things are strongly influenced by your DNA before you are born!
DNA is fantastic!
● Except for some twins, every living thing has its own DNA.
● Some health problems can be caused by problems in your DNA. Scientists can look for these problems and, sometimes, help you before you become sick. In the future, scientists might be able to change your DNA.
● There are copies of your DNA in every part of your body. For example, your finger has the same DNA as your hair.
● You have your own DNA, but it repeats patterns from your parents’ DNA. From your DNA, scientists can identify not only you, but also people who are related to you. Your parents and grandparents are related to you, and you have their DNA. When you have a grandson or granddaughter, he or she will have your DNA. Your DNA comes from your parents.
Your DNA has billions of instructions that explain why you are the way you are. It’s one of the most amazing things on the earth!
32. Why does nature change the DNA in living things?
A. To let them become taller and stronger.
B. To help scientists discover related people.
C. To make them fit their living environment.
D. To create different patterns of parents’ DNA.
33. According to the passage, which of the following is strongly influenced by DNA?
A. Favourite food. B. Hair length. C. Language ability. D. Body height.
34. What can we learn about your DNA from the passage?
A. Your DNA can be obtained from any part of the body.
B. Your DNA in fingers is different from that in hair.
C. Your DNA can be changed easily by scientists today.
D. Your DNA is exactly the same as your parents’ DNA.
35. What does the writer probably think of DNA?
A. It is the most amazing thing on the earth.
B. It is to life what a blueprint is to a house.
C. It is easy to understand the instructions in DNA.
D. It is a part that can make the body more complex.
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. A 35. B

Nobody likes to fail, even though it’s said that failure is the best teacher. However, some studies have shown that failure is not a bad thing.
Being wrong 15 percent of the time is the secret to learning new things, according to researchers at the University of Arizona, US.
In a series of experiments, they taught computers to do simple tasks, such as picking an odd or even number (奇数或偶数). They found that when the error rate (错误率) was 15 percent, the computers learned faster.
At school, teachers think students learn better when they are challenged to understand something outside of their existing knowledge. Making tasks too hard will cause students to give up easily. But if they are too easy, students will not learn anything useful.
However, it’s not clear where the “sweet spot” is. In the experiment, 15 percent was the answer, but the researchers are not sure if it will work at school. They simply hope to help teachers. Students should remember that they don’t have to be frustrated (沮丧的) if they aren’t 100-percent right all the time.
If failure is common, then how do we learn from it and succeed? Another study by Northwestern University, US, can tell us.
You’ve probably heard the saying “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” However, the study found that persistence (坚持) only works if you learn from your failures. “You have to figure out what worked and what did not, and then focus on what needs to be improved,” a researcher said.
The time taken between different tries is also important. The faster you try, the better your chances of future success are. The more time you take between tries, the more likely you are to fail again.
36. According to the passage, what is the most helpful for students’ learning?
A. Tasks requiring no extra effort.
B. Tasks fully understood by students.
C. Tasks far beyond students’ knowledge.
D. Tasks slightly harder than what students know.
37. What does the underlined phrase “sweet spot” mean in Paragraph 5?
A. The proper time of experiments to improve learning.
B. The proper skill for students to avoid making mistakes.
C. The proper place for teachers to carry out teaching work.
D. The proper percentage of mistakes to help students learn better.
38. What does the study by Northwestern University show?
A. Avoiding failures to reach success.
B. Forgetting about failures to gain success.
C. Learning from failures to achieve success.
D. Paying no attention to failures to get success.
39. How can we make the most of the time between two tries to achieve success?
A. By waiting as long as possible.
B. By taking no notice of the time.
C. By trying again as soon as possible.
D. By spending the time doing nothing.
40. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Avoid Failures B. Learn from Your Mistakes
C. The Chance of Future Success D. The importance of the 15% Rule
【答案】36. D 37. D 38. C 39. C 40. B

【37题详解】
文章第五段提到“However, it’s not clear where the “sweet spot” is. In the experiment, 15 percent was the answer…”,结合前文提到的15%错误率能让学习效率更高,可知“sweet spot”指帮助学生更好学习的合适错误率。
【38题详解】
文章倒数第二段提到“However, the study found that persistence only works if you learn from your failures. ‘You have to figure out what worked and what did not, and then focus on what needs to be improved,’ a researcher said.”,说明只有从失败中学习,坚持才会有效。
